LOGINARIA POV
Just 'thanks'?" I whispered aloud to the dark ceiling of my bedroom.
I stared down at the single, freezing word sitting on my screen. My chest felt hollow and heavy. Just two days ago, we were exchanging late-night messages, sending bold pictures, and sharing deep, intense secrets. He had been so protective, so eager to talk to me. Now, he sounded like a stranger who couldn't be bothered to type a full sentence.
I swallowed the lump of anxiety in my throat, refusing to give up that easily. Maybe he was just tired after hockey practice. Maybe he had a rough day.
[Secret Girl]: How was school for you today, Captain? Did you have a good day?
I held my breath, watching the screen. A full minute passed before the text bubble popped up.
(310) 555-0149: Just fine.
Two words. Cold, short, and completely plain.
I bit my lip, forcing my fingers to keep typing. I wanted that spark back. I wanted the funny, charming, protective boy who made my heart race in the middle of the night. If he wasn't going to start the conversation, I would just have to entertain him myself.
[Secret Girl]: Well, my day at school was an absolute nightmare! You won't believe what happened. I got assigned a major term project, and the professor paired me with the most annoying, unbearable guy on this entire campus.
I paused, tapping my chin thoughtfully before my fingers flew across the keypad.
[Secret Girl]: Seriously, he is so unbelievably ugly! Inside and out!
I hovered over the send button for a second before clicking it. Almost instantly, a notification popped up on the screen.
A huge, foolish grin spread across my face. I let out a loud sigh of relief, hugging my pillow. It worked! I had finally broken his cold mood.
Eager to keep him laughing, I sat up against my headboard, typing furiously.
[Secret Girl]: I’m not even kidding! I was already upset about the project, but seeing that my partner is ugly with the absolute worst mouth made me want to throw up right there in the lecture hall.
[Secret Girl]: Sometimes I honestly wish he would just wake up tomorrow morning completely unable to talk. Like, his vocal cords just vanish overnight! That way nobody has to listen to him saying trash things to people or looking down on everyone like he’s a god.
I hit send and waited, my heart beating with happy anticipation. Seconds later, the response lit up my screen.
(310) 555-0149: Damn. And here I thought I was the only one who hated being paired up in class today.
My eyes widened in surprise.
[Secret Girl]: Wait, you got stuck with a bad partner too?
(310) 555-0149: The absolute worst. I also wish my partner would wake up tomorrow unable to speak a single word. I am so sick and tired of looking at her miserable, cheap, petty face all day.
A loud, sudden burst of laughter escaped my lips. I covered my mouth with both hands so I wouldn't wake up the entire house. It was insane how similar our lives were! Here I was, complaining about my terrible stepbrother, while Crestwood's star hockey captain was dealing with his own annoying, cheap partner in class.
[Secret Girl]: Haha! No way! We really are two suffering souls, aren't we? 😂
(310) 555-0149: Tell me about it. It’s like a punishment.
[Secret Girl]: Right?! Why do professors insist on forcing us to stand next to trash?
(310) 555-0149: Because they hate us. Honestly, whenever we feel stressed or down again, we should just use this chat to hurl insults at our terrible partners together.
My heart did a happy flip in my chest.
[Secret Girl]: Oh, I can definitely do that right now! I have a whole list ready!
(310) 555-0149: Go ahead. Let it out, Secret Girl. I'm listening.
I kicked my legs under the blanket, giggling like a madwoman as I started typing out every single insult I had wanted to throw at Jaxon all day.
[Secret Girl]: Okay, first of all, he dresses like he owns the universe, but his personality is as cold and dark as a refrigerator! He walks around with his messy hair and sharp gray eyes, sneering at everyone like we're dirt on his expensive shoes!
(310) 555-0149: Lol! My turn! She wears giant, ridiculous clothes that look like oversized trash bags, hiding away because she knows she doesn't belong in polite society!
I giggled at his response, totally oblivious to the description, completely focused on venting about my stepbrother.
[Secret Girl]: He is a spoiled, arrogant billionaire brat who thinks money can buy him a heart! He acts like a big, tough king, but deep down, he’s just a moody, dramatic baby who throws temper tantrums over dinner tables and breaks glasses!
(310) 555-0149: LOL! She’s a loud, defensive, mouthy parasite who thinks she can talk back when she's literally living off charity!
[Secret Girl]: He’s a cold-hearted bully who trips people in hallways because his own soul is hollow and empty!
(310) 555-0149: She’s a clumsy, dramatic crybaby who makes a scene over a few scattered books!
[Secret Girl]: Haha! Exactly! They both deserve to be thrown into a trash can together!
(310) 555-0149: Agreed. Sealed shut and dropped in the ocean. LOL!
I collapsed back onto my pillows, rolling over on my stomach as tears of pure laughter leaked from the corners of my eyes. It felt so amazingly good to vent. For the first time all day, the heavy stress of Jaxon's bullying and my mother's harsh words completely disappeared.
Blake and I were so relatable. We understood each other on a level nobody else did.
I lay there in the quiet dark, kicking my feet happily, clutching my phone close to my chest as I waited for his next message. The cold, distant stranger from thirty minutes ago was completely gone, replaced by the intimate, playful connection we shared.
The phone vibrated softly in my palm.
I turned it over, expecting another funny joke or a laughing emoji. But when I read the text sitting on the screen, my breath caught in my throat, and my heart skipped a heavy, sudden beat.
