Chapter 1

Back in school, Nathan and Serena were the most popular students on campus. They were both gorgeous and at the top of every class.

Everyone assumed they'd end up together.

So when Nathan publicly announced that he was dating me, everyone pitied Serena.

"What's so great about Kira? She's plain, her family's got no money and no status, and her grades are terrible. What does Nathan even see in her?"

"Exactly. I shared your thought. I always thought Nathan would confess to Serena. They're the ones who are actually meant for each other."

Reading all those hurtful comments, I felt terrible.

Whenever that happened, Nathan would stroke my hair. "Don't let them get to you.

They can say whatever they want but you're the one I chose."

After we started working, Serena’s outstanding abilities help her secured her spot as Nathan's Beta.

No matter how hard I tried, I always fell behind and could only land a low-ranking clerk's position.

Nathan always teased me about how adorably clueless I was.

But then he'd go right back to discuss the pack's annual development plans with Serena.

Listening to them throw around terms I couldn't understand, I suddenly felt exhausted.

Ever since our school days, I’d been chasing after Nathan, believing that if I just tried a little harder, I could get a little closer to him.

But the harder I tried, he was further away from me. It felt as though only someone as exceptional as Serena deserved to stand by his side.

They danced gracefully across the dance floor as the crowd cheered, as if they were the ones who should be mates.

I stood in the quiet corner, watched the two dazzling figures on the dance area, and leave the venue

Everyone had gone to the celebration, so when I got back to the Pack Administration Office, the only person there was a cleaning lady with a limp.

She was surprised to see me and asked, "Weren't you at the banquet with the Alpha? Why are you back so soon?"

I went back to my desk and turned on the computer.

"Yeah, it just hit me that I still had files to organize, so I came back early."

The cleaning lady couldn't help but praised, "You're such a hardworking girl. The Alpha is lucky to have a girlfriend like you."

My fingers froze over the keyboard.

If only he felt the same way.

He was busy with pack affairs every day. I could count the number of dates we'd had that year on one hand.

The pack celebration was one of those rare occasions.

To make sure I wouldn't embarrass him, I took dance lessons a month in advance.

I was clumsy and kept falling, I was black and blue all over.

But whenever I imagined dancing with Nathan at the banquet, I felt motivated to keep going.

Serena's arrival shattered all of my hopes

Before the banquet started, I reminded them again and again not to talk about work.

They both pinched my cheeks and laughed. "Okay, okay, whatever you say."

But at the banquet, he pulled Serena aside to talk with other Alphas about future collaborations, investments, and projects.

When I protested, Nathan acted like I was being unreasonable.

"We're not just here to have fun. There are so many Alphas here, and I need to secure as many partnerships as I can. This is all for the pack's future. Can you stop being so childish?"

That one sentence shut me up completely.

I knew how much responsibilities he carried as the Alpha, so I didn't say another word.

All I could do was drowning my sorrow, one glass after another.

The moment I'd been waiting for finally arrived, but Nathan walked right past me and invited Serena to dance.

After they left, I stood alone in the corner and keep telling myself it was fine.

Serena had been dancing since she was a child and every movement she made was light and graceful. With her as his dance partner, Nathan would look good in front of everyone.

I stayed and organized the meeting materials at my desk and didn't leave the office building until late at night.

The moment I stepped out, I ran right into Nathan, who had just came back from the banquet.

On the day of my mating ceremony, I arrived at the venue in my wedding dress. Before the ceremony started, I was applying my lipstick at the vanity when a familiar voice made my hand pause."We once promised to be each other's bridesmaids at our mating ceremonies. Does that promise still count?"I turned around. Serena stood in the doorway wearing a bridesmaid dress, her head down, unable to look at me.I would never forgive her for what she'd done to me, but there was no denying that she had been my closest friend back in school. If she hadn't stood up for me when I was being bullied, I might not have made it to graduation. She drew a deep breath and walked slowly toward me. Through the mirror, I watched as she gently took the lipstick from my hand and carefully applied it to my lips.It felt like we had been transported back to school, when she'd done my makeup before graduation.Neither of us said a word. We both knew this was the last peaceful moment we'd ever share. After a long s

