Chapter 2

Author: Ferrari
A deathly silence fell over the altar.

Alonso silently stood rooted to the ground, his eyes filled with pain and struggle.

I could hear the guests gasping in their seats in the distance.

Silver daggers were every werewolf's biggest fear. If one were to be injured by a silver dagger, their wound would never heal, and their wolf may even suffer lifelong disabilities.

When I got pierced in the stomach by the silver dagger, I hadn't just lost the ability to transform forever. I had also lost the ability to carry pups anymore. And in the wolf kingdom, an Omega with such a disability was as good as trash.

"That had been an accident," Alonso finally said, finding his voice, yet it was so weak that whatever he said seemed just like an excuse.

"You got hurt because you were saving my life. I know that. I always knew that…"

"So what if you knew that?" I asked, laughing in desolation. "You then bred another she-wolf, and you're now planning to leave me during the marking ceremony I had been waiting for ten years?

"What kind of wolf do you think I am, Alonso? Am I just a prostitute at your beck and call?"

Alonso took a step backward as if he couldn't withstand the weight of my words anymore.

"I… I will make it up to you," he said with much difficulty. "When Hailey's condition stabilizes, we'll pick another date—"

"There won't be a next time," I said with a shake of my head, tears blurring my vision. "Just leave, Alonso Austin. But remember the choice that you made today."

Alonso only froze in his spot for a while. Then, he turned and left after saying in a hurried tone, "I'll make it up to you."

He never looked back after that, leaving me alone in the center of the altar as I looked up toward the moonlight.

"Did you hear that, Moon Goddess?" I asked in my head. "The oathbreaker has appeared."

Thus, the curse would descend very soon.

A sharp, excruciating pain suddenly burst forth in my heart, as if something was tearing me apart from within. I looked down and saw fine, silver patterns beginning to appear beneath the skin on my hands.

This was the sign of my wolf spirit declining—the Wilting Wolf syndrome.

My vision began to blur, and I could hear cries of alarm ringing in my ears. Someone kept calling out to me.

When I finally fell to the ground, the last thing I saw was the panicked eyes of my best friend, Lucy Hallworth, the healer of the pack.

Three days later, I finally woke up in the infirmary.

"You're up?"

Lucy's voice floated into my ears from my side. I wanted to speak, but I ended up violently coughing my lungs out instead.

Something warm flowed out from the corners of my mouth, and I wiped it away with my hands, noticing the silverish liquid staining my fingertips.

When the Moon Goddess cursed a werewolf, their blood would discolor, turning from red to this eerie, mysterious silver color.

"Don't move," Lucy said, pushing me back onto the bed. Her fingertips were icy-cold as she continued, "Your wolf is wilting. The curse of the Moon Goddess has begun."

I stared up at the ceiling in a daze. A long while later, I asked quietly, "How much longer?"

"If you don't get triggered again, you might live for another three more months," Lucy answered in a low voice that I could barely catch. "However, every time his heart beats for the other Omega when he gets close to her, your wolf will decline even more rapidly.

"Grace, you must leave him."

I had to leave him, huh?

However, it was easier said than done.

I had spent ten years trying to learn that lesson, but I still failed in the end.

"It's too late," I said, hearing my hollow voice as I spoke. "From the moment he turned his back on me at the altar, everything's already too late."

The door to the ward was pushed open just then.

Alonso stood at the door, looking like a terrible mess.

There were dark eye-circles under his eyes, his clothes were disheveled, and there was a light dusting of snow on his clothes and body that hadn't yet melted.

What disappointed me the most was the lingering, cloying scent of Hailey's pheromones on his body that was seemingly declaring ownership of him under my nose.

"Grace…"

He approached me and reached out, wanting to caress my face. However, he froze when he saw the silver patterns on my arms.

"What is this?"

I pulled down my sleeves to cover up the ugly silver patterns. "It's got nothing to do with you."

"How could it not have anything to do with me?" Alonso demanded as he raised his voice at me. "You are my fated mate!"

"I used to be your fated mate," I said, correcting him as I struggled to keep my voice calm. "But from the moment you chose her, I was no longer your fated mate anymore."

Alonso's expression twisted for a second as if someone had just punched him in the face. He inhaled deeply and forced himself and his raging pheromones to calm down.

"I had no choice! She was standing on the cliff, and she was still carrying my pup! That's also another life—"

"It's fake."

