Kara

The reflection in the stream isn’t mine anymore. My eyes catch silver-blue at the edges when I blink too fast. My aura pulses with a frequency I don’t understand, especially when I feel too much at once.

This is what I signed up for.

Which, unfortunately, is every time Elijah opens his damn mouth. I had left the cave that morning, walking as fast as I could.

“You’re walking like someone who’s never used legs before,” he calls out, clearly trailing me again.

I whip around. “Elijah.”

He grins at the sound of his name, smug like I’ve rewarded him with a gold coin.

“I told you to stop following me.”

“And yet,” he says, catching up, “you keep walking straight into my route. Maybe you’re the one following me.”

He’s wearing that stupid smile again. Not cocky in a dangerous way, but warm. Boyish and infuriating.

I roll my eyes and turn back. “You’re really an idiot.”

“Possibly. But at least I’m an idiot with snacks.”

I hate that my stomach growls at the exact wrong moment. I

Jaxon’s POV I shut the door behind me and just stood there. I couldn’t move. Couldn’t breathe. She looked at me like I was a stranger. Like I was nothing. My chest felt like it was caving in. I pressed my back against the door, fists clenched at my sides. The hallway felt too quiet, too empty. I could still hear the sound of her voice telling me to leave. Like it had been carved into me. Don’t come near me. I don’t know you. Please leave. I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to block it out, but it didn’t work. It was burned in. Elvira has forgotten me. She didn’t seem to know me atall or was she pretending? I wanted to turn around, go back in there, and make her remember. Make her see me, but I couldn’t. I’d already made it worse by staying as long as I did. I started walking. I didn’t know where I was going, didn't care. My feet moved on their own, fast at first, then slower as the weight of it all hit me. I felt like I was falling apart. Everything we’d fought for, everythi

Elvira’s POV I was running. Faster than I ever had in my life — but it wasn’t enough. My feet pounded the ground, bare and stinging, roots grabbing at my ankles as if the forest itself wanted to slow me down. My breath burned in my chest. The air felt thick, like I was choking on it. I didn’t dare look back. I could hear them, my brothers. Their voices screaming my name. “Elvira!” “Elvira, stop!” I ran harder, legs aching, lungs screaming. But no matter how fast I went, they kept getting closer. I stumbled, falling to my knees. The ground felt wet and cold. My hands sank into it, reaching at the dirt, trying to push myself u, that’s when when I saw them. Two wolves. No, not just wolves. They were massive, taller than any wolf could ever be. Their fur thick and wild, dark as night except for the silver streaks running through it. Their eyes glowed pale, almost white. One of them bared its teeth, lips curling back slow, like it wanted me to see every sharp edge. The other st

Elvira The air was filled with an almost electric stillness, as if the entire woods was holding its breath. Shadows stretched at the clearing where we’d set up for the ritual, ancient stones with faded runes encircling the small fire pit. The cold night seeped into my bones, but it was nothing compared to the chill crawling through my veins. I pulled my cloak tighter around me, heart pounding not from the cold but from the weight of what I was about to do. Severing the cursed mate bond between Jaxon and me. The ritual wasn’t just painful; it could kill me. Jaxon’s eyes burned with desperate fear as he reached for my hand, fingers trembling. “Elvira, please. Don’t do this. The bond… it’s part of us. We can find another way. Please.” I shook my head, my voice low but steady. “No, Jaxon. It’s the only way. If I don’t break this curse, I’ll lose myself, and I won’t be able to protect you. I have to do this.” His grip tightened, knuckles white. “There has to be another way.” “Ther

Kara The nightmare didn’t just wake me. It shattered me. I jolted upright in the cold tent, heart hammering like a beast desperate to escape my chest. My skin prickled with a fire I couldn’t douse, silver roots crawling beneath my flesh like they wanted to strangle me from the inside out. The fae queen’s cruel laughter echoed in my ears, a cold, mocking sound that burrowed into my bones. “You belong to me.” I swallowed hard, trying to claw back the sinking dread. But the weight of it pressed down, relentlessly. The tent walls felt too close, stifling. I needed air. Anything to escape the echo of that voice. I slipped out of the tent. The night air bit at my skin, sharp and cold, filling my lungs with cold clarity. The stars scattered, distant and cold as the queen’s laughter. My legs carried me without thought, pulling me toward the small fire Elijah had left burning. It wasn’t much — just a circle of stones with embers glowing low and red, sparks flickering upward. He was sit

Elijah I don’t believe in fate. Or destiny. But something about Kara pulls me in like gravity. It’s not just her fire, the fierce edge to her voice or how her eyes flash silver-blue in the sunlight. It’s what she hides beneath it all. I see it in the small things. I want to ask her about a lot of things. But I’m scared. Not of her. Of what she might say. We’d been walking for hours, through the brittle remains of the forest, past the rocky outcrops where the wind screamed like a lost ghost, the darkest part of this woods. Kara never stopped moving, her eyes sharp and wary. I’d never seen anyone move with such guarded grace. Like a wild animal who’s survived too many traps. We paused at the edge of a cliff, the sun bleeding gold over the valley below. I looked at her. She was sitting on a jagged rock, knees drawn up, fingers clasped tightly around them. Where is she even heading to? I don’t know but I followed her anyway. Her eyes caught the sunlight and flickered with that str
