The war room — Alex's actual study, repurposed with monitors Ryan had wired in overnight — smelled like coffee and old paper by the time Eve walked in the next morning, and she was in exactly the mood to make someone regret being in the room with her first.

"You're smiling," Alex said, looking up from a financial map spread across the desk. "That's usually a bad sign with you lately."

"I'm in a wonderful mood." She dropped into the chair across from him, folding her hands with a pleasantness that didn't reach her eyes. "I was just thinking about something. Small thing. Probably nothing."

"Eve."

"You spent months in a mask, lying to my face, letting me tear myself apart over which version of you I was falling for." She said it lightly, conversationally, like discussing the weather. "And then you handed me a bouquet of roses in a torture cell with a note about my ribs. Very romantic. Very considerate. Very much still a lie, at the time."

Alex set his pen down slowly. "I thought we settled this in the library."

"We settled the crying part. We didn't settle the part where I still, occasionally, want to throw something heavy at your head about it." She smiled sweeter. "Don't worry. I've decided against violence. Mostly."

"Mostly."

"You get to live with the mostly." She reached across the desk and stole his coffee, taking a slow sip while he watched her with the particular wariness of a man who knew exactly how much rope she was choosing to give him. "Consider it a tax. Every time I remember the mask thing, you owe me something small. A coffee. An apology I don't ask for. The occasional public humiliation at a gala."

"That's not a strategy, that's a vendetta with a payment plan."

"I contain multitudes." She set the mug down, finally letting the humor soften into something more honest. "I'm not actually furious anymore, Alex. Not the way I was in that library. But it's still *there*. Some mornings it just wants to be acknowledged instead of buried under thirty-day plans and gala seating charts."

He came around the desk, crouched by her chair so they were eye level, and took her hand without asking permission first. "Then acknowledge it. Every time. I'd rather you throw the occasional verbal punch at me over coffee than swallow it and let it rot somewhere I can't see."

"That's suspiciously mature of you."

"I had a very educational library conversation a few weeks ago." A faint, self-deprecating smile. "Some lessons stick."

She let out a breath, some of the deliberate edge finally draining out of her posture. "Fine. Truce. For now. But I reserve the right to bring it up again, unprompted, at the worst possible moment."

"Duly noted." He kissed her knuckles, formal and a little mocking, and she swatted him with her free hand, laughing despite herself. "Now — can we actually work? We have considerably less time than either of us would like."

The map on the desk wasn't financial after all — not entirely. Ryan had built it over the last week, cross-referencing everything the squad had pulled since New Jersey: shell companies, laundering routes, the Board's known assets layered against what remained of the Kovac Syndicate's physical infrastructure across three continents.

"Walk me through it," Eve said, all business now, leaning over the desk.

"The Board's power was never really about numbers," Alex said. "It's about three things holding the whole structure up. Money — the black treasury Sophia was running through my own infrastructure. Muscle — what's left of the Syndicate's enforcement arm after the mountain pass and the rail yard. And fear — the idea that nobody who crosses them survives long enough to talk about it."

"So we take all three."

"We take all three, in order, without letting any of it look coordinated until it's too late for them to regroup." He tapped the map. "Ryan's been quietly tracing the treasury since the safehouse raid. If we can get inside the actual routing architecture — not just skim off a corner of it — we can freeze it in a single move instead of chasing shell companies one at a time for the next two years."

"That's Specter's territory. Sophia's territory." Eve's jaw tightened at the name. "She's gone dark since the extraction. Marcus has her hidden somewhere the whole syndicate answers to."

"Which means we don't go after Sophia directly yet. We go after the architecture she built. Cut the money off from underneath her, and either she resurfaces to protect it, or the Board cuts *her* loose the second she stops being useful." Alex's eyes were hard now, calculating in the particular way that belonged equally to Alex and Valentino. "Either way, we get a clean shot we don't currently have."

"And the muscle?"

"That's where Valentino comes back in. Controlled. Planned." He held up a hand before she could object on principle. "Not another rail yard. A single, precise operation — cut off the Syndicate's regional command structure in one move, the way I hit their vanguard on the mountain pass, except this time with your squad running support instead of me going in alone."

Eve studied the map a long moment, tracing the routing lines with one finger. "And fear?"

