A man in his mid-fifties walked in. He was a few inches shorter than Killian, had a bit of a beer belly, and wore a crooked smile on his face.

“Uncle Ted, you have terrible timing,” Killian shook his head. I swallowed a chuckle—those were his exact words.

“I apologize for being late, but I couldn’t miss the chance to meet your girl now, could I?” He walked toward us with a light step and looked at me with warm, shining brown eyes. “Hello, love. I’m this guy’s uncle and only living elder at this point. Some would say I deserve a little respect,” he added with a mock scolding glance.

Killian just rolled his eyes in response.

I took Ted’s extended hand.

“I’m Mila.”

“I’ve heard a lot of wonderful things about you,” he said, gripping my hand with both of his.

Ted’s smile was infectious, and I grinned. It was clear he was the happy-go-lucky type.

“Alright, now let go of her hand,” Killian said, tapping Ted’s hand lightly.

Ted pulled back with an exagger

I fell asleep in the car while we were returning back and opened my eyes to Killian gently picking me up in his arms as we were in the underground parking."I can..." But it hurt to talk now, as the adrenaline rush is worn off, my whole body felt numb—except that my wound hurt so much I couldn't move my arm."Shhhh," he stopped me, and I didn’t protest as he walked and took me to the elevator.Once we were back in the condo, he put me down on the couch and once again disappeared from my view. The next moment, he came back with a bottle of tablets in his hand and a glass of water. I leaned back on the couch, unable to sit straight as he put the tablet in my mouth and held a glass of water to my lips. I swallowed it. I squeezed my eyes shut for a moment."It will help with the pain," he said, gently caressing my hair.I leaned into his touch, and then I felt the softness of his lips on the corner of mine, and then he kissed my forehead. I opened my eyes wide to loo

And my luck, I did try to dodge, and in the end, it jumped right where my arm and shoulder met. The pain made my head buzz and my vision blurred a little. The warm crimson liquid soaked through my blouse, and I shook my head. As my vision cleared, I swallowed my whimper and kneed her in the stomach. She staggered back, pulling out the knife. I gasped and my knees buckled, but I grabbed the knife from the ground and picked it up with my left hand, unable to move from the pain. I felt the cold sweat on my neck. I heard a rush, my vision clearing for a moment. She lunged, and without much thought, I jammed it.It all stopped for a moment when I looked up, and she once again staggered back, this time stumbling to the wall. Her dark, shocked eyes met mine, and I followed her gaze to where her hand was pressed. The knife was stabbed into her side. She choked as she slid down to the ground, and I covered my wound, stumbling my way to the door and opening it. With all my might, I sh

Killian walked in two hours later while I stood in the kitchen, a glass of water in my hand, on my way to the bedroom. He was in formal attire. He stopped in his tracks, took a step back, and turned to me. I leaned against the counter, letting him take in the full view as his eyes roamed over me without a word."How do I look?" I asked, crossing my ankles and raising an eyebrow. The teal dress flowed elegantly around my figure—flattering, but not clinging. I’d paired it with silver heels and styled my hair in a simple, elegant twist, leaving a single red strand loose to frame my face.I waited patiently, watching him. His eyes never left me as he walked closer, the echo of his shoes tapping across the floor growing louder with every step. His gaze didn’t waver, and I couldn’t look away either. Every detail of that custom-tailored suit molded to him perfectly. He looked both dominating and disarmingly charming."You are breathtaking," he whispered, his eyes fi

When I opened my eyes the next day, I heard utensils clicking. I threw off the covers and pulled on Killian’s shirt that had been left on the floor. I followed the sounds to the kitchen and found Killian in simple grey sweatpants and a T-shirt, cooking. It was charming how he moved around the kitchen, as if he'd been doing it for years."I didn't know you could cook?"He turned to me with a smile. "Good morning, love."The way he said 'love' slowed down as he took me in. His eyes darkened, and I pulled out a chair, sitting down and crossing my bare legs—completely in his view.He turned back to the counter and plated whatever he had taken out of the pan."It's part of the training and..." He took a deep breath, then turned to me and placed the two plates on the table. "You should consider changing your clothes."His voice was deep and thick, his gaze unblinking as it roamed over me. I suppressed a shiver."Why?" I leaned on the table, resting my chin

"You are you, Killian Knight."Killian turned to me, and his face turned to stone. He turned back without saying anything; there was a stillness about him.I stepped forward."Stop," he said, his voice devoid of all emotion."Why?" I asked."You don't want to be here," he paused. "Here with me," he said."And you know where I want to be?" I didn’t listen to him and stood beside him. He finally looked at me. He was shrouded in darkness, but he didn't look dangerous. He looked devastating, and my heart clenched in my chest."After knowing what we know now, I can't bring myself to...""So after all the chasing and tormenting me, breaking down every wall I ever had," my voice came out thick, "after making me fall in love with you, you can just decide whether I want to be with you or not?" I looked squarely into his eyes. His eyes hardened. There was no sign of light in them when he looked at me.I stepped forward again."What he did..." his jaw ti
