RICHARD’S POV

“Alex is awake,” B said alarmingly, rising from her seat to head for the stairs when I stopped her.

“No…don’t worry, I will go get him.”

“Don’t bother,” she insisted. “Finish your talk with her, I will go…”

“No, I’m serious,” I pushed on, cutting her short. “I put him to bed, let me get him out of bed.”

B narrowed her eyes and gave me a brief hard stare as if to see through me for a moment before finally sighing in defeat and agreeing.

“Fine,” she said, walking back to her seat. “I guess Mr. Sam was right when he said you’d make a great dad.”

I smiled in pride and bowed slightly as she said that. “Thank you.”

Alex’s cry intensified from upstairs, prompting me to act fast. Quickly, I turned to Heather.

“I will be right back. Just give me a minute or two. I promised to explain everything to you once I get back,” I said it almost like it was an apology and she nodded in understanding.
