Chapter 2

作者: Stars
I didn't cling to him or fuss over him like I usually did, but walked right past him.

Nathan grabbed my wrist before I could walk away.

"What's wrong? Why are you being so cold to your boyfriend?"

I looked up and met his sincere gazes, I felt a sharp pain as if something stabbed deep inside my heart.

Back in school, I'd had a crush on Nathan for three years.

The day we got together, the school forum nearly exploded. Nobody believed Nathan and I would last.

After all, the two of us belonged in different worlds.

He was the Alpha's only son, the rightful heir, and the golden boy everyone envied.

My parents were ordinary folks. I had average looks and average grades, the kind of person who disappeared into a crowd.

I knew someone like me wasn't worthy of someone like him.

But when he approached me, I simply couldn't push him away.

That night, he drove me home. When the car stopped in front of my house, he suddenly spoke up, "Kira, you're my girlfriend. You could be my Luna someday. When are you going to get that temper of yours under control?"

I froze. My hand hovered over the car door handle, and it took me a long moment before I slowly turned to look at him blankly. "What did you say?"

"You disappeared from the banquet without leaving me a message. Do you know how long Serena and I spent looking for you?

"I'm your boyfriend, but more importantly, I'm the Alpha with a pack to run. Serena is my Beta. We already have more than enough to deal with every day. Can you stop making things harder for us?"

He said they'd spent ages looking for me, but I hadn't received a single call or message from the mind-link.

Yet they still branded me as "immature" and "temperamental" on me.

I lowered my head and said flatly, "Okay. I get it."

"Good. Go home. Serena and I still need to go over some management plans."

When I got home, I pulled out a resignation letter and a pack withdrawal application that I'd written long ago from the drawer.

The first time I consider leaving him was the day he started pushing me aside for Serena, but I couldn’t bring myself to give up on a relationship I'd fought so hard to keep.

After a long hesitation, I locked them back in the drawer.

But the disappointments kept piling up, and my love finally turned to ashes.

"Kira, once I become Alpha, you'll come work with me at the Pack Administration."

Because of that promise, I gave up my dream of becoming a doctor and followed him to this distant pack.

But once I started working, I realized things was far more complicated than I thought.

Endless revisions to proposals, business dinners I couldn't get out of, meeting after meeting. To keep up with Nathan, I stayed late at the office every single night.

Since I knew nothing about pack management, I had to work ten, even a hundred times harder than everyone else.

But Nathan never appreciated my effort. He casually tossed the proposal I'd spent an entire week pulling all-nighter to finish onto the desk with a sigh.

"Why can't you be more like Serena? Look at this proposal. Did you ever put any thought into it?"

He frowned, pressed a hand to his forehead. "Forget it. Let Serena handle this. She gives me far less trouble than you are."

He dismissed a week's worth of my effort as worthless.

After that, he never gave me another project. I stayed as the entry-level staff, year after year.

When I went to Nathan's office to submit my resignation and pack withdrawal application, he wasn't there.

Instead, Serena was lounging on the sofa like she owned the place. She glanced at the resignation letter in my hand with contempt.

"If Nathan hadn't pulled strings to hire you, you wouldn't even qualified to work here. Quitting is probably the smartest thing you could do."

She took my papers and signed her name. "Nathan is away for a business trip today, so I'm in charge of all the administration's affairs. The fastest we could process a resignation is one month. You've got plenty of time to pack up your useless junk."

I took the papers back without a flicker of expression. I said a quiet "thank you," and leave.

At the doorway, I heard the sound of a glass shattering.

Serena seethed through gritted teeth, "Why you? I'm smarter, prettier, better than you in every way. So why did Nathan pick you and not me?"

My hand froze on the doorknob. I turned back to see the twisted look on Serena's face and couldn't help saying, "If you want him, then take him. I'll break up with Nathan and leave this pack. You were right. This place was never mine to begin with."

