LOGINHe opened his eyes to everything white. He was lying on a white floor surrounded by white walls. He moved his head, and the world spun. He was strapped into a white jacket, the kind they use for mental patients in a mental institution.
“Shit,” he murmured and sat up.
The room was soundproof. The floors and walls were cushioned; they were soft against his skin. He could see a square mirror on the right side of the room—a double mirror. He could guess where they could see him, but he couldn’t see who was on the other side.
The white light hurt his vision. Nothing in that room indicated where he was or what time of day it was. He struggled to free himself from the jacket, but it was no use.
“Get me off this thing!!” he screamed, knowing someone was listening.
A small black box was hung high in one corner of the room, and a tiny red light turned on when he screamed. Not long after, the white door opened, and Tony walked into the room with a chair.
He put the chair in front of Diego and sat facing him. “I’m glad you’re awake ... I had to sedate you ... I hope you understand.”
Diego glared at him. He had let his guard down by trusting him, and now he was strapped in a jacket like a madman.
“Are you ready to talk?” Tony asked.
“Where’s Ariana? I’m not talking until I know where she is.”
Tony took a tablet from his jacket and tapped on it to look for something. He showed the tablet to Diego.
“She’s here ... she’s safe ...”
It was live footage from another room. Ariana was sitting on a bed in a small room that looked like a holding cell.
“You locked her in a cell?”
“It’s only temporary ... everyone is still on edge with the news; we need her cooperation; we will move her to a more comfortable room once we get everything under control.”
Diego hung his head low. The world inside was moving in slow motion. “How long was I out? What time is it?”
Tony checked his watch: “Approximately eight hours. Time is of no importance here. You are at Interpol’s special headquarters. We have permission to use their facility for this mission before we can make a deal and send you back to Lancaster.”
Diego scoffed, “Lancaster ... what makes you so sure I will cut a deal with the lot of you?”
“Because Ariana has agreed to make a deal with us.”
Diego jolted to his feet. “You bastard! That’s a lie!”
“Calm down ... they’re watching and listening; you will be put down again if you are not willing to discuss this peacefully.”
“So this is coerced participation, then? That’s not a deal ... you’re forcing us to cooperate with whatever the hell your mission is ... fuck your mission!”
Tony raised both palms. “Diego, calm down. Please sit down and listen to what I have to say.”
He wanted to pull the chair off his ass and smash the mirror on the wall. How could he have let his guard down and landed himself in that position? And put Ariana in a compromised state with him. But he knew at that point he had no choice but to listen to what Tony had to say. So he sat on the floor and swallowed his anger.
“As I said ... we have been investigating these families for 10 years. Our main objective is to shut down all their underground operations that have developed exponentially throughout the years ... they have to be stopped ... these illegal operations are devastating a lot of people, and they are getting richer and more dangerous from it ... soon they will be unstoppable, and we can’t have that.”
Diego stared at him blankly. “What does that have to do with Ariana and me?”
“We can’t process them legally ... that will take too long ... they are untouchable by the law; they are too powerful for legal procedures. We’ve tried that path so many times, and none of them worked ... they have to destroy themselves from within.”
He was listening.
“We have agents working undercover within the family’s close circles; we have penetrated their network quite significantly ... they’ve been doing it for 7 years ... we need you to go in there with them and execute the mission once and for all.”
“You want me to kill them?”
Tony waited to reply. “It won’t be that easy. It has to be done smoothly, or you will blow everyone’s cover. It will take some time. You have to earn their trust before we can follow through on the plans, but yes... that’s the endgame. Every one of those mob bosses must die so we can destroy their network and underbosses in the midst of chaos.”
“And Armand?” Diego asked.
“He’s the key to everything. We need him alive until the mission is fully executed. He is currently at the top of the food chain. They all want the position, but according to their law, they have to obey the hierarchy rules ... Armand is the decision-maker now; if we can control him ... we can control the entire network.”
Diego laughed lightly, “You think you can control that psycho motherfucker? He’s crazy ... no one can persuade him to do anything ... he has a mind of his own.”
Tony fell silent. Diego glanced at him and immediately realized why they were in that room.
“No!” he shouted. “No! You fucking bastard!! Leave her out of this!” Diego lunged at Tony, but he stood up.
Diego fell forward with the chair. “No! You can’t send her back there. They’ll kill her!”
“She already agreed,” Tony said.
Tony’s last sentence sent him into hysteria. He was kicking and screaming at the thought of Ariana going back to the hell they had fought so hard to get away from.
Three people in medical uniforms entered through the door and pulled Diego away from Tony. They stabbed him with a needle, the same one he had injected before in the alleyway.
“We still have so many things to talk about ... when you’ve calmed down,” was the last thing Tony said to him before his vision was blurry again.
