The room held its breath. All eyes settled on the two beds beside each other. The Luna, purple-veined and still, and the Alpha, bruised, scarred, and unconscious.

“Killian, she won’t survive until nighttime. She doesn’t even look like she’s breathing. Ember gave everything to this pack. She found an unlikely connection and pledged herself to it despite the challenges.” Caden’s voice was thick with grief. He peered pleadingly at Thorne’s loyal guard.

Killian was the closest thing to a beta there was in Thorne Maddox’s pack. Thorne had assigned him to protect Ember with his own life. But now that it came down to it, Killian was picking Thorne’s life over Ember’s. As expected of a loyal guard.

Killian slid his gaze to meet Caden’s. “I sympathize. Luna Ember was a force in her own right for the short time I’ve been in her service. But Thorne will not be risked.”

“What is happening?”

All eyes snapped to Alpha Thorne, who had risen on one elbow, swaying slightly with his eyes half-open, but

  • Alpha’s thirst for Ember    Chapter 120

“Ragnar,” he breathed.Ragnar sat with his back to the cell wall, tossing a pebble in the air and catching it over and over.“Caden?” Raphael asked.Ragnar just pointed to the next cell.Raphael peered into the cage but saw no one. He dragged himself into a sitting position, figuring Caden was tucked in the farthest corner of the cave. The pebble slipped from Ragnar’s fingers and rolled away on the ground.“Why’d he throw you in here with us?” Ragnar asked. “Didn’t you do your mission well?”Raphael’s jaw clenched. “He’s not my father.”“How come?”“He killed my mother after finding out I’m a bastard.”“Damn. Hard luck,” Ragnar said like it was just another piece of bad news.“Caden, you were right,” Raphael called out, scowling toward the next cell. “I used my family name to get to Matteo, so I could get to Kaya. But once I discovered his plan, I came to warn you.”“So I’m just supposed to believe you did that out of the kindness of your heart?” Caden sneered. “You stormed out after

Alpha Riad, his father, gently placed the quill in its holder as he said, “Leave us.”“I’d be damned.” The muscular guard who seemed to be the beta or head of security muttered in a chuckle. He slapped Raphael on the back twice, then walked out with the other guards. The door clicked shut.Raphael glanced around the room. It was the same one that Kaya and Luna Zyrah, Stella, all of them… had used before they left to Thorne’s territory on Ember’s request. All the cots were gone, the room had been redone to his father’s taste, but some old items remained. Like Luna Zyrah’s vanity and the door to her inner room.He slid his gaze back to his father.“Where is Mother?” he asked, his throat felt swollen.“She’s dead.”Spoken with no emotion, like he was telling the time.Raphael was at a loss for words. The pain of losing his mother took root in his heart but his body ached more. His healing was slow because of the wolfsbane’s effect. He stared at his father, blinking through the sting in h

  • Alpha’s thirst for Ember    Chapter 118

The smell of ash and smoke woke him. His eyes peeled open, struggling against the heat blowing directly in his face. With panic, he realized he was still bound, his arms and legs tied so tightly they felt numb, the ropes biting into his swollen skin.“There’s too many of them, and even if we succeed with this rescue, how will we defend against them? They look about ready to march on Thorne’s territory,” Caden said tensely. He recognized the voice as Caden’s. Shifting into a comfortable position, he saw them both crouched behind a dislodged piece of roofing, their eyes scanning the ruins like hawks. They were in Bloodveil. He had been unconscious the whole trip. His mind filled with thoughts, his parents were alive, with an army to defeat the territories. They were preparing for war, and he didn’t even know what to think, they’d left him behind, their only son and heir, like he was disposable. The stickiness held his mouth shut, but he fought against it, and spoke, forcing the words ou

  • Alpha’s thirst for Ember    Chapter 117

Ember stood rooted to the ground in fear.An owl hooted nearby, but she couldn’t see a thing through the thick red fog. She could only see her own hand if she brought it up really close to her face. The ground felt solid, but she had sunk into it three times now, gasping for breath, desperately trying to swim out, only that she didn’t know which way was up. It felt like quicksand, only it wasn’t sandy. It was thick, like foam. Red like blood. It sucked her in, swallowed her whole, and spat her back out. Each time she drowned, and respawned back on the surface, on hard, unmoving ground. It was cold. And the fog stung her nose with an unexplainable smell. Sometimes like the earth after rain. Sometimes like rotting flesh. The cry came again. The cry of a baby. High-pitched, raw, and helpless. She felt drawn to it like a magnet, felt protective of it like a mother. But she hadn’t given birth. Not yet. So whose child was that? The first two times, she had fallen at the first step she took.

The heat seemed to converge in the hallway as they left, leaving the doctor and healer standing outside the bedroom door where Alpha Thorne and Luna Ember lay.Kaya stared off into the horizon, illuminated by the sun. “Do you think they’ll make it?” she asked to no one in particular.“Their bond is strong,” Caden said firmly. “He won’t let her die.”Ragnar turned to his sister.“Stella, I would like to see Mother. What room is she in, what is her condition?”Stella’s face took on a pained expression. “She’s still in Bloodveil. When Ember sent guards to bring us here, she was weak… under pain medication. And I had to leave her.” She swallowed hard. “I spoke to Killian. He says he can only go there or send men on the order of the Alpha or Luna.”“I’ll go get her then,” Ragnar said, already turning like his mind had decided. “It should take less than a day by cart.”“You should take a carriage,” Caden cut in. “I could accompany you to make less time.”Ragnar nodded once, appreciative. “T
