THE FORTRESS

“What the hell is going on here!?” Eric's shout crashed through the empty house as he stood halfway down the staircase, staring at the stripped rooms with disbelief twisting his face.

Amanda turned slowly from the doorway, her expression calm despite the accusation burning across his features. She folded her arms and met his stare without flinching. “I'm taking back what belongs to me.”

Eric stepped onto the bare floor, looking around as though the furniture might somehow reappear if he stared hard enough. His voice dropped dangerously. “You emptied the house?”

Amanda watched his eyes move from the missing sofas to the vanished television, refrigerator, appliances, electronics, and decorations. “The things I purchased are mine.”

His jaw tightened as realization finally replaced confusion. “You took the furniture, the appliances, the electronics—everything?”

Amanda's fingers curled lightly against her sleeve, but her voice remained steady. "What belongs to me, and what I no longer intend to leave behind.”

Eric gave a disbelieving laugh, though the tension around his mouth betrayed him. “So this is punishment? You’re angry, you strip the house, and then you expect everything to go back to normal? But how did you even pull this off in a short while?”

Amanda studied him for several seconds, remembering how easily she had once believed apologies. She smirked and said “You still think this is temporary.”

Before Eric could answer, the front door opened violently, and Katie entered with Susan beside her. Katie's pale face immediately hardened when she saw the empty room. “What did you do to this house?”

Amanda looked toward her without moving. “Exactly what you think I did.”

Katie's breathing quickened as she noticed the missing television and furniture, then the empty kitchen behind Amanda. Her voice cracked with disbelief. “Where is everything? Where are my things?”

Amanda's expression barely changed. “Your things?”

Katie's eyes flashed with anger. “The things in this house! The appliances, the furniture, everything!”

Amanda held her gaze, refusing to argue about possessions Katie had never purchased. “If you mean the things I bought, they're no longer here.”

Susan stepped forward, clutching her handbag tightly against her side. Her face carried more disappointment than anger. “Amanda, whatever happened between you and Eric, you shouldn't punish the whole family.”

Amanda felt the old guilt stir automatically, then pushed it down before it could control her. “I'm not punishing anyone. I'm simply stopping myself from being responsible for everyone.”

Katie's eyes reddened immediately. “You know Ivy is sick.”

Amanda's chest tightened at the child's name. She remembered holding Ivy in her first life, and remembered loving a child who had never understood the betrayal surrounding her. “I know.”

Katie swallowed hard, her voice becoming desperate. “She needs treatment. She needs medication. She needs money, Amanda.”

Amanda's heart ached despite everything she had learned. “I hope she gets the treatment she needs.”

Katie stared at her as though the answer was cruel. “That's all you have to say?”

Amanda lowered her gaze briefly before looking back at the woman who had helped destroy her first life. “I can care about Ivy without financing you.”

Susan's lips pressed into a thin line. “You always knew Katie was more vulnerable than you.”

Amanda almost laughed at the absurdity, but the sound never came. “And because I was stronger, you decided I should carry everyone forever?”

Susan looked away for a moment, unwilling to answer. Katie suddenly wiped her cheeks and turned toward Eric. “We need money now.”

Eric's face tightened as he remembered the accounts Amanda had already closed. “I don't have access to what she controlled.”

Katie stared at him in disbelief. “Then sell something.” Her gaze dropped to the designer bag hanging from her arm, and her fingers tightened around its strap. “I'll sell mine, I have to”

She cried walking away.

Amanda said nothing as Katie turned away, because sympathy and responsibility were no longer the same thing.

Hours later, Katie returned from the hospital with Susan, her expensive bag gone and exhaustion written across her face. She stopped outside Amanda's room and whispered bitterly, “The money paid for part of Ivy's treatment.”

Susan's voice trembled beside her. “But they said the delay caused complications.”

Katie's hands shook as she looked toward the closed bedroom door. “She's in a coma.”

Susan's eyes filled with tears. “The doctors don't know if she'll wake up.”

Katie's expression hardened as grief searched desperately for someone to blame. “Amanda could have paid. She had the money.”

Susan hesitated, then allowed her anger to overcome whatever doubt remained. “She knew Ivy needed help.”

Katie's voice dropped into something colder. “Then she wanted this, she's very cruel.”

Inside her room, Amanda heard every word through the partially open door. Her eyes closed briefly as pain moved through her chest. “Ivy didn't choose any of this.”

She opened her eyes and stared at the packed boxes surrounding her. “But I won't destroy myself trying to save people who destroyed me.”

Amanda had barely finished bathing when the glow of A.R.I.S. appeared across her vision, replacing the scattered calculations with a warning that made her hand stop moving.

{Survival Preparation Protocol Initiated.}

Amanda stared at the message, her brows drawing together.

{Primary Objective: Establish an independent survival base before catastrophic environmental disruption.}

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the desk as another line appeared beneath it.

{Required Preparation Categories: Food. Water. Power. Medical Supplies. Sanitation. Communication. Security. Shelter.}

Amanda slowly leaned back, absorbing the list.

