VOSS ESTATE

Morning seeped into the room like a rumor—gray, watchful and cold.

Amara woke, her mind replaying last night’s auction like a film she refused to pause. The anonymous note still pulsed against her ribs. Get along just fine.

Kaylee was already at the breakfast table, laptop open, hair pulled into a knife-sharp bun. Two mugs of coffee steamed between them.

“Found something,” Kaylee said without preamble. “On the lawyer who managed the Monroe family trust back when they passed.”

Amara straightened. “The one who helped them?”

She didn't have any emotional attachment to her parents, she didn't even know them before their death, she wasn't affected when they were brought up.

“Name’s Roderick Vale. Partner at Dempsey & Co.” Kaylee rotated the screen. “Divorce filings sealed, gambling debts quieted by payouts. And—” she tapped another tab—“an offshore account linked to Cade Development. Cayman Islands.”

“Bought,” Amara murmured.

“Rented. He still practices. Still travels to Geneva twice a year. His phone records show late-night calls to an unlisted New York burner. Guess whose name hovers around those same calls.”

Amara’s pulse tightened. “Ethan.”

Kaylee nodded. “I sent Vale a little hello—just enough to shake the tree.”

Amara arched a brow. “Define hello.”

“Encrypted text. No signature. We know what you buried. Let’s see if he twitches.”

Amara allowed herself the smallest smile. “Nicely played.”

Kaylee’s phone buzzed. “And look at that. He twitched. Three calls to Cade’s private line since dawn.”

The first blade, drawn.

--------------

Late morning sunlight turned Los Angeles into a mirage when Sienna Cade texted.

> Brunch and a tour? Let me show you why people stay in California.

Amara studied the message. Sienna’s friendliness still felt like silk hiding barbed wire.

She wondered how she didn't notice the last time.

How Sienna was sweet—too sweet —she was actually pushing her towards Ethan.

She said they'd make a great couple.

How did she even allow herself to be fooled?

She was naive as Elara—a mistake she wouldn't make as Amara

“Meeting her is a risk,” Kaylee warned, reading over her shoulder.

“That’s why I do it,” Amara replied. “Every move is information.”

----------

The restaurant Sienna chose clung to a hillside above the Pacific, glass walls giving the illusion of floating over water. Sienna arrived exactly on time, wrapped in ivory linen, a diamond at her throat catching every shaft of sun.

“You look too perfect for a city still waking,” Amara said, accepting the air-kiss Sienna offered.

“California rewards early risers,” Sienna replied with a smile that never touched her eyes. “Shall we?”

They walked the coastal path after brunch, ocean wind tangling their hair. Sienna narrated neighborhoods, art districts, charity galas. Amara listened, cataloging every inflection.

Halfway down the trail, Sienna’s phone vibrated. She glanced at the screen, thumb hovering, a flicker of something—panic?—before she tucked it away.

“Everything alright?” Amara asked lightly.

Sienna’s smile reappeared too quickly. “Ethan. He can’t help himself. Business.”

But the lie shone like glass in the sun. The vibration had been too brief for a text thread. And the way Sienna’s fingers tightened around the phone—a tell.

Another buzz. Sienna’s jaw clenched before she silenced it.

“Persistent,” Amara said. “Your husband likes to keep close tabs.”

“Married life,” Sienna replied, but her voice carried a thin tremor.

Yeah Sure 'married life' Amara thought.

Amara let silence stretch, the ocean’s roar filling the gap. Whoever messaged Sienna wasn’t Ethan. And Sienna knew Amara knew.

Interesting.

------------

Back at the penthouse, Kaylee awaited with updates.

“Vale’s in full panic,” she reported. “Booked a last-minute flight to New York. Cade’s private jet filed a matching plan. They’re scrambling.”

Amara set her clutch down, mind racing. “And Sienna?”

“Tracked her phone to a private number out of Nevada. Not Ethan’s network. Different encryption—high-end, military-grade.”

“So Sienna’s hiding something from her own husband,” Amara murmured. “And someone out there wants her rattled.”

Kaylee tilted her head. “Could be the same someone who sent you that note.”

Amara looked out at the darkening horizon. The Pacific bled copper under the setting sun.

The game was widening—new players, new motives.

“We keep pressing,” she said. “Let Vale run scared. Let Sienna twist. The more they move, the clearer the map becomes.”

Kaylee’s lips curved in a rare, fierce smile. “And Ethan?”

Amara felt the weight of last night’s stare, the challenge in his eyes.

“Ethan will come to me,” she said. “Men like him always do.”

She knew, she recognized the pattern.

Still she felt dumb, how she didn't notice the first time.

She was naive, a lost little orphan out of the system.

She remembered the first time she met Ethan Cade and Sienna.

It was in college.

Everyone basically ignored her existence and went on with their lives.

But Sienna though? She was the first to approach her with some kind of huge smile and warmness she sought.

Elara was a recluse, she didn't have any friends, it never quite phased her—not really—she didn't crave for companionship until they came into her life.

She shook the thought away.

It was all in the past for a reason.

Outside, the ocean wind rose, carrying the scent of salt and storms—an omen, or a promise.

The first blade had been drawn. The next would find its mark.

