Derek’s grin stayed carved into his face as the coach blew the whistle.

“Alright!” the coach barked. “Pairs up. We’re starting with contact drills. I want to see speed, balance, and most importantly, I want to see control.”

Control. Of course.

The players moved quickly, slapping hands, calling out positions. I stayed where I was, eyes locked on Derek. He rolled his shoulders like he was warming up for a show, not a tryout. When he caught me staring, his grin sharpened.

For one brief second, I couldn’t speak, then I shook my head.“No.”“Ethan—”“No.”“I can do this.”“I said no, Bri.”“But I can fix it!”“And I said you’re not doing it!”My voice rang through the clearing.Bri flinched, but she didn’t retreat. “It’s my fault,” she insisted. “I made the choice that hurt you. I hurt Derek. I helped destroy something you both spent years building, and now you’re standing here with nothing because of me. Let me make it right. Please, Ethan.”I stared at her, struggling to keep my temper under control. “Do you hear yourself?”“Yes.”“No, you don’t.” I stepped closer. “You’re standing here telling me you’re going to die to fix a mistake we both made. You think that’s going to make everything better? You think I’m going to watch you sacrifice yourself and then go back to living happily ever after with Derek?”“If it means you get another chance—”“Stop!”She fell silent.I dragged a hand through my hair and looked away, trying to gather the pieces of mysel

I remained where I was long after Derek disappeared from my sight, thinking about all I could’ve done differently until I heard my name.“Ethan?”I didn’t respond.“Ethan?”Someone tapped my shoulder.I blinked, and the world slowly returned to me. I turned my head and found Bri standing beside me, staring at my face with concern.“Sorry,” I muttered, rubbing a hand over my face. “I didn’t realize you were there.”“I’ve been standing here for a while.” She tilted her head. “Are you okay?”I almost laughed. What kind of question was that? Was I okay? The man I had loved for years had just walked out of my life, and I had watched him go because I had destroyed the one thing that might have given him a reason to stay, but I couldn’t bring myself to say any of that.Instead, I looked at her and asked, “How are you feeling?”Bri stared at me as though she hadn’t expected me to ask.“I’m fine,” she answered after a moment. “A little exhausted, but I’ll recover.” Her expression softened. “I’

My breath caught. “No.”“Ethan—”“No, don't say that.”“I need you to listen to me.”“Then tell me what I can do!” I pleaded. “Tell me what you need from me, and I'll do it. Anything. Just don't leave me like this.”He closed his eyes briefly, and when he opened them again, I could see the tears he was trying so hard to hold back.“Do you know what I kept thinking about while we were fighting?”I shook my head.“I kept thinking about you and Bri.”My chest tightened. “Derek…”“Every time I looked at you, every time I heard you call my name, every time I thought about what would happen if we survived that battle, I remembered that you slept with her.”He swallowed hard.“I was trying to fight for your pack. I was trying to keep everyone alive. I was trying to focus on the people who needed us, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get that image out of my head.” He gave a bitter, humorless laugh. “Even when your life was in danger, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I hated myself

When we finally pulled apart, Lucas cleared his throat and wiped his face with the back of his hand. He looked uncomfortable, as though he regretted allowing me to see that side of him. But before either of us could say anything, I heard footsteps approaching as my half-brothers walked into the room. The eldest folded his arms across his chest and frowned, his gaze fixed somewhere over my shoulder. He seemed determined not to look at me, and the stubbornness in his expression reminded me of myself when I was younger.I couldn't blame him for being guarded, as whatever Lucas had told them about me over the years, they had grown up believing it.Lucas glanced at the boys, then turned toward me. “There's something I should do,” he said.I looked at him.He placed a hand on the youngest one's shoulder and gestured toward the eldest. “Boys, come here.”The youngest immediately moved closer. The eldest hesitated before reluctantly stepping forward, although he kept his arms folded.Lucas si

My breath caught. “Mom. Oh, Mom”She stared at me as though she couldn't quite believe I was there, then she took a small step forward while I crossed the room in an instant and wrapped my arms around her. She hugged me back, holding me tightly against her.“Oh, my boy,” she whispered.I buried my face against her shoulder. For so long, I had imagined coming home and finding her safe. I'd imagined hearing her voice, feeling her arms around me, and knowing that I hadn't returned too late. Now it was happening. She was alive, and the war was over.“I thought I was going to lose you,” I admitted, my voice breaking. My mother tightened her arms around me. “You came back and finished what you said you would.”“I promised I would, Mum. I had to.”She pulled away just enough to look at my face. Her eyes were wet, and her hands moved over my cheeks as if she needed to reassure herself that I was real.“You're here,” she whispered. “You're really here.”I nodded, unable to find the words to an
