MasukChapter 4
SERAPHINA
A few of the pack members coughed or cleared their throats, and I caught several exchanged glances in the crowd as they heard what I had said.
Elena's smile faltered a bit, but she recovered quickly.
"Well," Marcus said, his tone sounding a bit too cheery when trying to smooth over an awkward moment,
"We were just celebrating Elena's return to town. She's been away for several years, and we wanted to make sure she felt welcome. I didn't want to bother you since you work so hard."
The dismissal in his words was small but it was there. The message was clear: this party was for pack members who mattered to him and were important and I was just the human wife who happened to live here.
"How thoughtful of you," I said, my voice filled with false sweetness as I looked around as well. "And what a lovely surprise to come home to."
Marcus shifted uncomfortably, and I saw Elena looking between us coming to the realization that something was off. Good. Let her sense the tension.
Let her realize that walking into another woman's home and claiming her husband from her wasn't going to be as simple as she'd expected.
"Elena's had a long journey," Marcus continued, his hand touching her lower back in a gesture that was intimate and possessive.
"She's exhausted from the long trip and is suffering from jet lag, and I thought she might be more comfortable spending the night in our room. Just for tonight. You know how it is, we wolves need familiar scents to feel better and recover quickly. Since you're human, I figured the guest room would be fine for tonight."
The room went dead silent. I could hear the tick of the grandfather clock in the hallway, I could hear the humming of the fridge in the next three rooms, the slow beeping of the AC. Marcus had just asked me to sleep in the guest room of my own home so that another woman could take my place in the bed I'd shared with him for five years.
The romantic side of me, yelled at me that this was the moment to make a scene. To throw things around and to demand explanations, to force him to choose between his wife and his lover in front of the entire pack.
But the logical part of me that had survived five years of hiding my true nature, held me back.
"Of course," I said with a smile that felt fake but passable for them. "How considerate of you to think of her comfort."
Marcus blinked, clearly taken aback by my acceptance. Around the room, I could see pack members exchanging glances of surprise and confusion. They clearly had been expecting that I put up a show for them. They had expected drama, tears, the kind of emotional breakdown that would justify Marcus's decision to replace me.
Elena, who was now getting confident by both alcohol and my easy acceptance of the situation, stumbled a bit as she turned to face me.
Whether the stumble was genuine or planned, I couldn't tell, but the result was the same, she fell against my husband kissing his lips for everyone to see before pulling away.
"Oops," she giggled, her hands fisting in the front of his shirt as she looked up at him with love and affection present in her eyes as she said.
"Sorry, I'm just so clumsy when I'm tired."
Several pack members chuckled, and I saw a few of the women exchange knowing looks.
"Oh my," I said, my voice filled with concern as I stepped closer to Elena. "Are you feeling alright? Losing coordination and balance for no reason at all can be a sign of epilepsy. Have you been experiencing any other symptoms? Confusion, memory loss, sudden mood changes?"
Elena's face turned red, and several of the pack members started to snicker amongst themselves. A few of the younger wolves actually laughed outright before being silenced by sharp looks from their elders.
"I'm fine," Elena said quickly, stepping back from Marcus, seeing that her plan hadn't worked and ended up being the one mocked.
"Just tired from traveling."
"Of course," I said, looking very concerned as I tried to keep a passive face. "Well, if you experience any more episodes, you should definitely see a doctor. Brain damage can be quite serious if left untreated."
Marcus's jaw tightened, and I could see the anger that was building in his eyes. But what could he say? That his wife was wrong to be concerned about a guest health symptoms? That she shouldn't use her professional knowledge to help someone who clearly needs it.
"I think it's time for everyone to head home," I said, addressing the room at large. "It's getting late, and I'm sure you all have responsibilities tomorrow. Please make sure to clean up after yourselves before you leave."
The dismissal was polite but firm, and I had the satisfaction of seeing several pack members nod in agreement.
I was, after all, still the Alpha's wife, and this was still my home, regardless of who Marcus planned to pick as his chosen mate.
"Sarah," Marcus said, his voice carrying a warning.
"Yes, darling?" I replied sweetly, meeting his eyes with innocent eyes.
He stared at me for a long moment, clearly trying to figure out what game I was playing. But he wasn't able to pick up anything from my face. And it was clear that the humiliation he planned for me wasn't working as I ended up embarrassing the both of them and shutting down this party without starting a fuss.
"Nothing," he said finally. "We'll talk tomorrow."
"Of course we will," I agreed. "Sleep well, both of you. I'll be in the guest room if you need anything."
As I walked away, I brought out my phone that was in my bag and scrolled through the list of blocked contacts that I had in my list.
Can't believe I was doing this but desperate times call for desperate measures.