I worked at the hospital for a year. That was the same year I met my current boyfriend, Derek. He was an attending physician at the hospital and the senior doctor who mentored me when I first started. He wasn't powerful or influential like Nathan, but he was good to me and gave me the sense of security I needed. We soon set a date for our mating ceremony.I thought my life would just go on quietly from there, but on an otherwise ordinary afternoon, I ran into the last person I ever wanted to see. That day, I was consulting patients as usual. When I called the next one in, they didn't come through the door.I glanced up toward the doorway and found Nathan standing there, frozen, staring at me in disbelief."Kira?"I hadn't expected to see him here either. After a brief moment of surprise, I composed myself. "Sir, what symptoms are you experiencing?"He rushed forward and grabbed my arm, his eyes bloodshot. "Kira, it's me. It's Nathan, your boyfriend. Don't you remember me?"His grip hur

"She's not coming back."The smile on Nathan's face froze. "What did you say?"Serena shot him a sidelong glance, a faint smirk tugging at her lips. "Haven't you noticed? She already resigned and left the pack. She's not coming back."Nathan stood there in shock. Before he could process what she'd said, his assistant called. "Alpha, Kira's resignation and pack withdrawal have both been fully processed. Should we keep her desk?"Nathan erupted. "When did I authorize her to leave the pack? I only suspended her. When did I ever approve..."He stopped mid-sentence, as if something had just hit him. He stared at Serena in disbelief. "You did this?"Serena didn't say a word, but the look on her face told him everything.Nathan rose to his feet and advanced on her, step by step. "You signed Kira's resignation. And that anonymous letter. You wrote it too, didn't you? Why would you do that? Wasn't Kira your best friend?!"He was on the verge of losing control, grabbing Serena by the collar and

I returned to the pack where I'd grown up.The moment I stepped off the plane, I saw my parents waiting for me at the airport. Before my mother could say anything, tears were already streaming down her face. She pulled me into a tight hug and cried, "My baby girl, you've suffered so much."The tough front I'd been putting up all this time crumbled the moment I saw her tears.I buried my face in her chest and cried out all the pain I'd been holding in for years. My father gently ruffled my hair. "You're home now. That's all that matters."Knowing I was coming home, they had prepared a feast for me.Watching my family together, happy and at ease, it hit me that the happiness I'd spent my whole life searching for had been here all along.Over dinner, my mother asked about my plans for the future.I thought for a moment. "I want to teach myself medicine and become a great doctor."Becoming a doctor had always been my dream, but I had buried it and the person I used to be for Nathan's sake.

In the days that followed, Nathan didn't come looking for me, as if he had truly accepted the breakup. With less than a week left before my last day at work, I heard plenty of gossip about him.Nathan visited the hospital every day to take care of Serena. After Serena was discharged, Nathan had her moved into his home to look after her.Stories like that kept pouring in, one after another. But none of it mattered to me anymore. In three days, I would be leaving this pack for good. The day before I left, Nathan suddenly called me to his office. He tossed an anonymous report down in front of me, accusing me of selling the pack secrets to another pack.Nathan's brow furrowed deeply as he looked at me as though I were a criminal on trial. "There isn't enough evidence to prove you’re guilty, but this incident has already affect the pack. I'm suspending you until the investigation is complete. Once it over, I'll decide whether you can have your job back."I looked at the anonymous letter and

I went home and booked my flight out of the pack's territory. That night I had a dream, or rather, it wasn't a dream. It was a memory from our school days.Back then, I was introverted and people bullied me constantly. Serena had stood up for me more than once, chasing the bullies away. She would carefully bandage my wounds, clearly angry on my behalf. "You're way too nice. Next time they mess with you, come find me. I'll deal with them."Back then, we were best friends who told each other everything. How did we end up here?I was jolted awake by my phone ringing. The moment I picked up, Nathan's furious voice blasted through. "If you have even a shred of conscience at all, get to the hospital and check on Serena now. She was attacked by rogues while looking for you."My stomach dropped, and I rushed to the hospital.I pushed open the door to her hospital room. Serena was lying in bed, her eyes red.I hurriedly approached her bed to check on her, but a tall figure blocked my way.Natha
