Chapter 4

Author: Stars
For three days straight, I was like a walking corpse. I didn't eat. I didn't drink.

The death of my child had taken my soul with it.

Ethan didn't call once. The only sign he existed was Sophie's constant stream of social media posts — their cozy meals, their matching outfits, their weekend getaways.

Each post was a blade between my ribs.

On the third day, the door to my room opened. Ethan walked in.

Looking at the man who had killed my child, I wanted to lunge at him and tear his throat out. But I didn't even have the strength to lift my arm.

He didn't say a word. He just pulled a bank card from his pocket and held it out to me.

I looked at it, cold. "What's this supposed to mean?"

He stood over me, looking down. "There's three million on it. Part of it covers whatever you spent on Sophie's tuition over the years. Don't hold it over her head anymore — she's sensitive, and her pride can't take it."

He paused, then continued. "The rest is compensation. For you."

"Sophie's pregnant. I'm the father. I can't just abandon her. But I promise — once the baby is born, I'll cut things off with her for good."

"I know I've wronged you. But the child is innocent. So please — until she delivers, don't do anything to hurt her or the baby."

The word "baby" hit me like a knife through the chest.

I had just lost my baby. Did he have any idea what that did to a mother?

And now my own mate was standing here asking me to show kindness to the other woman. To protect her child. While mine was gone.

What about my baby? My baby hadn't even had a chance to be born — and it was dead.

I didn't take the card. Ethan read it as defiance.

His face hardened. "Vivian, I'm trying to be reasonable here. Don't make this difficult. Sophie has already forgiven you for what you did to her baby. What more do you want?"

"Are you trying to push her to the edge? Is that what you want?"

My face was chalk-white. I had no color left, no strength left. I moved my cracked lips and forced out a single sentence. "Fine. You can go."

I couldn't stand the sight of him for one more second.

Something in my expression must have unsettled him, because his tone softened. "Vivian, what's wrong with you?"

But before I could answer, his phone rang. I heard a woman's voice sobbing on the other end. Ethan's face shifted to panic in an instant.

He glanced at me on the bed, warred with himself for all of two seconds, then spoke into the phone. "I know. I'm on my way."

He hung up and gave me an awkward look. "Get some rest. Sophie's not feeling well — I need to go check on her. I'll be back soon."

Then he walked out the door without looking back.

The room was empty again. Just me.

But I didn't feel sad. If anything, I felt a strange kind of peace.

In that moment, I knew — I was done. The love was dead.

Ethan never came back. Not that day. Not the next.

I checked myself out of the hospital, took a cab back to the house — the place I used to call home.

I pushed open the door. Every inch of it was filled with traces of the life Ethan and I had built together. In the corner sat the wedding dress I'd had made for the Mating Ceremony. Once, it had been my greatest hope. Now it was nothing but a joke.

I packed a single suitcase with only my own things. I booked the next flight out.

Before I left, I sat down and wrote a letter. No anger. No accusations. Just four words:

"The Mating Ceremony is off."

I placed it on the kitchen counter, slipped off the ring he'd given me, set it on top of the letter, and walked out the door.

The cold night air hit my face. For the first time in weeks, I could breathe.

At the airport, I shut down the mind-link and turned off my phone — severing every connection to him.

The plane took off. Below me, the lights of the pack territory shrank to nothing.

Goodbye, the pack I'd called home for twenty-eight years.

Goodbye, Ethan.

After I left the pack, I found work as a healer at a small clinic. The days were long, but they were full — and they were mine.I thought I'd never see Ethan Blackwell again. Then one evening after my shift, there he was.A few months had changed him. He'd lost so much weight that his cheekbones jutted out. He looked nothing like the confident, powerful wolf he used to be.I froze for just a second. The moment he saw me, tears streamed down his face and his voice broke."Vivian, I've been looking for you everywhere..."I looked at him the way you'd look at a stranger.I ignored him and tried to walk past, but he blocked my path."Move." My voice was ice."Vivian, I know I was wrong. Just give me one last chance."He grabbed my hand. His tears fell onto the back of it, one by one."Sophie blinded me. After you left, I realized I can't live without you. Come home with me. I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you. I swear I'll never let you suffer again."Even now, he was puttin

The door swung open and Sophie walked in.She'd heard I'd left the pack. She was practically glowing with triumph. She figured that with me gone, Ethan would have no choice but to go through with the ceremony. She'd finally become Luna.Sophie masked her excitement and put on a show of concern. "Ethan, what's wrong?""That bitch leaving is her own loss. Don't let her ruin your health over this.""She may be gone, but you still have me. I'll always be by your side. And our baby — we'll be a real family."She was still dreaming of becoming Luna.Ethan lifted his head. His eyes were bloodshot. Now that he knew what she'd done, the woman standing before him made his skin crawl. He flung her off. His voice was raw. "Get out."He'd never spoken to her like that before. Sophie flinched, but quickly pasted on a sweet smile. "Ethan, you can hit me, yell at me, I don't care — just don't do this to yourself. It hurts me to see you like this."Ethan rose like a man already dead, his eyes terrifyin

Ethan left the hospital and drove like a madman, running red light after red light. He burst into the house, calling my name. "Vivian! Vivian, where are you?"Silence.Every room was the same. Empty closet. Empty drawers. My side of the bathroom, cleared out."Vivian, I know I was wrong. Please — come out. Stop hiding from me.""This isn't funny anymore."No matter how loud he called, the only answer was silence. He collapsed onto the couch, clutching his head in his hands. That's when he noticed it — a small box sitting on the coffee table. He opened it. Inside lay the engagement ring he'd given me, and a charm on a simple cord. The charm. When they'd first gotten together, he'd been nothing — an unwanted bastard son who couldn't even afford to eat. They'd shared a cramped studio apartment. Every night she'd held him and told him it would get better. And when he'd finally clawed his way to Alpha, the first thing he'd done was kneel before the statue of the Moon Goddess for three days

The Mating Ceremony was days away, and Ethan couldn't reach me. Even through the mind-link, there was nothing — just silence. He paced the living room, growing more agitated by the minute. He'd assumed I was just being stubborn. That I'd cool off in a day or two and come crawling back to apologize, the way I always did.But three days of dead silence? That wasn't like me. It was as if I'd vanished from the face of the earth. The unease gnawed at him. That's when Sophie appeared behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist. Her voice was syrupy. "Stop frowning. Do you like my new nightgown?"She was wearing a purple lace negligee, her hands roaming over his chest. But Ethan was in no mood. He peeled her off and pushed her hands away."You seem well enough. I need to go."Sophie's eyes welled up instantly. "I just wanted you to stay with me for a while. Vivian tried to hurt my baby — I'm scared."At the mention of my name, Ethan's frown deepened."Vivian went too far this time. I'm goi

Two days later, Ethan rushed into the hospital with Sophie trailing behind him.The moment he saw me, he hurried over to check on me. Once he saw I was alright, he let out a sigh of relief. He gripped my hand. "I'm so sorry. I've been tied up these past few days. What happened? How did you end up in the hospital?"I pulled my hand free. In my head, I wanted to ask — tied up in bed, were you? But I held it in and just said, "It's nothing."I glanced up at Sophie. The look of resentment on her face lasted only a second before she smoothed it away. And all I could think of was the face I'd seen right before I blacked out.She wanted me dead. She wanted my baby dead.I was about to tell Ethan everything when his phone rang. He gave me an apologetic look. "Sorry — I need to take this. One second."The moment Ethan stepped out of the room, Sophie's mask fell away. She walked to my bedside and let out a cold laugh. "That little bastard in your belly sure has some fight.