(310) 555-0149: You know, we've been talking for days now, but you're still holding back. Tell me something real, Secret Girl. Tell me something you've never told anyone else before.
ARIA POV“Don't flatter yourself, Vance. Nothing happened last night."I spat the words out the moment Aria stepped into the sunlit kitchen, my voice dripping with as much icy venom as I could muster.I stood by the marble island, clad in my usual sharp black button-down and trousers, leaning casually against the counter with a steaming mug of black coffee in my hand. On the outside, I looked completely composed, relaxed, and in control. But on the inside, my mind was a chaotic mess.Every time I closed my eyes, I didn't see my cold, calculated plans or the image of my vintage Ducati. I saw Aria's soft dark eyes in the flash of lightning. I felt the steady, reassuring warmth of her hands wrapped around mine, guiding me out of the suffocating dark while I choked like a pathetic coward on the floor. It made my stomach twist in knots. I hated her for seeing me like that. I hated her even more for not using it against me.Aria froze near the doorway, her hand lingering on her backpack str
JAXON POV“What the hell was the meaning of that stunt you pulled out there today, Blake?!"I cornered Blake against the brick wall of the campus gymnasium, my hands gripping the collar of his athletic jacket so hard my knuckles turned white. The rain was pouring down around us, but I didn't care. My blood was boiling.Blake just laughed, casually pushing my hands off his jacket and smoothing down his shirt with a lazy, arrogant grin."Relax, Jax. I was just playing my part," Blake said smoothly, leaning against the wall. "To win your million-dollar bet and get that Ducati, I have to make her fall completely in love with me. And to do that, I needed to earn her absolute trust. Stepping in between you two in the library was the easiest way to make her think I'm her white knight.""I told you to break her heart, Reed, not steal my joy!" I snapped, my jaw locked tight as I glared at him. "I wanted to watch her kneel. I wanted to see her utterly humiliated on that floor for everyone to se
ARIA POV“Did she actually think a guy like Blake Reed would ever look at someone like her? What a desperate pig!"A sharp, cruel voice echoed across the crowded university hallway, shattering the last remaining pieces of my fragile confidence. The video playing on my phone screen wasn't just the clip of me on my knees in the library. Someone had maliciously edited it. Worse than that, they had warped it using obnoxious, humiliating video filters, adding giant cartoon clown tears to my face, sparkling gold coins raining down around me with every sob to mock my mother's marriage, and flashing text overlays calling me a “desperate gold-digger” and a “pathological slut trying to seduce Blake and cause a fight between two best friends.”The comments section was moving at a blinding, terrifying speed. Hundreds of students from across Crestwood University were tearing me apart piece by piece, accusing me of throwing myself at Blake just to climb social ladders."Look at her pretending she d
ARIA POV“Kneel down right now and apologize!" Jaxon's ruthless command echoed off the high ceiling of the library, sharp and cold as a blade.I stood frozen against the wooden bookshelf, my chest heaving in fast, shallow breaths. Dozens of students stood in a wide circle around us, their eyes glued to my trembling frame. Some were holding up their phones, recording, while others whispered and giggled behind their hands. The humiliation was so heavy, so thick, that it felt like an anchor pulling me straight down into the dirt.Kneel.My knees trembled violently. Tears of pure, agonizing shame spilled hot over my eyelashes, burning my cheeks. Every instinct inside me screamed at me to fight back, to throw my heavy textbooks at Jaxon's arrogant face, to scream until my lungs gave out.But then, sudden, painful memory flashes flooded my mind, shattering my courage.I could hear my mother’s harsh, shrill voice echoing in my head from years ago, cutting through my memory like glass: “You'r
Aria pov"Did... did the almighty Blake Reed just walk up to me?" I whispered under my breath, my hands trembling as I hugged my notebook tightly against my chest. My heart was doing violent backflips against my ribs. My cheeks felt like they were literally on fire, glowing a deep, unshakeable pink. I sat alone at the library table, staring at the empty chair across from me, completely unable to wipe the silly, giddy grin off my face."What on earth just happened?" I murmured to myself, leaning my hot forehead against the wooden table. "He walked up to the real me. Not the anonymous texter. Not a profile picture. He saw me sitting here, came over, and offered to tutor me!"It felt like a sweet, incredible dream. For months, I had been watching him from the top row of the ice rink, feeling completely invisible, convinced that a guy like Blake would never notice a girl like me. And now he noticed me. Oh my gosh!I took a few deep, shaky breaths, finally gathering my courage and my heavy
BLAKE POV“You've got to be kidding me," I breathed, my eyes wide as Jaxon threw back the heavy canvas sheet in the center of his private three-car garage.Sitting before us was the matte-black, custom 1969 vintage Ducati motorcycle. The polished chrome detail gleamed under the soft overhead lights, and the rich smell of leather, gasoline, and expensive polish filled the room. I had been begging Jaxon to sell me this exact bike since our freshman year, but the stubborn bastard had always refused, guarding it like a sacred family treasure.I looked from the motorcycle over to Jaxon, who was leaning casually against the hood of his sports car, sipping iced bourbon with a deadpan look on his face."I thought you were joking earlier, Jax," I said, a dry laugh escaping my throat. "You're really putting this on the line?""I never joke about something like this, Blake," Jaxon replied coldly, taking a slow sip of his drink. "Especially not with my precious bike."I stared at the sleek machin