THE CLUB The city had changed its skin by nightfall. The rain-washed streets shimmered under neon and deceit. Music spilled out from the heart of the district—low, throbbing, human. Haven, the club Sienna had chosen, was carved out of glass and shadow, the kind of place where power came to dance with denial. Amara arrived at nine on the dot. Her driver opened the door, and the wind caught her coat like it wanted to hold her. She stepped out, a symphony of restraint—black silk and sharp heels, and that quiet confidence that made men shift without knowing why. Inside, the air was warm, rich with perfume and false laughter. She spotted Sienna almost instantly. Perched on a high stool near the bar, Sienna looked like a painting come to life—hair perfectly curled, smile perfectly placed. But her eyes flicked toward the entrance too quickly. Expectant. Nervous. She’d rehearsed this moment. Amara’s lips curved. Of course she had. “Amara!” Sienna’s voice rose above the music, too bright

  • Ashes Don't Bleed   Chapter Twenty-Two: An Invite

VOSS ESTATE The storm had spent itself by dawn, leaving behind a city scrubbed clean but trembling beneath the weight of what it didn’t yet know. The windows of the Voss estate reflected a faint blush of morning, and inside, Amara still hadn’t slept. The photos glowed faintly on the screen — evidence, leverage, a story waiting to be told. Sienna Cade, the perfect wife, meeting a man her husband had erased from the city. A man who, once upon a time, had been the missing piece between all three of them. Kaylee stepped into the study quietly, a cup of coffee in hand. She didn’t say anything at first; she just watched Amara, who hadn’t moved in hours. “You’re still staring at them,” Kaylee murmured. “I’m memorizing them.” “Every detail?” “Every weakness,” Amara corrected, her tone smooth. “Sienna hides behind charm, but she’s careless when she feels safe. Ethan hides behind power, but he mistakes control for foresight. Daniel? He hides because he’s learned the cost of being seen.”

  • Ashes Don't Bleed   Chapter Twenty One: The Night Of Reckoning

VOSS ESTATE The night hummed with static, rain whispering against the glass in a slow, rhythmic pulse. The world outside was nothing but dark sea and the gleam of lightning cutting through the fog. Inside, the estate was quiet — too quiet — except for the faint crackle of Kaylee’s typing and the low, predatory patience of Amara watching her. The listening devices the chef had planted across the Cade estate had been silent for days — background noise that yielded nothing but passing conversations, meaningless chatter, and the soft echo of Sienna’s laughter in empty rooms. Until tonight. A small pulse blinked red across Kaylee’s monitor. Her breath hitched. “I’ve got something.” Amara’s gaze snapped toward the screen. “Play it.” Kaylee did — her fingers trembling slightly as the feed opened. A voice filtered through, faint and tinny but unmistakably Sienna’s. > “I told you not to call me first! What the hell are you doing? What if Ethan sees?” The silence that followed was thic

  • Ashes Don't Bleed   Chapter Twenty: The Affair

CADE ESTATE Rain glazed the glass walls of the Cade estate in a steady rhythm — soft, deliberate and almost hypnotic. The house itself sat on the ridge like a god watching over Los Angeles, its marble veins catching every strike of lightning and holding it prisoner. Ethan Cade stood at the far end of the room, a dark silhouette against the city’s fractured light. His reflection looked back at him from the window — the same sharp jaw, the same calm menace. His tie was loosened, his shirt sleeves rolled, his drink untouched. Behind him, Sienna entered quietly, barefoot, her cream silk robe whispering as she moved. She paused when she saw him — the stillness, the restraint — and for a moment, she didn’t dare break it. Then, in that smooth, familiar voice, he spoke. “Tell me,” Ethan said without turning, “how’s our charming Ms. Voss?” Sienna stopped mid-step. “She’s… careful,” she said slowly. “Elusive.” “Careful,” Ethan repeated, tasting the word. “Is that what we’re calling it now

  • Ashes Don't Bleed   Chapter Nineteen: Ghosts?

VOSS ESTATE Rain had carved the night into trembling streaks, each one gliding down the glass like it wanted in. The thunder finally rolled past, leaving behind a quiet thick enough to hear the house breathe. Kaylee stood there, pale from the glow of the screen, her fingers tight around the laptop like it was the only thing anchoring her to the room. Amara’s voice sliced through the dark again — low, steady, and edged with a kind of control that only existed when something inside her was burning. > “Who, Kaylee?” A beat. Kaylee’s throat moved. “His name is Daniel.” The name landed like a slow drop of acid. Amara blinked once. The sound of the ocean below seemed to dim, the waves caught mid-crash. “Daniel,” she repeated — quiet, disbelieving. “Daniel who?” “Just Daniel,” Kaylee said, her voice flat. “No last name. No traceable identity. Just the Nevada registration and a string of scrambled communications tied to Cade systems. He’s good — really good. I almost didn’t catch it

  • Ashes Don't Bleed    Chapter Eighteen: The Cleaner And The Shadow

CADE ESTATE The headlines broke before dawn. Big shot Attorney Exposed in International Trust Laundering Scandal. Vale & Partners Investigation for Fraud, Offshore Schemes. Federal Inquiry Targets Manhattan Power Lawyer. The networks feasted on it, anchors sharpening their teeth on Roderick Vale’s downfall. Reporters camped outside his office, his home, even the Whitmore Hotel where he had foolishly hidden. Paparazzi caught him ducking into a black SUV, face pale, lips tight, no tie, no polish—the image of a man cornered. What the cameras didn’t show was the other story—the quiet one, the one Ethan Cade had written himself. His name never once appeared in the headlines. Not even in the footnotes. Because Ethan hadn’t been careless enough to let it. He had made Vale the sole villain in the scandal, the lightning rod, the sacrificial lamb. And the storm obliged. By mid-morning, Vale was ruined. By evening, his firm was in shambles. And Ethan Cade, immaculate as ever, stood unto
