The Name She Almost Remembered

“She's refusing to pay Ivy's hospital bills, yet she's buying enough food and equipment to supply a small city!” Katie slammed her phone onto the table, anger shaking through every word.

Susan stared at her, equally stunned. “Are you sure those purchases are hers?”

Katie pulled up the transaction records, her eyes burning with resentment. “They're under Amanda's name. Water, generators, freezers, construction materials, everything.”

Eric stood near the window, studying the information in silence. His expression had lost its earlier arrogance. “How much has she spent?”

Katie gave a bitter laugh. “Enough to make me wonder what she's planning.”

Susan tightened her fingers around her handbag. “Maybe she's trying to frighten us into begging her.”

Katie's face twisted. “Then why is she building somewhere else?”

Eric finally turned toward them, suspicion sharpening his voice. “That's what I want to know.”

Katie leaned forward, lowering her voice as though sharing something dangerous. “We need to find out where she's sending everything.”

Eric's eyes narrowed. “I'll handle it.”

Susan immediately shook her head. “Don't confront her yet. If she's hiding something, confronting her will only make her careful.”

Katie looked toward the empty hallway, resentment hardening her expression. “Then we'll find out without asking her.”

Amanda knew nothing about their decision because she was already standing on the land she had purchased, staring across the wide property with a strange mixture of relief and urgency.

The land sat considerably higher than the surrounding districts, far from the low coastal basin that would become dangerously vulnerable during the coming tsunami. Amanda looked toward the distant city and whispered, “This is where I build.”

{Primary shelter location confirmed.}

Amanda glanced toward the system. “Why this place?”

{Elevation is significantly higher than surrounding terrain. Natural drainage channels are present. Flood exposure is reduced compared with the original residence.}

Amanda walked several steps forward, studying the slope and surrounding terrain. “So the water won't reach this place?”

{Correction: Reduced exposure does not mean immunity. Extreme flooding may still cause secondary threats.}

Amanda nodded slowly. “That means I can't treat the elevation as protection by itself.”

{Correct. Structural reinforcement remains necessary.}

Amanda looked across the property again, already seeing walls, storage rooms, water tanks, greenhouses, and a secure entrance where there was currently only open land. “Then I'll make the land safer.”

The first challenge was turning ownership into control. Amanda had deliberately purchased the property through a private holding structure and completed the necessary transfers before beginning major deliveries. She had chosen this method because her family already had access to too much information about her finances.

A lawyer reviewing the final documents frowned slightly. “You're purchasing this property without intending to develop it normally?”

Amanda calmly closed the folder. “I'm developing it privately.”

The lawyer studied her for another moment. “It's an unusual amount of land for a private residence.”

Amanda's expression remained unreadable. “I have unusual plans.” He carefully gathered the documents. “As long as the paperwork is complete, the property is yours.”

Amanda nodded once. “That's all I need.” She left with the documents secured, knowing the most important part was no longer the purchase.

It was making sure nobody discovered what she intended to build there. Back at the property, Amanda asked A.R.I.S. and waited.

“What should I secure first?”

{Perimeter control.}

Amanda looked toward the open boundary.

“Walls?”

{Access points, perimeter barriers, surveillance, controlled entry, emergency exits, and protected utility systems.}

Amanda considered the list before reaching for her phone. “Then I need people who are specialists and understand construction.”

She began searching for contractors, structural engineers, security specialists, electricians, water-system technicians, and workers capable of handling accelerated construction but one problem appeared immediately. The strongest candidates were already committed to other projects.

Amanda frowned at the list. “I need someone who can work under pressure.”

{Search criteria expanded.}

Amanda scanned the revised candidates until three names remained. One had exceptional engineering credentials.

Another had extensive disaster-response experience. The third combined structural expertise with independent infrastructure experience and emergency construction capability.

Amanda's eyes stopped. “Raymond.” The name stirred something inside her, a memory she couldn't quite catch. Before she could investigate it, her phone rang.

The construction manager sounded frustrated. “Amanda, we need to discuss the foundation.”

She straightened immediately. “What's wrong?”

His voice carried concern. “The original design won't handle the conditions you've described. The ground needs reinforcement, and the drainage has to be redesigned.”

Amanda's eyes narrowed. “Can your team fix it?” There was a pause. “We can start, but we need a specialist.”

Amanda looked toward the unfinished structures. “Find me the best candidates you have.” The manager hesitated. “We already did.”