Diego was practicing his new routine at the headquarters: target practice. Different types of guns were lined up next to him as he emptied the ammunition one weapon at a time. His eyes were focused on the target at a 200-meter range. He didn’t miss a single shot.Tony came by to update him on the mission—a mission to which he had succumbed and committed himself.“Ariana had been reunited with her husband,” Tony began.Diego refilled his ammo in silence and started shooting again. It had been over a week since she had been flown to Lancaster, and this was the first he had heard of any news about her.“It was a successful transition ... she didn’t get any challenge from the family ... yet.”Diego put down his gun and moved to the gun next to it.“They’re going to have an internal meeting within the Lombardo-Montenero family; somebody killed Carlos Messina ... nobody knows who did it yet ... our best guest is one of the other families; they want to start a war.”Sometimes, Tony gives out
“New reports are coming in on the development of the Lombardo-Montenero case.Carlos Messina was found dead this morning during house arrest, awaiting trial for the Lombardo-Montenero wedding massacre in June last year. The 68-year-old tycoon was accused of orchestrating the attack on his business rival's family. Incriminating evidence was found at the crime scene, and a series of threats against Cossimo Lombardo was recorded, which pointed to the Messinas dynasty as the culprit of the threats. However, Carlos Messina denied any allegations against him and his family and filed a countersuit against Armand Lombardo for defamation and false accusations. The case had been halted since Armand Lombardo fell into a coma six months ago, and the case is now being postponed again after the death of the sole suspect in the attack. Police are investigating the cause of the death of Carlos Messina. We will have more on this later. Stay tuned.”Pasquale stood by the bedroom window, looking out to
They flew Ariana back to Lancaster and placed her in the heart of the city. They left breadcrumbs everywhere for Pasquale’s men to find her and made it look as if their effort had paid off, as if they had finally found the missing Princess. She was picked up from a convenience store where she was buying her everyday stuff. They ushered her into the family limo without resistance, and she met Pasquale inside the car, just like old times.“Hello, Ariana ... it’s good to see you again,” Pasquale greeted her with a suspicious smile. She couldn’t say the same thing to him, so she kept silent.“I’m surprised to find you here in Lancaster ... I thought you’d be in Guatemala or Guyana somewhere,” he said calmly. She took off her hoodie and was dressed casually, the way she had been for the past six months. “I came back here when I heard the news.”He raised his brows. “Really? So you were thinking about coming back?”She swallowed hard. “I wanted to see how he’s doing,” she said, clearing her
Something changed inside him after that meeting. He turned inward and kept to himself—silent, lost in his thoughts, alone with his demons.Everybody lied to him.The government lied to him when they killed his parents and took away his youth from under him. Tony lied when he told him the mission was for his benefit. Ariana lied when she threw her arms around his neck and told him she wanted to run away with him. She lied when she said she didn’t want to go back to Armand. That meant she lied when she told him she loved him.Their lies have brought him to that place. He was neither here nor there. He has no past to return to or future to look forward to.Tony entered his cell with a stack of documents in his hands. He placed them on the table and took one folder to open.“These are the men you have managed to put to death these past 10 years,” Tony said, then read their names, ages, occupations, and the places where they were assassinated. It was Diego’s lifelong work.“I kept track of
He didn’t just ask for the monitor to be placed in his cell so he could look at Ariana. He wanted it there so he could study where she was kept. He had managed to release himself from his shackles and figure out how to get out of his cell, and after a few days of observing the live feed, he knew exactly where she was. When the lights went out at 8 PM, he put his plan in motion. He sneaked out of his cell and passed the guards undetected. He had his sniper’s footsteps and hiding ability. He made his way to the fourth floor of the building, where Ariana was held in one of the rooms. The holding facility had a similar routine to that of a prison. The room was dark; she was already in bed. He picked the lock on the door and went inside. He could see her silhouette covered in a blanket. It was the room he had been watching 24 hours a day for the past 10 days.He put his hand on her mouth. Her eyes bulged in terror. He put his index finger to his lips. When she recognized him, she calmed do
When Armand was taken to the hospital for what seemed to be a fatal drug overdose, he thought it was the end of him. His brain had not fully recovered from the previous overdose he had suffered only days earlier, and the fact that he had stopped breathing for some time was something very few people, if any, would survive. They pumped his stomach, put him on a ventilator, heart monitor, and every medical support tool they could provide to Armand Lombardo that night, and he miraculously defied the odds and started breathing again.Pasquale was the first person on site after the Chef answered his phone and called emergency. The boy was limp on his bed with white foam coming out of his mouth. His eyes flipped, and he could only see the white parts from his parted eyelids. He wasn’t breathing, and he looked very much dead. The first and last thing on his mind was, where is Ariana? The Chef said she was nowhere to be found. She was calling them for dinner and got no answer. Once she decided
