That stopped him cold and for a moment, he just stared at me, then his expression softened in a way I hadn’t seen before.

“Ethan…” he said quietly.

“I’m not doing this because I think it’s the better plan,” I continued. “I’m doing it because you don’t want me to do something that’ll make things worse. And I won’t do that to you.”

He swallowed, his gaze dropping briefly before lifting again.

“Thank you,” he said.

I shrugged slightly. “Don’t thank me yet. I still think it’s a bad idea.”