Amanda's attention sharpened. “And?” He answered carefully. “There are three. The third is probably the strongest fit.”

Amanda looked down at the name already glowing on her screen. “Raymond?”

The manager sounded surprised. “You know him?” Amanda's fingers tightened around the phone. “I don't know yet.”

Across the city, Eric stared at the address his private investigator had uncovered, suspicion tightening his face. Amanda was building elsewhere, and the discovery unsettled him more than he wanted to admit. The uncertainty bothered him.

“She’s building there?” Eric asked, gripping the report while his eyes remained fixed on the unfamiliar address. The investigator nodded carefully, sensing his growing irritation. The answer mattered more than he wanted to admit.

“Yes. Construction has already started,” the investigator replied. Eric’s jaw tightened as he scanned photographs showing trucks, workers, and materials entering the property. “What kind of construction?” he demanded. He hated not knowing what she was planning.

The investigator hesitated before answering, “We haven’t determined that yet.” Eric’s fingers tightened around the report. “Then determine it. I want to know what she’s building, who she hired, and how much she’s spending.”

Katie stepped forward, resentment sharpening her face. “Where exactly is she building?” she demanded. Eric turned toward her suspiciously. “Why do you care?” His warning tone only made her expression harder. Katie's eyes narrowed with suspicion.

“Because if she’s spending that much money, I want to know what it is,” Katie answered. Susan joined them. “And if Amanda has enough money to build another property, then she has enough money to help Ivy.” Susan looked exhausted and desperate.

Eric looked away, unable to answer. Katie noticed his silence and seized it. “She wants us to suffer while she builds a new life for herself.” Susan’s face tightened. “Amanda has changed.” Eric's silence only deepened their frustration.

Katie stared toward the door, refusing to accept that possibility. “No. She’s always been selfish. We just never noticed.” Her words sounded convincing, even as resentment twisted beneath them. Katie needed someone to blame.

Meanwhile, Amanda stood inside the half-finished fortress, studying three specialist profiles. She compared experience, availability, emergency projects, and practical skills rather than choosing someone simply because their credentials looked impressive. She refused to waste time.

“Show me the strongest structural candidate,” Amanda said, studying the profiles. A.R.I.S. highlighted the third candidate, whose experience included structural work, independent infrastructure, and emergency construction. She needed practical expertise.

{Recommendation: Contact Candidate Three Immediately.} Amanda stared at the name beneath the photograph. “Raymond?” Something inside her shifted, stirring memories she had forgotten for years. The name pulled at something forgotten.

She remembered teenage Raymond lingering nearby after school, carrying her books, walking beside her, and finding excuses to stay longer whenever she spoke. Katie had always noticed his attention and never hid her jealousy. The memories are returning now.

Amanda had never understood Katie’s jealousy then. Raymond had never confessed, but she remembered his shy smiles, awkward pauses, and the way his eyes lingered whenever he thought she wasn’t looking. She remembered his quiet affection..

Rather than call him immediately, Amanda arranged a face-to-face meeting at the construction site. Hours later, a dark vehicle stopped outside. Raymond stepped out, older, broader, and composed, but unmistakable. She had never understood it then.

He stopped when he saw her, surprise briefly breaking through his controlled expression. “Amanda?” His voice softened. Her breath caught. “Raymond?” Suddenly, forgotten memories returned with startling clarity. Now those memories felt strangely vivid.

She remembered the boy who had quietly fallen for her, never demanding her attention, only finding small reasons to remain near her. Raymond smiled faintly. “I recognized you immediately.” She remembered his quiet affection.

Amanda’s heartbeat shifted, but she turned toward the unfinished fortress. “I need someone who can help me build this properly.” Raymond followed her gaze, professionalism returning. “Then show me everything.”

    “Wait.”Everyone turned toward him.“What now?” Butcher demanded.Ghost looked at the bags, then toward the fortress. Rain hammered the vehicle’s roof.“I just remembered something. The man who gave us this job told us to destroy some of her things, didn't he?”Darius frowned. “What are you talking about?”“We were supposed to steal what we could and damage the property. We took the supplies, but barely touched anything else.”“Damn it,” Butcher muttered. “He's right.”Viper looked through the windshield. “We've ransacked the place and taken major supplies. Isn't that enough?”“No,” Darius said. “If our employer wanted us to steal a few boxes, he could have sent anybody. He paid us to make a mess, too.”Tank glanced at the bags. “So we're going back?”“We finish the job, then we leave.”Viper sighed and turned the vehicle around.When they reached the fortress again, the rain had grown heavier. Wind drove water across the grounds, and the gate swung on its damaged hinges with a deep m

