Chapter 2

Author: Simply So
I ignored what Mr. Brown said about not having seen us in ten years and shouldered past the guy Angeline had brought along. I wrapped an arm around her waist like I was showing off.

I said, "Mr. Brown, we didn't just grow up. Angeline's my wife now. Oh, and the usual dishes. No cilantro or spice."

As always, I ordered Angeline's favorite dishes and listed her no-gos for him.

But just as Mr. Brown agreed, Angeline said, "Wait, no. Make them mildly spicy, and add cilantro."

She turned to me, her gaze shifting from puzzled to serious. "Caleb, my tastes changed a long time ago."

My smile froze, but I talked myself down pretty quickly. It was fine. I was missing ten whole years of memories. People's preferences were bound to change over such a long period.

I acted like it was no big deal and handed Angeline a set of cutlery. I said, "That's even better. I can do cilantro and spice. We can finally eat the same things."

Angeline passed the cutlery to the man who hadn't spoken thus far. "Here you go, Shawn."

Shawn. Shawn…

The name made me pause.

I finally understood why he'd looked so familiar the moment I saw him—Shawn Moore was the man Angeline had loved but had never gotten back when we were 20. It turned out not all preferences changed, even after ten years.

Was that why, a decade down the road, I wanted a divorce from Angeline, the woman I'd loved for 15 years? Because Shawn was back in the picture?

A wave of bitterness surged in my chest. My fingers closed around the envelope beside my hand. Inside was that handwritten divorce agreement and a journal.

A voice in my head told me that if I opened that journal, I would find the reason "I" wanted a divorce. But all I did was grip the envelope tighter. I didn't open it.

I loved Angeline. In my head, I was still 20 years old. And back then, I'd loved her so, so much.

At the table, Angeline and Shawn chatted away like nobody else was there. It was as if they'd completely forgotten I existed.

Jealousy burned in my eyes, and I deliberately banged my plate around, making a ton of noise. Angeline still didn't look at me, though.

Maybe the 30-year-old me could've handled this with class—maybe I could've just excused myself and walked out with a smile. But the 20-year-old me didn't know anything about that.

I slammed my cutlery down on the table and yelled, "Angeline, I'm your husband! I'm seriously pissed right now!"

I grabbed the envelope and stormed off. I loved Angeline, sure, but that didn't mean I never got mad.

I sat on a park bench, waiting for her to come to me and apologize. But even after three hours, she didn't show.

I took in the unfamiliar surroundings and the total blank in my head. Somehow, I managed to talk myself down again.

It was fine. I'd long since gotten used to Angeline treating me with this lukewarm indifference. Otherwise, I wouldn't have married her in the first place.

I leaned back and crossed one leg over the other, texting her. "Darling, where's our place again? You know I've forgotten everything."

Her reply popped up almost the second I hit send. It was a pin to a villa, plus one line. "Stop wandering around if your brain's busted. Quit being a pain in the neck."

I pretended I hadn't seen that part, then spammed a few kiss emojis and replied to her with a "Thanks, darling" and several exclamation marks.

When I got to the villa, all I saw was a cold, empty place. There was only one pair of slippers, one toothbrush, and one of every daily essential.

Even on the bed, there was only one pillow.

"I actually stopped liking him a long time ago. I've done a lot of thinking this past month. Once I figured things out, I cut off contact with him. I heard his family went ahead and set him up with an arranged marriage… He's gone, and he's never going to show up in front of you again."Angeline watched me as she spoke, her gaze steady and serious.I frowned. "Why are you telling me all this? It has nothing to do with me."A faint light flickered in her eyes, stubborn and clumsy as she pushed on. "Caleb, I know what we had is over, but I was wondering… I was wondering if you could give me another chance. Let me pursue you this time. Please?"I could hear the tremor buried in her hopeful words, but my expression remained unchanged as I stood there in the sunlight. What came out of my mouth was cold and completely devoid of warmth."Don't bother, Angeline. I think I'm doing fine on my own these days. To me, you're just not that important anymore. Let's just go our separate ways."I

