Chapter 1

Author: Simply So
When Angeline Stone showed up with some guy to take me home from the hospital, I hid the divorce papers. I'd forgotten the last ten years of my life, but I still recognized the handwriting on that agreement. It was mine.

The date at the bottom was from just yesterday.

"Caleb, will you drop dead if you don't act out for even a day? Pull this again one more time, and I'm done with you. I mean it!"

Angeline leaned against the car window as she looked at me. Ten years had ultimately left their mark on her face, but one thing hadn't changed—how much she despised me.

The guy next to her was pretty handsome, and there was something vaguely familiar about him.

"Angie, don't be so hard on Mr. Gray," he said. "He just got into a car crash and lost his memory. He needs plenty of rest."

Angeline let out a sharp, mocking laugh, disdain flickering in her eyes. "Lost his memory? Please. This is just another one of his games. After all these years, he hasn't grown one bit."

She yanked open the back door. "Well? Get in the car. What are you standing there like an idiot for?"

If she'd said something that cold and contemptuous to someone else, they might not have argued, but they would at least have the self-respect to turn around and walk away.

Me? I just grinned and pulled open the front passenger door, sliding in. I said cheerily, "Don't rush me, darling. I'm sitting up here."

Angeline's brows drew together, like she was about to snap at me again.

I grabbed her hand and played the shameless fool. "If you don't let me ride shotgun, I'll act like a total lunatic in front of everyone. When that happens, you're the one who's gonna be embarrassed, not me."

Ten years ago, this was exactly how I'd pestered Angeline.

When she told me to stay away from her, I stopped wrapping an arm around her waist and settled for just holding her hand instead. When she told me to quit following her around, I started popping up here and there, acting like we'd run into each other by accident. When she told me to go left, I went right.

Sure, I'd been her simp for years, but at least I'd still managed to make her my wife after ten years. On top of that…

I sneaked a look at the strip of brown on her wrist peeking out from under her sleeve. I couldn't help the satisfied smile that tugged at my lips.

Capricorns were supposed to be straight-laced on the surface and slow to warm up. I'd looked it up.

Sure enough, Angeline's eyes turned dark and complicated as she stared at me, her expression shifting over and over. After a long moment, she looked away and turned to the man beside her. "Sorry, but I'm gonna have to stick you in the backseat."

A flash of hurt crossed the man's face, but he put on a gracious smile. "It's fine. Don't worry about it."

Once the two of them had worked things out, I buckled my seatbelt and rubbed my stomach. "Darling, let's go get something to eat. The food at the hospital was disgusting. I'm starving!"

Angeline came up with no fewer than ten excuses to say no, but in the end, she still drove us to a restaurant because I refused to back down.

The owner, Mr. Brown, knew me. Before I turned 20, I'd dragged Angeline here for meals all the time.

"Caleb? Angeline? I haven't seen you two in almost ten years. Look at you two, all grown up now!" Mr. Brown exclaimed.

"I actually stopped liking him a long time ago. I've done a lot of thinking this past month. Once I figured things out, I cut off contact with him. I heard his family went ahead and set him up with an arranged marriage… He's gone, and he's never going to show up in front of you again."Angeline watched me as she spoke, her gaze steady and serious.I frowned. "Why are you telling me all this? It has nothing to do with me."A faint light flickered in her eyes, stubborn and clumsy as she pushed on. "Caleb, I know what we had is over, but I was wondering… I was wondering if you could give me another chance. Let me pursue you this time. Please?"I could hear the tremor buried in her hopeful words, but my expression remained unchanged as I stood there in the sunlight. What came out of my mouth was cold and completely devoid of warmth."Don't bother, Angeline. I think I'm doing fine on my own these days. To me, you're just not that important anymore. Let's just go our separate ways."I

