Chapter 1

I was still reeling from the bombshell that Chester Graham was tying the knot.

Chester shot me a look, his brow furrowed in annoyance.

"Aren't you going to hurry up?"

I hung my head, flustered, and scrambled to gather my ripped clothes. "Got it, Mr. Graham."

I said, slowly rising to my feet and gingerly dressing in my tattered outfit.

As I was about to leave, limping from the pain in my legs, Chester's voice stopped me.

"Wait."

I spun around, a spark of hope igniting within me.

However, before I could get a good look at him, a coat landed over my head.

"Your clothes are a mess. Wear this coat outside.

"And don't forget your birth control."

His words were like an icy shower, dousing any lingering expectations I had.

I walked out, my steps rigid, and gently shut the door behind me.

I should have known better than to harbor any feelings for him after all those years.

Back in my room, I fought back tears and dug out the birth control pill from my dresser, swallowing it without a second thought.

That was my reality for the past three years.

I pulled out a mirror to fix myself up before heading to work.

As I touched the marks on my neck, I was briefly reminded of their lingering warmth.

My story with Chester started by sheer chance.

At a party one year, a rival of the Graham family spiked Chester's drink, which I accidentally drank in its entirety.

Since I was always expected to be Chester's shadow, I was the only one there when the drug hit.

Overwhelmed by its effects, I collapsed, crying out for him to help me.

Chester, ever the straight arrow, found himself caught up in my turmoil, unable to break free.

In moments of distress, he would haul me onto the bed and forcefully rid me of the drug's lingering effects.

When my eyes fluttered open, still dazed, the Graham parents were already upon me, their hands delivering sharp slaps.

"For eighteen years, we've taken care of you, and you repay us by drugging and tempting our son!"

Before I could even grab my clothes, the Grahams' guards yanked me down to the basement for a daily dose of their cruel punishment.

By the time they pieced together the truth – that it was all a big mistake – they let me go, a battered shell of myself, bloodied and gasping for life.

Chester's gaze was a tangle of emotions as he looked at me. "Why didn't you say anything?"

I could not confess to him the truth – that part of me indeed wished for something more.

I just smiled weakly from the bed. "It's fine."

Maybe Chester got a taste for the thrill, because time and again, he would summon me to his room, clear-headed, and after our secret moments, he would send me away without a second thought.

He never let me stay the night; no matter how exhausted he was, he would always make sure I left.

However, this time was different; he kept me there, on and off, all night long.

In the morning, I freshened up, slipped into fresh clothes, and set out to prepare Chester's breakfast.

I was not like the other maids in the Graham house; I was not bogged down with the usual chores. I was there for Chester alone.

Since he was a boy, Chester was sickly. The family tried everything, and someone suggested that maybe what he needed was the steady company of a kind-hearted woman. So they scoured the country and found me in an orphanage.

I was just a seven-year-old girl then, and Chester was an eight-year-old boy.

The Grahams only took a chance on me, never expecting much. Yet, by day five at Chester's side, he was noticeably better.

That's why I stayed.

As a kid, I was his playmate. Later, his study buddy. After he graduated, he did not need me shadowing him, and I became his personal maid.

He was always distant, except for those moments. Like when he would remember my birthday and surprise me with a stunning necklace.

Or those drunken nights when he would softly hold my hand as I handed him lemon soda, a gentle smile playing on his lips.

"Ann, you're not like anyone else, you're the most special," he would murmur, his words laced with a hint of something more.

I foolishly let those words carve a place in my heart, allowing forbidden feelings to bloom.

I wanted to believe he cared for me, even just a little.

That was all I needed.

However, today, reality hit hard. It was all a fantasy.

His heart belonged to Wendy Lawson, the heiress with the silver spoon.

I set his breakfast down, everything in its place, ready to be served. He did not need me anymore, and I had too much self-respect to overstay my welcome.