“So you're telling me I need to prepare for everything?”

{Host: You are required to prepare for prolonged infrastructure failure, flooding, supply-chain disruption, contamination, power loss, and restricted external access.}

The words made Amanda's expression turn serious.

“How much time do I have?”

{Current Estimated Time Until Catastrophic Event: 28 Days.}

Amanda looked toward the window, then back at the system.

“Then I can't waste any more time.”

{Affirmative. Delay Will Reduce Survival Probability.}

That was all the encouragement she needed.

Amanda grabbed her phone and stood, already mentally reorganizing everything she had planned. “Fine. Food first.”

{Recommendation: Begin with durable food supplies. Prioritize grains, legumes, canned proteins, cooking essentials, dried vegetables, powdered milk, salt, sugar, oil, seeds, and long-term emergency rations.}

Amanda paused at the door.

“Seeds?”

{Affirmative. Sustainable Food Production Is Preferable To Indefinite Dependence On External Supply Chains.}

She stared at the message for another second before nodding. “You really are thinking about everything.”

{Negative. I Am Identifying Survival Requirements. Human Preparation Remains Necessary For Implementation.}

Amanda almost smiled at the blunt correction. “Right. You calculate. I act.” She immediately headed out.

---

The first grocery store employee stopped smiling when Amanda asked for every available carton of bottled water in the storage warehouse.

“Every carton?” the employee asked nervously, staring at the order sheet.

Amanda remained focused on her phone. “Yes. Every carton you can legally sell to me.”

The employee glanced at the quantity again. “Ma'am, that's an enormous amount of water.”

Amanda gave him a calm look. “I know.”

Another worker approached after hearing the conversation and quietly asked, “Are you opening a mini mart?”

Amanda almost laughed. “No.”

The worker looked even more confused. “Then why do you need this much?”

Amanda simply pointed toward the order sheet. “Because I need it to host a small celebration.”

By the time Amanda finished, she had purchased rice, flour, beans, canned meat, canned vegetables, dried food, cooking oil, salt, sugar, powdered milk, bottled water, and other long-term supplies. Her purchases became so large that employees began whispering among themselves.

“She must be starting a business.”

“Maybe she's supplying restaurants.”

“Then why is she buying medical supplies too?”

Amanda heard them but ignored every word. She had no reason to explain that she wasn't opening a business. She was preparing for the end of the world.

At the next supplier, the confusion became even greater.

Amanda ordered freezers, refrigeration units, generators, batteries, water pumps, filtration equipment, cooking appliances, emergency lighting, communication devices, and fuel-storage equipment.

The salesman stared at the order before slowly looking up.

“Ma'am, are you sure this is for one property?”

Amanda checked the quantities A.R.I.S. had calculated.

“Yes.”

He hesitated. “That's enough equipment for several properties.”

Amanda's expression remained composed. “Then consider me prepared for several problems.” The salesman didn't know how to respond to that. Neither did the employees watching from behind him.

Amanda signed the documents and walked away. For the first time since her rebirth, she wasn't buying things because someone expected her to provide for them.

She was buying because her life depended on it and she intended to make sure she was never helpless again.

After placing the orders, Amanda gave every supplier the delivery address and instructed them to send the supplies directly there. She also arranged separate delivery times to avoid drawing attention.

When Amanda returned to the house, the first trucks were already arriving according to schedule. Workers moved the sealed cartons inside, while the existing construction crew cleared storage rooms for the incoming supplies.

Amanda walked through the activity with her phone in hand, checking each invoice against the quantities A.R.I.S. had calculated. Nothing was being purchased randomly; every item had a specific purpose.

She watched another shipment being unloaded and quietly said, “This is only the beginning.”

Amanda's eyes moved toward the unfinished walls surrounding the property. Food and water could keep people alive, but they couldn't keep the danger out.

Her expression hardened as she tightened her grip on the phone. “What comes next?”

{Security And Structural Protection.}

Amanda looked toward those offloading the items.

“Then let's build something that can survive.”

{Preparation will continue until all identified survival requirements are satisfied.}

    Raymond crouched beside the unfinished foundation, pressing his palm against the reinforced concrete while Amanda watched him study every crack, joint, and drainage channel with unsettling concentration.“Who designed this section?” he asked, tracing a narrow line where two surfaces met. Amanda folded her arms, watching his expression tighten.“The construction team. They said reinforcement would be enough.”Raymond looked up, his gaze steady. “It won’t be, not if water carries debris at the speed you’re expecting.” Amanda felt a cold thread move through her stomach.“What do you suggest?” she asked, stepping closer to the foundation. Raymond rose, brushing dust from his hands before pointing toward the slope.“We raise this section, reinforce the lower walls, and redirect the drainage away from the main structure.” His tone stayed calm, but his certainty made Amanda listen.“You’re saying the elevation alone isn’t enough.”“I’m saying water doesn’t care how expensive your land is.” A
