ALEX

He saved me.

Delusional as I want to claim to be, the truth played out right in front of me. Adrian swooped in and saved me before things could get out of hand.

Sure, he didn't once glance at me… but… it still counts, right?

Maybe… he still cares? Somehow?

“Alex!”

The voice hurls right into my ear, jolting me out of soliloquy.

“Heh?” I turn to glance at an unimpressed Sage. “Did you… say something?”

“Where the hell is your head at?” She grumbles. “We just got our asses handed to us by Black Bloods and you're daydreaming.”

“Take it easy on her, we were all jumped” Zane responds, but Sage's not having any of it.

The argument keeps swinging back and forth, both of them completely oblivious to the fact that we make it across the border and back to the car without being approached by any other member of the rival pack.

Wouldn't be surprised if Adrian took care of that as well.

The beat of realization drops cold into my heart. Mnn. He was probably just doing his job as Alpha. Not th

SAGEWhy didn't I sense them? Those Black Blood bastards had the jump on us before I could even react. How did I let that happen?!I barely even notice my tightened fists until the crack of the weapon in my hand brings me back to the present. My eyes catch the broken blade, and a short burst of memory hits me hard.“Keep pulling your punches, and one day you'll meet someone too bored to take you serious.”My muscles coil on instinct. That voice. That unimpressed expression. Years have passed since I was rescued from the Lnnes that beat strength into my body, yet the memories still plague me without relent. “Calm down” I tell myself, exhaling as I try to return normalcy to my system. A lost cause. It's the same thoughts that have been spiraling in my mind since we got back. If Adrian hadn't come, would that have been the end?Rustling behind me forces my senses to diverge once more. I glance back and Alex's sleeping behind me. Papers sprawled underneath her head, hair whipping ac

ADRIANI've been here less than a minute, and I already remember how much I hated this place. If it were only the thick, freezing breeze carrying needling air from time to time, it would've been manageable. But no. It's not just that. The whispering of winds across the trees that border these grounds, the way my skin crawls with every step I took into this place……and then, Her scent. That familiar, spine-crippling scent.I hate it!“Get her out of here. You all reach border. I'll meet you at the packhouse.”“But—”“Go” I assure Zane before he can ask. I don't look back at him though, my eyes on her, and her's on me through the mirror in front of her.“Bye Alex” she smirks as Zane carries her alongside Sage and the trio dissapear into the forest’s bed.A beat of silence lasts between us, the guided glance holding for more than a couple seconds. Then, she speaks. “You could've taken it a little easier on him though” she turns, glancing at her monster of a henchman. “I did” I answer.

ALEXThe murmuring in the background steadily becomes more audible. Movement, and the shifting of bodies on either side of me.My eyes are heavy, but the hold on my consciousness relaxes by the second. When I finally find the strength to lift my eyelids, I have no idea where I’m at. Well, sort of. I know I'm in a room with Rachel seated on a stool a couple steps away, and her monster of a pack member flanking her right.“Finally awake?” She says in that fake-innocent, annoyingly cheery voice. I try to scan the room, but my vision's returning a bit slower than I'd want. Still, I'm able to pick up some fuzzy details. Hard earth underneath me. I dont think we're inside a house even though the four corners surrounding me suggest I'm in a room. A couple vases with healthy flowers on either side of the mirror behind her, and the only source of light… the window just above her, letting sunlight spill into the room.“Where… are they?” I struggle to get up. Surprisingly, nothings holding

  • An Alpha's Obsession    Chapter 74: Coincidence at the Border

ALEX These aren't the borders I remember. We stop just across from it and my body soaks up the details it's been dying to focus on since the drive up here. The scent of cold, almost stale air fills my nose, combatted only by what has to be blood and nothing else. Beyond us, a communion of trees and shrubs, strikingly different from the part of the plain all three of us stand.“What happened to sigils?” I mutter, and they both hide the chuckle working in their throats.“These aren't the pack borders. They're the clans” Zane says, like I understand what the difference is. All it looks like is the end of a desert where the stretch of barrenness meets cold chill of darkness. There's this awful taste at the back of my throat, gently rising as we scan the premises for foreign scents or unusual faces… or whatever Zane was muttering about back there. Can't piece together most of what he's saying when my senses keep clashing between every step we take across this place. Something feels

  • An Alpha's Obsession    Chapter 73: A Party?

Chapter 73 ALEX The armory's slowly become the room I visit the more often in the packhouse. Though it's more Sage's job than it is mine, clearing the weaponry used for border patrol and training sessions is a lot less burdensome than being on the grounds and actually participating is. It also means less frequent moments of avoiding gazes and pretending I'm actually concerned about training or patrol rotations. Though on the downside, it's hard to pretend I don't feel Sage's glances from the table beside me every now and then. “Say it” I scribble on some logbooks as more weapons fail the viability test. “You know you want to.” For a moment, she hesitates, throwing on that unbothered cape again. My attention returns to the papers, and she lets it go… …Or so I think. “You can’t keep coming in here and stinking the whole place with that depressed look.” She tosses a pen in my direction but I smack it away before it can hit me. “I've told you you don't have to come