Alonso and Lucy had the most intense fight of their lives after my passing, and it was all because of my belongings. He wanted to take them with him, but Lucy wouldn't agree.Alonso was furious."Lucy Hallworth! Do you know who you are talking to?""Who am I talking to? Of course! You're the piece of trash who chose to believe his mistress and caused the death of his own fated mate!""You! Grace was my fated mate!""Then answer me—where were you when Grace was at the marking ceremony? Where were you when Grace's wolf began wilting in the infirmary? And who was it that called Grace an evil wolf when she was at her most vulnerable at home?"Alonso was rendered completely speechless.A long while later, he finally lowered his head and clenched his fists.Lucy was so angry that she was shaking all over. She averted her gaze and refused to look at him. Finally, Alonso spoke in a hoarse, humble voice."I only want one thing from her. Can I?"Lucy sneered coldly and said, "Sorry,

Hailey's smile froze on her face."I don't forgive you," I said, making sure every word was clear. "And I will not plead with the council to spare your life.""Grace—""You took advantage of my kindness and hurt everything and everyone I cared about," I continued in a calm yet steady voice."You spread lies about me to ruin my reputation. You faked your pregnancy to destroy my bond. You also accelerated my death."Hailey Griffin, you have never once respected me. You only used me as a stepping stone to get to where you wanted to be."I then lifted my eyes and looked at the chief Elder, saying, "I will respect the decision of the Elders' Council. No matter what the outcome, I will accept it."Hailey's face changed completely. She scrambled up to her feet and screamed at me while pointing in my face, "You hypocritical bitch! What are you pretending to be so high-and-mighty for? You're nothing but an incapacitated, dying bitch—""Shut up!" Alonso thundered coldly. "Take her away!"

Time seemed to come to a standstill.Alonso sat there, completely stunned.A long while later, he finally found his voice again."So… It was because of me… It was because of my oath back then that made you suffer like this now?""Not entirely," I said quietly. "I chose to bear the consequences in your place.""But I never knew…"Alonso grabbed at his hair and dug his nails into his scalp. "I never knew that it would be taken as a real oath… I didn't know about the curse… Grace, I really thought that it was just some sort of sweet talk…""It doesn't matter if it was an oath or just sweet talk," I said, looking at him without any resentment in my eyes. "But if you said it, then someone had to be held accountable for it. Alonso, you broke your oath, and I bore the consequences. It's that simple."Alonso broke down in tears."It was me… I was the one who killed you," he said, repeating it endlessly. "I was the one who killed you, Grace…"I didn't comfort him.Instead, I just sil

"It's entirely up to me to decide if she's worthy of that position or not! Also, I have never planned to abandon her!" Alonso said, suddenly raising his voice in anger. "You were the one who used despicable methods for your own selfish reasons!""It doesn't matter what methods I used as long as the outcome is like this!" Hailey roared back angrily. "If you hadn't suddenly decided to investigate, I would have already been the pack's future Luna! Grace should have died a long time ago! She's nothing but an eyesore—"A resounding slap echoed down the corridor. It was immediately followed by Hailey's shrill scream."You hit me! Alonso Austin, you never even dared to say a harsh word to me before! How could you hit me just because of that stupid bitch!""Shut up," Alonso growled, his voice as cold as ice. "I never knew that you were a liar in the past. Also… You have no right to even speak of her name."There was then the sound of more struggling and dragging, and Hailey's voice becam

My condition deteriorated rapidly after Alonso left with Hailey. When Lucy sent me back to the infirmary again, the main healer's face was terribly grave. He checked the silver patterns on my arms and drew some of my blood for a series of tests."Her wolf is wilting too quickly. She's in the third stage now," the healer told Lucy in a low voice. "At most… she has about a month left."One month left.I lay on the bed and listened to the sound of falling snow outside the window, feeling oddly calm about everything."Grace, I did as you said and investigated the matter. Hailey isn't carrying any pups at all," Lucy said, showing me a test report. "Should I deliver this to Alonso?"I shook my head and said, "It doesn't matter anymore. Burn it."The sooner things ended, the sooner I would be free of all suffering. To my surprise, Alonso came alone to the infirmary three days later in the dead of the night. If I weren't so familiar with his scent, I wouldn't even have noticed that he

Alonso went silent."I don't know," he finally said, releasing my wrist and sounding exhausted. "I don't know what to believe anymore, Grace. I'm very familiar with your body. The video… Those scenes…""So, you don't believe me," I said lightly, like it was a statement of fact."How am I supposed to believe you?" he suddenly exploded and roared in my face. "That birthmark! The entire Northside Kingdom recognizes it! How do you expect me to tell the pack that it wasn't you?"Alonso kept growling in my face like a maniac, but all I wanted to do was laugh. After all, he was already together with another she-wolf, and yet, he still got angry and jealous over a video that couldn't even be proven to be real or authentic. At that moment, there was a light knock on the door.Hailey appeared with an elegant food container in her hands. She stood outside the door and smiled gently at us."Sorry, but the door wasn't closed. I didn't mean to eavesdrop."Her cheeks were glowing, and her ey