Angeline's smile froze on her face. She blinked, quickly composed herself, and mumbled an agreement.Over the next month, she showed up in front of me every single day in every way she could think of, just like when I used to chase after her.Expensive accessories, concert tickets, the latest luxury items—she threw them at me like money was no object.Back then, I would've been so moved I couldn't see straight. I would've thought Angeline was the person who treated me best in this world. But now, seeing the hopeful look in her eyes, all I felt was calm. Now and then, my heart would give a tiny lurch, but it wasn't for her—it was for the old me. Because right now, she was exactly who I used to be.Eventually, I couldn't help letting out a sigh. "Angeline, stop trying to fix this. We've been together for ten years. We both know exactly what kind of people we are. Stop following me, alright? Just go home."She stared at me, wanting to explain something, but I stopped her. In the end

I would say, "Angeline, you're so pretty."She would turn her back to me and ignore me. When she ignored me, I would just keep going. "Angeline, you're gorgeous."She would press a hand to her forehead and push my face away. "Enough. I get it."Then she would try to hide the tips of her ears, already flushed from embarrassment.Later, in the fourth year of our marriage, I came down with a really serious illness. Angeline, who was pampered and never lifted a finger at home, learned to cook for me.She brought cheesy grits with egg and set it in front of me. I hadn't even tasted it yet when I blurted out, "Anything you make is the best, darling!"She laughed, looking somewhat exasperated. She stuck one hand on her hip and shoveled a big spoonful straight into my mouth. "Not even eating can shut you up."Then I actually tasted the food. The eggs tasted funky, and she'd gone heavy on the salt. It was pretty bad.…Angeline's thoughts snapped back to the present. She lowered her ey

Angeline's hand froze midair. "What did you just say?"She stared at me in disbelief, like she hadn't heard me right."I said, let's get a divorce." I looked straight at her and studied the face I'd loved for more than ten years. In a matter of seconds, a storm of emotions flickered across her face—surprise, embarrassment, anger, and finally unease. At last, she spoke, her voice unsteady. "Caleb, you… you've gotta be joking. Why would you suddenly say something like that?"She clenched her right hand, acutely aware of the rings pressing against her skin. The ornaments on the bands almost dug into her flesh, hurting a little.I said, "I've regained my memories of the past ten years, so there's no need for us to drag this out any longer."Angeline's breathing hitched. "No way. I'm not agreeing to this."Her expression went rigid as she shot me down, trying to strong-arm me into changing my mind. But the version of me standing in front of her now was the 30-year-old me. Her emotio

I had no idea when Angeline and Shawn left, or how long I'd stood there, frozen in place.I sat down at my desk and, by moonlight, finally opened that Pandora's box of a journal."May 21, 2015. I proposed to Angeline, and she agreed! I married her! I want the whole world to know. From today on, I'm done being a pathetic simp!""March 9, 2017. Two years into our marriage, Angeline finally had her first meal at home. She said my cooking was great! All the time I spent learning to cook finally paid off.""August 31, 2018. While I was making dinner today, Angeline actually asked me to add some chili and cilantro. She said that since we're husband and wife, she can't always make me give in to her. She said she had to change for me, too.""May 21, 2019. It's our fourth wedding anniversary! Angeline asked me out to a movie and even prepared an anniversary gift! After the movie, she kissed me under the streetlight.""May 21, 2020. Angeline's been coming home more and more often lately. I

That was why the 30-year-old me had handed the choice to me—the version of me that only remembered being 20—even if it was for the last time.I texted Angeline. "Darling, what happened today was my fault. I'm sorry. Can you come home tomorrow? Please?"…Angeline did come back, but she brought Shawn with her.The confetti I'd prepared for a proposal rained down and circled the two of them, turning me into the punchline all over again.Angeline's face was thunderous. She brushed the streamers off herself with a scowl. "God, Caleb! I must be out of my mind. I knew there was something wrong with your head, and I still agreed to come back!"She turned around, grabbed Shawn's hand, and started to leave. As I watched her walk away without a backward glance, I suddenly thought of something. When I proposed to her ten years ago, had she also walked off looking this cold and fed up, leaving me there like an idiot?I grabbed her hand and stopped her. "No! You can't go!"Her eyes were fu