Chapter 31KIERANThe problem was that I couldn't defend myself without lying. Yes, Seraphina had come to thank me. But it was also true that seeing her again had stirred up feelings I'd been trying to bury for five years. It was true that my wolf, despite its anger and determination to move on, had still responded to her presence with an intensity that terrified me.And Miranda, perceptive as she was, had probably seen all of that in the brief moment our eyes had met.I thought about her father's threats, about the political implications of this engagement falling apart. But more than that, I thought about Miranda herself—the brilliant, capable woman who'd spent months preparing to be my Luna, who'd been nothing but supportive and understanding despite knowing she was second choice. She deserved better than this. Better than a mate who couldn't let go of the past, better than a king who was still nursing a five-year-old broken heart.*Then give her better,* my wolf said firmly. *We p
Chapter 30KIERAN"Miranda, wait—" I stood up, but she was already moving toward the door."Thank you for your time, Your Majesty," she said formally, as if we were strangers conducting business rather than two people who were supposed to be getting married in a matter of weeks. "I'm sure my father can answer any remaining questions you might have."She was gone before I could stop her, the door closing behind her with a soft click that felt like a death knell.*Go after her,* my wolf urged. *Forget the business meeting. Go after her right now and fix this.*But Mr. Ashworth was still sitting at the conference table, watching me with an expression I couldn't quite read. Going after his daughter in the middle of a business meeting would be unprofessional and would only make the situation more obvious than it already was."My apologies," Mr. Ashworth said, though he didn't sound particularly apologetic. "Miranda has been under a great deal of stress lately. The wedding preparations, the
Chapter 29KIERANSeraphina's eyes widened as she realized what was happening. "Kieran, I—""Please," I said quietly, meeting her gaze directly for the first time since she'd arrived. "Just go. This is already complicated enough."She nodded slowly, wiping at her eyes as she moved toward the door. But before she could leave, Miranda and her father appeared in the doorway, and I watched in slow motion as Miranda's gaze moved from me to Seraphina and back again."Mr. Ashworth," I said, forcing my voice to remain steady and professional. "Thank you for coming. And Miranda, I... I wasn't expecting you.""Clearly," Miranda said, her voice perfectly composed even though I could see the pain flashing in her eyes. "Lady Blackwood. How lovely to see you looking so recovered."The two women stared at each other, and the tension in the room became almost suffocating. Seraphina looked like she wanted to say something, but one glance at Miranda's cold expression seemed to change her mind."I was j
Chapter 28KIERANI didn't have a response to that, because my wolf was probably right.I took a deep breath and pushed open the door to my office, steeling myself for whatever this conversation was going to bring.Seraphina was standing by the window, her back to me as she looked out over the city. She'd changed since I'd last seen her unconscious in that bedroom in Millbrook—she was wearing dark jeans and a soft sweater that made her look younger somehow, more like the girl I'd known before everything went wrong. Her honey-colored hair was pulled back in a simple ponytail, and I could see the tension in her shoulders even from across the room."Seraphina," I said, keeping my voice neutral and professional. I moved to stand behind my desk, using it as a barrier between us. Physical distance felt important right now, a reminder that things had changed, that we weren't what we used to be.She turned to face me, and the sight of her silver-blue eyes nearly knocked the breath from my lun
Chapter 27KIERANI woke up the next morning with my wolf's anger still simmering beneath my skin, a constant reminder of the promises I'd made to myself the night before. Today was supposed to be about making things right with Miranda, about proving to her—and to myself—that my commitment to our future was unshakeable.I checked my phone before I even got out of bed, hoping to see a response to the multiple messages I'd sent her last night. Nothing. The delivered receipts mocked me from the screen, each one a small rejection that made my chest tighten with worry.*She's ignoring us,* my wolf said, its voice still rough with the previous night's fury. *Can you blame her? After the way we let her walk away yesterday?*"No," I admitted, sitting up and running a hand through my hair. "I can't blame her at all."I tried calling again while I made coffee, listening to the phone ring once, twice, three times before going to voicemail. Her voice on the recorded message was professional and d
Chapter 26KIERAN*I'm coming to see you tomorrow. We need to talk face to face, and I need you to know that my commitment to you hasn't wavered. You're the woman I chose to build a future with, and I don't make that kind of choice lightly. Whatever you're thinking, whatever you're feeling about today—give me a chance to make it right. Please.*I hit send before I could second-guess the message, then immediately followed up with another.*I'm not running after Seraphina. I'm here, and I want to be here with you. That's the truth, and I need you to believe it.*The messages showed as delivered but not read. Either she was asleep, or she was deliberately avoiding me. Either way, there was nothing more I could do tonight except keep my promise to myself—and to my wolf—that tomorrow would be different.Tomorrow, I would prove to Miranda that she was my choice. Tomorrow, I would show everyone that Seraphina's return meant nothing to me, that I'd moved on and built a life without her. Tomor
