Chapter 3

Author: Simply So
This didn't look like a home for a married couple at all. It looked more like a single guy's bachelor pad.

I dug our dust-covered wedding photo out of the basement and hung it back on the wall, then went online and bought a ton of couple-themed decor. I placed them in every corner of the house.

I couldn't wait to see the look on Angeline's face when she came home and saw how different everything was.

But when she finally did come back, she just stopped dead in the doorway and frowned. She said, "Caleb, I don't care if you're really amnesiac or faking it. You're 30 years old now. Can you stop acting like you're still 20? This is so childish!"

She didn't even step inside. She just stormed off, slamming the door shut behind her.

On the console by the entryway, the ceramic doll I'd carefully picked out in the style she liked fell to the floor and shattered into pieces.

I gathered them all and painstakingly glued them back together. The crisscrossing cracks looked like badly stitched-up scars.

I patted its head. "You know Angeline's heart is this cold, little guy. Don't cry, okay? Don't cry…"

Once again, I managed to comfort myself and talk myself down.

Over the next few days, I did everything I could to pop up in front of Angeline whenever I could find an opening.

When it rained, I went to her office to bring her an umbrella, but she just drove off in that five-million-dollar car with Shawn. As they passed me, she didn't even bother rolling down the window. She just splashed me with a wave of dirty water.

When I found out she was going to a golf course, I made a point of getting there early. I even hired a coach beforehand to cram in some golf basics. But the second she saw me, she turned away without a word and headed straight for another course, leaving me standing there like an idiot.

I shrugged it off and kept trying, but she still didn't give me the time of day.

On the sixth day, Angeline finally came home.

I was wired like I'd just downed a gallon of espresso, puttering around the kitchen all morning. By the time I was done, my hands were covered in blisters, but I'd managed to get a few decent-looking dishes on the table.

But all she did was rub at her temples and dump everything straight into the trash.

"Caleb, can you stop doing these things that only move yourself? You're just getting on my nerves."

I honestly didn't mean to cry, but her tone was so full of disgust. She pinned me in place with her dark gaze. It felt like she'd wiped out every bit of effort I'd made and turned it all into a joke in a split second.

I lowered my gaze so she wouldn't see my eyes suddenly going red.

Angeline went quiet for a moment, then suddenly let out a short, mocking laugh. "What's with the devastated act? Haven't you already gotten used to this after so many years?"

Some things were just self-deprecating when I said them about myself. But once they came from someone else's mouth, it was like they were grinding my pride into the floor with their heel.

After she left, I stared at the food in the trash can, then at the room that practically screamed loneliness and emptiness.

Out of nowhere, I wondered whether I really didn't understand why my 30-year-old self wanted a divorce. Or did I just not want to understand?

That night, I sat at my desk, looking at that journal and the unsigned divorce papers.

My friend, Rick Tate, had once asked me over the phone what was so great about Angeline that I'd liked her for a full 15 years.

Honestly, I couldn't explain it.

When we first met, I could list a hundred good things about her. But the more I liked her, the harder it became to name any.

Wasn't that just how young love worked?

There was no reason. It was just about handing over all the love I had to one person and going ahead until I hit a wall.

In the end, I put the journal away. I figured that maybe I'd gotten too hung up on my pride by 30. Maybe I just didn't know how to handle certain things anymore.

"I actually stopped liking him a long time ago. I've done a lot of thinking this past month. Once I figured things out, I cut off contact with him. I heard his family went ahead and set him up with an arranged marriage… He's gone, and he's never going to show up in front of you again."Angeline watched me as she spoke, her gaze steady and serious.I frowned. "Why are you telling me all this? It has nothing to do with me."A faint light flickered in her eyes, stubborn and clumsy as she pushed on. "Caleb, I know what we had is over, but I was wondering… I was wondering if you could give me another chance. Let me pursue you this time. Please?"I could hear the tremor buried in her hopeful words, but my expression remained unchanged as I stood there in the sunlight. What came out of my mouth was cold and completely devoid of warmth."Don't bother, Angeline. I think I'm doing fine on my own these days. To me, you're just not that important anymore. Let's just go our separate ways."I