Angeline's smile froze on her face. She blinked, quickly composed herself, and mumbled an agreement.Over the next month, she showed up in front of me every single day in every way she could think of, just like when I used to chase after her.Expensive accessories, concert tickets, the latest luxury items—she threw them at me like money was no object.Back then, I would've been so moved I couldn't see straight. I would've thought Angeline was the person who treated me best in this world. But now, seeing the hopeful look in her eyes, all I felt was calm. Now and then, my heart would give a tiny lurch, but it wasn't for her—it was for the old me. Because right now, she was exactly who I used to be.Eventually, I couldn't help letting out a sigh. "Angeline, stop trying to fix this. We've been together for ten years. We both know exactly what kind of people we are. Stop following me, alright? Just go home."She stared at me, wanting to explain something, but I stopped her. In the end

I would say, "Angeline, you're so pretty."She would turn her back to me and ignore me. When she ignored me, I would just keep going. "Angeline, you're gorgeous."She would press a hand to her forehead and push my face away. "Enough. I get it."Then she would try to hide the tips of her ears, already flushed from embarrassment.Later, in the fourth year of our marriage, I came down with a really serious illness. Angeline, who was pampered and never lifted a finger at home, learned to cook for me.She brought cheesy grits with egg and set it in front of me. I hadn't even tasted it yet when I blurted out, "Anything you make is the best, darling!"She laughed, looking somewhat exasperated. She stuck one hand on her hip and shoveled a big spoonful straight into my mouth. "Not even eating can shut you up."Then I actually tasted the food. The eggs tasted funky, and she'd gone heavy on the salt. It was pretty bad.…Angeline's thoughts snapped back to the present. She lowered her ey

Angeline's hand froze midair. "What did you just say?"She stared at me in disbelief, like she hadn't heard me right."I said, let's get a divorce." I looked straight at her and studied the face I'd loved for more than ten years. In a matter of seconds, a storm of emotions flickered across her face—surprise, embarrassment, anger, and finally unease. At last, she spoke, her voice unsteady. "Caleb, you… you've gotta be joking. Why would you suddenly say something like that?"She clenched her right hand, acutely aware of the rings pressing against her skin. The ornaments on the bands almost dug into her flesh, hurting a little.I said, "I've regained my memories of the past ten years, so there's no need for us to drag this out any longer."Angeline's breathing hitched. "No way. I'm not agreeing to this."Her expression went rigid as she shot me down, trying to strong-arm me into changing my mind. But the version of me standing in front of her now was the 30-year-old me. Her emotio

I had no idea when Angeline and Shawn left, or how long I'd stood there, frozen in place.I sat down at my desk and, by moonlight, finally opened that Pandora's box of a journal."May 21, 2015. I proposed to Angeline, and she agreed! I married her! I want the whole world to know. From today on, I'm done being a pathetic simp!""March 9, 2017. Two years into our marriage, Angeline finally had her first meal at home. She said my cooking was great! All the time I spent learning to cook finally paid off.""August 31, 2018. While I was making dinner today, Angeline actually asked me to add some chili and cilantro. She said that since we're husband and wife, she can't always make me give in to her. She said she had to change for me, too.""May 21, 2019. It's our fourth wedding anniversary! Angeline asked me out to a movie and even prepared an anniversary gift! After the movie, she kissed me under the streetlight.""May 21, 2020. Angeline's been coming home more and more often lately. I

That was why the 30-year-old me had handed the choice to me—the version of me that only remembered being 20—even if it was for the last time.I texted Angeline. "Darling, what happened today was my fault. I'm sorry. Can you come home tomorrow? Please?"…Angeline did come back, but she brought Shawn with her.The confetti I'd prepared for a proposal rained down and circled the two of them, turning me into the punchline all over again.Angeline's face was thunderous. She brushed the streamers off herself with a scowl. "God, Caleb! I must be out of my mind. I knew there was something wrong with your head, and I still agreed to come back!"She turned around, grabbed Shawn's hand, and started to leave. As I watched her walk away without a backward glance, I suddenly thought of something. When I proposed to her ten years ago, had she also walked off looking this cold and fed up, leaving me there like an idiot?I grabbed her hand and stopped her. "No! You can't go!"Her eyes were fu