Blindfolded and clueless, I was at Chester's mercy. When I finally could see again, I was in a bedroom, the windows sealed shut, forcing the lights to stay on even during the day. However, the decor was familiar: I was still in Francoria. That was a small comfort. I exhaled and settled in to wait for Gilbert's rescue. The travel agency had a nifty feature: they equipped both tourists and guides with locators to keep everyone from getting separated.Chester barged in with a plate of food and plopped down next to me, gripping me tightly. He nuzzled into my neck, inhaling deeply."I've missed you so much."He clung on, refusing to let go, and tried to spoon-feed me. "Here, let me."I slapped the spoon away. "What's the point? I don't feel anything for you anymore."The spoon, made of glass, shattered on the floor.Chester squeezed tighter, and I struggled to catch my breath."Shut up!"You won't eat? Fine, let's do something else!"He tried to flip me over, to pin me down.C

"Is that car tailing us?" Gilbert's hands were white-knuckled on the steering wheel.I glanced back, feeling my pulse race.It was Chester, just as Gilbert feared."Step on it!" I gripped the seatbelt for dear life. "We can't let them catch us!"Gilbert hit the gas, and the old car groaned as if in pain.He shot me a quick look. "Are you in debt to him? Or is it?""It's worse than debt," I said with a bitter laugh. Before I could say more, the black sedan surged forward and skidded to a halt in front of us.Gilbert braked hard, and I nearly headbutted the windshield. The car door flew open, and there was Chester, looking gaunt but with eyes that burned with intensity."Ann,"He reached for my wrist."Come home with me."I recoiled. "Chester, I've quit!""Who said you could quit?" His sneer was icy as his eyes darted to Gilbert at the wheel."So, this is your new beau?"Gilbert snapped off his seatbelt, stepped forward, and shoved Chester back."Sir, you need to back of

I did not linger in Amarion after touching down. Instead, I hopped the next flight to Francoria. The Grahams lined my pockets well over the years, enough to tide me over until I landed the next gig.I was not exactly a local expert, so I picked out a travel agency that looked alright and snagged myself a personal tour guide. My guide was a fair-skinned young man, nothing like Chester with his intense vibe; that guy was all soft edges and a delicate air about him.He greeted me with an easy smile and a handshake."I'm Gilbert Harris."He gave me a quick once-over and chuckled. "You don't strike me as someone from around here."I laughed, caught off guard. "Is it that obvious?"Gilbert gave a playful smirk. "It's just that you've got this unique quality about you."Serene and mild, yet you stand out, reminds me of my mom when she was younger. I'd love for you to meet her someday; she'd take you right away."I felt a warm blush spread across my cheeks and managed a thankful gri

Wendy barely reached the bottom of the stairs when she overheard Chester's declaration. She stood there, stunned, before the meaning sank in."What are you saying?"Her lips quivered, and tears welled up in her eyes. "We're engaged, we've kissed, and now you're telling me you don't love me?"What does that make me?"Chester could not bring himself to meet Wendy's gaze. "I'm sorry."Wendy lunged at him, seizing his collar as tears streamed down her face. "I don't want your apologies!"I don't care, the whole city knows about us now. You leave me for a servant, what will people think of me?"We're going to the courthouse to get married, right now!"With that, Wendy grabbed Chester's hand and tried to drag him out. However, Chester stood his ground, unyielding to Wendy's pulling. For the first time, Wendy realized how strong Chester was; she could not move him an inch.Chester finally spoke, his voice calm."Isn't it better to stop the bleeding once you realize there's been a

Chester hit the hay early on the night of the engagement party. When he woke up to no reply from me, he just clicked his tongue in annoyance and let it be. Life went on as usual for him after that, but he could not shake a nagging sense of unease. Whether he was hanging out with friends or shopping with Wendy, he kept checking his phone for a message that never came.He only gave me a week off, and by day six, with still no word from me, he was so irked he drowned his frustrations in booze at a bar."She should be back tonight," he figured, trying to shake off the hangover.Reaching out, he expected to find the lemon soda I always left for him after his nights out drinking. However, this time, the nightstand was bare."Huh, nothing there. That's not like Ann," he mused, ruffling his already disheveled hair. He did not want to think too hard about it, so he just pulled the covers over his head, hoping for a bit more sleep. Then came a knock at the door."Chester, are you awake?"

The maid's quarters never felt so crowded. The venom Wendy had shown earlier was gone. She sat by my bed, tears streaming down her face as she tended to my wounds."Does it hurt?"Her words were gentle, but her hands were not, pressing the cotton swab firmly into my injury.I clenched my teeth against the pain, shaking my head.Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Chester watching my wound intently. He must have seen Wendy's roughness, but he stood by, hands in pockets, silently condoning her actions. After Wendy finished, I was drenched in a cold sweat from the pain.He did not spare me a glance; instead, he took a handkerchief and tenderly wiped the tears from Wendy's eyes."Enough crying. She's getting what she deserves, and she didn't even do a good job."Wendy nestled into Chester's arms, and I looked away, unable to watch. On the table was the bouquet Chester gave me earlier. Despite days of careful tending, it wilted, its colors faded. After escorting Wendy out, C