Angeline's smile froze on her face. She blinked, quickly composed herself, and mumbled an agreement.Over the next month, she showed up in front of me every single day in every way she could think of, just like when I used to chase after her.Expensive accessories, concert tickets, the latest luxury items—she threw them at me like money was no object.Back then, I would've been so moved I couldn't see straight. I would've thought Angeline was the person who treated me best in this world. But now, seeing the hopeful look in her eyes, all I felt was calm. Now and then, my heart would give a tiny lurch, but it wasn't for her—it was for the old me. Because right now, she was exactly who I used to be.Eventually, I couldn't help letting out a sigh. "Angeline, stop trying to fix this. We've been together for ten years. We both know exactly what kind of people we are. Stop following me, alright? Just go home."She stared at me, wanting to explain something, but I stopped her. In the end

I would say, "Angeline, you're so pretty."She would turn her back to me and ignore me. When she ignored me, I would just keep going. "Angeline, you're gorgeous."She would press a hand to her forehead and push my face away. "Enough. I get it."Then she would try to hide the tips of her ears, already flushed from embarrassment.Later, in the fourth year of our marriage, I came down with a really serious illness. Angeline, who was pampered and never lifted a finger at home, learned to cook for me.She brought cheesy grits with egg and set it in front of me. I hadn't even tasted it yet when I blurted out, "Anything you make is the best, darling!"She laughed, looking somewhat exasperated. She stuck one hand on her hip and shoveled a big spoonful straight into my mouth. "Not even eating can shut you up."Then I actually tasted the food. The eggs tasted funky, and she'd gone heavy on the salt. It was pretty bad.…Angeline's thoughts snapped back to the present. She lowered her ey

Angeline's hand froze midair. "What did you just say?"She stared at me in disbelief, like she hadn't heard me right."I said, let's get a divorce." I looked straight at her and studied the face I'd loved for more than ten years. In a matter of seconds, a storm of emotions flickered across her face—surprise, embarrassment, anger, and finally unease. At last, she spoke, her voice unsteady. "Caleb, you… you've gotta be joking. Why would you suddenly say something like that?"She clenched her right hand, acutely aware of the rings pressing against her skin. The ornaments on the bands almost dug into her flesh, hurting a little.I said, "I've regained my memories of the past ten years, so there's no need for us to drag this out any longer."Angeline's breathing hitched. "No way. I'm not agreeing to this."Her expression went rigid as she shot me down, trying to strong-arm me into changing my mind. But the version of me standing in front of her now was the 30-year-old me. Her emotio

I had no idea when Angeline and Shawn left, or how long I'd stood there, frozen in place.I sat down at my desk and, by moonlight, finally opened that Pandora's box of a journal."May 21, 2015. I proposed to Angeline, and she agreed! I married her! I want the whole world to know. From today on, I'm done being a pathetic simp!""March 9, 2017. Two years into our marriage, Angeline finally had her first meal at home. She said my cooking was great! All the time I spent learning to cook finally paid off.""August 31, 2018. While I was making dinner today, Angeline actually asked me to add some chili and cilantro. She said that since we're husband and wife, she can't always make me give in to her. She said she had to change for me, too.""May 21, 2019. It's our fourth wedding anniversary! Angeline asked me out to a movie and even prepared an anniversary gift! After the movie, she kissed me under the streetlight.""May 21, 2020. Angeline's been coming home more and more often lately. I

That was why the 30-year-old me had handed the choice to me—the version of me that only remembered being 20—even if it was for the last time.I texted Angeline. "Darling, what happened today was my fault. I'm sorry. Can you come home tomorrow? Please?"…Angeline did come back, but she brought Shawn with her.The confetti I'd prepared for a proposal rained down and circled the two of them, turning me into the punchline all over again.Angeline's face was thunderous. She brushed the streamers off herself with a scowl. "God, Caleb! I must be out of my mind. I knew there was something wrong with your head, and I still agreed to come back!"She turned around, grabbed Shawn's hand, and started to leave. As I watched her walk away without a backward glance, I suddenly thought of something. When I proposed to her ten years ago, had she also walked off looking this cold and fed up, leaving me there like an idiot?I grabbed her hand and stopped her. "No! You can't go!"Her eyes were fu