    Nobody laughed this time. Darius looked at the shelves again. The joke had touched something he couldn't quite explain. There was too much food, too much water, and too much medicine. Amanda had even stored fuel and equipment for emergencies.He remembered seeing her being carried to the car. Whatever was happening to that woman, he thinks she had been preparing for something long before tonight but that wasn't his concern.He had been paid to get inside and take what he could. He wasn't going to lose his chance because he suddenly wanted to understand a stranger's decisions.“Ghost, pack those tablets but leave the unimportant ones behind.”Ghost looked at him. “You really want to leave her supplies?”“I want us to be swift and leave before someone catches us. Now move.”They filled their bags and carried them toward the hallway. Butcher disappeared into the medical room, where he found more equipment arranged along the walls.He stopped in the doorway, staring. “Darius! Come and se

    Raymond slammed the car into gear and pulled away from Amanda's fortress. The tires skidded across the wet gravel before catching the road, and he tightened his grip on the steering wheel as Amanda cried out beside him.“I'm here, Amanda. Just hold on.”She had her eyes squeezed shut, one hand pressed against her stomach. Her face had lost its colour, and every few seconds, a small, broken sound escaped her lips.“It hurts so bad please hurry,” she whimpered.“We're going straight to the hospital.”He glanced at her again, fighting the urge to look away from the road for too long. He had never seen Amanda like this. She was usually the woman who had an answer for everything, the woman who could look him in the eye even when the whole world seemed determined to bring her down.Now she could barely speak.“Raymond?” She spoke quietly.“I'm listening.”“Don't let anything happen to me please.”His throat tightened. “Nothing is going to happen to you. We're getting you help.”He wanted to

    Amanda stood up from the couch to get some water. That was all. She walked into the kitchen, took a glass from the shelf, and filled it at the tap.She was halfway through the first sip when the pain hit.It wasn't a cramp. A cramp she could have waited out. This was a hot, twisting knife low in her belly, and it made her fingers go loose. The glass slipped and exploded against the tiles."No." Her hand flew to her stomach. "No, no, no."{Warning: Elevated stress levels detected. Recommend immediate medical attention.}Her knees gave out. She caught the edge of the counter and hung there, knuckles white, water and glass all around her bare feet."Something's wrong," she said, and her voice came out thin and cracked. "Something is really wrong."She made it to the living room one wall at a time. The couch was only ten steps away, but it felt like a mile. She fell onto the cushions and the pain followed her down. Then it got worse.She folded in half. A scream ripped out of her before s

    The coffee had gone cold hours ago.Amanda didn't notice. She was staring at the lists—the same lists she had checked three times already—and wondering if she was doing enough. Food supplies. Water purification tablets. Medical equipment. Batteries. Fuel. Seeds. Tools. Weapons. Every item had been calculated, cross-referenced, and verified. Every item had a purpose. She had been preparing for weeks. But something still felt incomplete. She reached for her phone and scrolled through her banking application. The numbers made her pause. She had spent a significant amount of her savings on the fortress, the supplies, the medical equipment but she still had money. More than enough. Money wouldn't matter after the apocalypse. She knew that. But some part of her still hesitated to spend it all. {Observation: Host is hesitating.} A.R.I.S. spoke quietly in her mind. Amanda didn't look up from her phone. "I'm thinking." {Observation: Host has sufficient resources. Hesitation is unneces

    "I'm sorry, Mr. Raymond. The footage is gone."Detective Hale's voice was apologetic. Raymond stared at the phone in his hand. His fingers tightened around the device until his knuckles turned white."What do you mean, gone?" The words didn't make sense.Raymond had been waiting for this call for days. The warrant had been approved. The police had the legal authority to obtain the footage. Everything was supposed to be straightforward."Gone," he repeated. "How can it be gone?"Detective Hale sighed on the other end of the line."We served the warrant this morning. When our officers arrived at the Starlight Hotel, the manager—a man named Marcos—informed them that the recordings had been erased due to a technical malfunction."Raymond felt his chest tighten. "A malfunction?""That's what he said. According to him, the system experienced some kind of failure two days ago. All footage from the relevant period was lost."Raymond closed his eyes.He was sitting in his car outside Meridian