On the day of my mating ceremony, I arrived at the venue in my wedding dress. Before the ceremony started, I was applying my lipstick at the vanity when a familiar voice made my hand pause."We once promised to be each other's bridesmaids at our mating ceremonies. Does that promise still count?"I turned around. Serena stood in the doorway wearing a bridesmaid dress, her head down, unable to look at me.I would never forgive her for what she'd done to me, but there was no denying that she had been my closest friend back in school. If she hadn't stood up for me when I was being bullied, I might not have made it to graduation. She drew a deep breath and walked slowly toward me. Through the mirror, I watched as she gently took the lipstick from my hand and carefully applied it to my lips.It felt like we had been transported back to school, when she'd done my makeup before graduation.Neither of us said a word. We both knew this was the last peaceful moment we'd ever share. After a long s

I worked at the hospital for a year. That was the same year I met my current boyfriend, Derek. He was an attending physician at the hospital and the senior doctor who mentored me when I first started. He wasn't powerful or influential like Nathan, but he was good to me and gave me the sense of security I needed. We soon set a date for our mating ceremony.I thought my life would just go on quietly from there, but on an otherwise ordinary afternoon, I ran into the last person I ever wanted to see. That day, I was consulting patients as usual. When I called the next one in, they didn't come through the door.I glanced up toward the doorway and found Nathan standing there, frozen, staring at me in disbelief."Kira?"I hadn't expected to see him here either. After a brief moment of surprise, I composed myself. "Sir, what symptoms are you experiencing?"He rushed forward and grabbed my arm, his eyes bloodshot. "Kira, it's me. It's Nathan, your boyfriend. Don't you remember me?"His grip hur

"She's not coming back."The smile on Nathan's face froze. "What did you say?"Serena shot him a sidelong glance, a faint smirk tugging at her lips. "Haven't you noticed? She already resigned and left the pack. She's not coming back."Nathan stood there in shock. Before he could process what she'd said, his assistant called. "Alpha, Kira's resignation and pack withdrawal have both been fully processed. Should we keep her desk?"Nathan erupted. "When did I authorize her to leave the pack? I only suspended her. When did I ever approve..."He stopped mid-sentence, as if something had just hit him. He stared at Serena in disbelief. "You did this?"Serena didn't say a word, but the look on her face told him everything.Nathan rose to his feet and advanced on her, step by step. "You signed Kira's resignation. And that anonymous letter. You wrote it too, didn't you? Why would you do that? Wasn't Kira your best friend?!"He was on the verge of losing control, grabbing Serena by the collar and

I returned to the pack where I'd grown up.The moment I stepped off the plane, I saw my parents waiting for me at the airport. Before my mother could say anything, tears were already streaming down her face. She pulled me into a tight hug and cried, "My baby girl, you've suffered so much."The tough front I'd been putting up all this time crumbled the moment I saw her tears.I buried my face in her chest and cried out all the pain I'd been holding in for years. My father gently ruffled my hair. "You're home now. That's all that matters."Knowing I was coming home, they had prepared a feast for me.Watching my family together, happy and at ease, it hit me that the happiness I'd spent my whole life searching for had been here all along.Over dinner, my mother asked about my plans for the future.I thought for a moment. "I want to teach myself medicine and become a great doctor."Becoming a doctor had always been my dream, but I had buried it and the person I used to be for Nathan's sake.

In the days that followed, Nathan didn't come looking for me, as if he had truly accepted the breakup. With less than a week left before my last day at work, I heard plenty of gossip about him.Nathan visited the hospital every day to take care of Serena. After Serena was discharged, Nathan had her moved into his home to look after her.Stories like that kept pouring in, one after another. But none of it mattered to me anymore. In three days, I would be leaving this pack for good. The day before I left, Nathan suddenly called me to his office. He tossed an anonymous report down in front of me, accusing me of selling the pack secrets to another pack.Nathan's brow furrowed deeply as he looked at me as though I were a criminal on trial. "There isn't enough evidence to prove you’re guilty, but this incident has already affect the pack. I'm suspending you until the investigation is complete. Once it over, I'll decide whether you can have your job back."I looked at the anonymous letter and

I went home and booked my flight out of the pack's territory. That night I had a dream, or rather, it wasn't a dream. It was a memory from our school days.Back then, I was introverted and people bullied me constantly. Serena had stood up for me more than once, chasing the bullies away. She would carefully bandage my wounds, clearly angry on my behalf. "You're way too nice. Next time they mess with you, come find me. I'll deal with them."Back then, we were best friends who told each other everything. How did we end up here?I was jolted awake by my phone ringing. The moment I picked up, Nathan's furious voice blasted through. "If you have even a shred of conscience at all, get to the hospital and check on Serena now. She was attacked by rogues while looking for you."My stomach dropped, and I rushed to the hospital.I pushed open the door to her hospital room. Serena was lying in bed, her eyes red.I hurriedly approached her bed to check on her, but a tall figure blocked my way.Natha
