The morning air was unusually cold, making me regret my choice of a large T‑shirt and flimsy shorts. I rubbed my shoulders, trying to bring some warmth back into them as I made my way to the kitchen. Velma was already there, busying herself with the coffee machine.

“Good morning, Velma. Is that for me?” I asked with a smile.

Velma and I had settled into a new rhythm over the past few weeks, one that felt different from the awkward dynamic we’d had when I first arrived. For one, she no longer woke me up at 8 a.m. I think she finally understood that I cherished my morning lie‑ins. And then there was the coffee , the cup she always made for me when I came downstairs, warm and creamy, just the way I liked it.

Of course, the fruit bowl never left my breakfast routine. Somehow, I appreciated it now more than before. It had become our little ritual, something small yet comforting to look forward to each morning.

“No ma’am, this is for Mr. Sinclair. I’ll make yours right after.”

I frowned, co

The email came through around 8 A.M that morning. I didn’t see it right away, I’d slept in, waking at half past nine and only bothered to check my inbox around eleven. It was short but held a lot. From: darrenvancarten@gmail.com Elena, Meet me at my office today at 12pm today. We need to have a chat. It’s about your mum. Sincerely, Your Father. The words carried the typical monotone dryness of my dad. Sincerely, your father? Yes, that was Darren Vancarten through and through. No warmth, no softenss, just a stiff formality that made even family conversations sound like business. But what made me pause wasn’t his tone. It was the part about my mother. It’s about your mum.Was she okay? Had something happened?Panic rose in my chest. Before I knew it, I was on the road, following the voice of the GPS as I navigated the busy road.No matter how many times I tried to deny it, my mother held a special place in my heart. She was infuriating, yes, we disagreed on the smallest things and

“Evageline, if you want to be the big bad wolf, you’ll have to blow at the houses as hard as you can.”The little girl tilted her head, her lips curling into a pout. “Can’t I just point my finger at the house and then it falls down?”I blinked at her. She was definitely not making my job any easier today. "You’re a wolf, not a little girl with magical powers—”“Then let me be a wolf with magical powers.” She batted her lashes coyly and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.“Everyone take five.” I sighed, waving the kids off for a break. My patience was already thinning and Evageline’s stubbornness wasn’t helping. I walked over to the porch and plopped down beside Deb, who was sitting comfortably with an amused grin on her face.“Seems like that went well.” she teased.I groaned, shaking my head. “The opposite, actually. Evageline’s giving me a hard time. Remind me again why I agreed to let her be the wolf?”Deb chuckled. “Because she would’ve screamed your head off if you gave that part t

I let out a small yawn as I slowly got off the couch, my body still tired from my restless night as I padded across the floor toward the door. I pried the door open and before I could even let out a 'hello' I was engulfed in a tight hug. Kaylor’s blonde curls tickled my face, her arms wrapping around me in a way that felt both comforting and suffocating.“I’m so sorry.” she whispered, her voice muffled against my shoulder. My brows knitted together in confusion as I tried to wriggle free from her grip. “Sorry? For what?”“For not coming over yesterday. I feel so bad.”Ah. That. The memory of yesterday came back to me slowly. After the whole Nathaniel fiasco, I’d called Kaylor in tears, telling her that I needed to see her. But she had a family dinner she couldn’t get out of, leaving me to deal with my problem alone. So I did the only thing that made sense at the time: I grabbed my still-unpacked suitcase and leftNathaniel's to my own apartment. The fatigue from the flight that day had

I’d said not more than five words to Nathaniel on our flight and on the drive back home. At the airport, he asked if I wanted to pick up any New York souvenirs from the gift shop. I said no. When we boarded the plane, he asked if I wanted a champagne flute. Again, I said no.Five hours later, when we touched down in San Francisco, he asked if I wanted to grab food before heading home. And of course, you guessed it, I said no.We were finally on our way home and I still hadn’t strung together a full sentence for him. I kept myself busy, occasionally staring out the window or checking my phone to see if Kaylor had texted. I avoided eye contact like it was poison. I couldn’t tell if Nathaniel couldn't take a hint that I was giving him the silent treatment or if he was simply that oblivious.“Is the AC too much for you? Should I tell the driver to—”“No.” My tone was clipped, sharp and I didn’t bother sparing him a glance.Thankfully, he shut up after that and the rest of the ride was do

My eyes fluttered open slowly, adjusting to the dim light that filtered through the curtains of our hotel room. The soft hum of the city outside was muffled, leaving only the quiet rhythm of breathing beside me. My gaze landed on Nathaniel’s sleeping face. For the past mornings we’d shared this room, I had always woken to find him already showered, dressed and ready for whatever business he had to do for the day. But today was different. Today, he was still here, lying beside me, his chest rising and falling in steady rhythm.I studied him in silence, taking in every detail. His features were relaxed, softened by sleep. He looked so peaceful, boyish even, as though the weight of his world and all his workload had finally loosened its grip for a few hours. As if on cue, his own eyes fluttered open. He caught me staring, but I didn’t bother to look away. There was no point pretending otherwise. Instead, I offered him a small smile and he returned it with one of his own.“Hey.”“Hey.” Hi

The first thing I noticed when we arrived at the venue was the paparazzi. I had never expected so many reporters, their cameras fashing in every direction, desperate for the perfect shot to feed their publishers.I glanced at Nathaniel nervously. He gave me an assuring smile as he leaned forward to whisper something to the driver before stepping out of the car. Moments later, he opened my door and held his hand out for mine. I took in a deep breath as I placed my palm gently in his and let him help me out.As if on cue, the flashes exploded everywhere. I had to blink several times to clear my vision. Nathaniel tightened his grip on my hand as he guided me through the throngs of cameramen pushing in around us.Questions flew in with the flashes: Is this the new Mrs. Sinclair? Who is your designer? What are your expectations for tonight? Is it true your marriage was arranged? At that last question, Nathaniel’s hand closed more firmly around mine as he pulled us forward quickly. A man dr