"Fear takes care of itself once the other two are gone." Something colder moved behind his eyes. "An organization that's lost its money and its muscle in the same month doesn't stay frightening for long. It just becomes a rumor people used to believe."

"Thirty days isn't enough time for all three."

"No," Alex agreed. "It's not. But it's enough time to start the fuse burning on all three at once, so that by the time we're ready to actually move, the whole structure collapses together instead of one piece at a time giving them room to adapt."

Eve sat back, arms crossed, turning it over with the same cold precision she'd have once brought to a solo extraction, except now there was a whole war room of people to weigh into the plan instead of just her own instincts.

"Ryan gets the treasury," she said finally. "Aria and Sofia run recon on the Syndicate's remaining command structure. Mia and Vincenzo hold logistics and medical — which, from what I've heard, they're already unofficially doing together." A small, wicked smile. "Luca keeps eyes on Marcus's known associates, since he's apparently developing a personal interest in someone who'd notice if he went missing for a week."

"And you?"

"I run point with you. On everything." She held his gaze, steady. "Not from a safehouse. Not from behind a screen. If Valentino's going back out into the field, so am I. That's not negotiable, Alex. Not this time."

He studied her for a long moment — the old instinct to protect her from the front line visibly warring with the newer, harder-won understanding that trying to keep her out of it had never once actually worked.

"Together," he said finally. "Every step. No more masks between us, literal or otherwise."

"Together," she agreed, and shook on it like it was a contract instead of a promise, though they both understood, by now, that between them it had always been both at once.

Outside the study window, the lake sat calm and silver in the morning light, thirty days shrinking by one, the whole slow architecture of the endgame finally, quietly, beginning to turn.

Ryan found the match at two in the morning and had the sense not to wake anyone until six. By the time Eve came downstairs, he had it laid out clean across the main screen — the silent partner's name from the Voss acquisition records, side by side with a scanned page from her father's Palermo intake file. Same signature. Same looping, deliberate hand on the E that her father still wrote the same way now, twenty years and one collapsed identity later. "It's an alias," Ryan said, before she'd finished crossing the room. "Not a different man. Same handwriting, same notarization pattern, same shell-company habits your father used everywhere else in his file. He was inside Voss Enterprises eighteen years ago. Before Alex ever took control of the company." Eve stared at the two signatures until they stopped looking like evidence and started looking like her father's hand on a birthday card, on a lease, on the back of a photograph she didn't remember yet. "He never told either of us." "

She told him in the study with the call ended and the door closed and Ryan gone, the tablet on the desk between them. Alex read the name. Looked up at her. The particular stillness that came over him in moments like this — not shock, something colder and more precise, the stillness of a man rapidly revising a structural understanding he'd held for years — settled over his face like weather."He had access to everything I was building," Alex said slowly. "Every acquisition. Every financial structure. Every person who touched the company in that three-year window." He looked at the name again. "And he had access to the program's development from the other direction. And he had a connection to your father that preceded all of it.""He didn't invest in your company," Eve said. "He built a position inside it. While he was building the Board beside it. While he was building the program through it." She held Alex's gaze. "He built the whole architecture, Alex. The Board, the program, the pos

The tight briefing happened at nine with Aria absorbing the routing analysis the way she absorbed everything — fast, with the particular still intensity that meant she was already three decisions ahead and waiting for everyone else to catch up. Ryan had the eleven corporate registrations pulled by then, and the thread running through all of them, once visible, was impossible to unsee.Infrastructure. Every one of the eleven endpoint entities had some connection, however buried, to physical infrastructure — ports, rail lines, a private airfield in northern Spain, two logistics companies, a freight insurance firm, three holding companies with controlling interest in regional utilities across the Eastern Mediterranean."She's not buying leverage over the Board," Aria said, looking at the map Ryan had built. "She's buying the infrastructure the Board depends on to move anything physical.""Ports," Alex said. "Rail. Air access." He looked at Eve. "She's building a stranglehold on their phy

The alert blinked patient and unread on Ryan's third screen long after everyone else had gone to bed.Eve found it at five-forty in the morning. She hadn't slept badly — hadn't slept badly in weeks now, which was its own kind of miracle she still didn't fully trust — but something had pulled her out of the warmth of Alex's arm across her waist and down the dark stairs before she'd fully understood why. Instinct. The particular low-frequency pull of something not yet wrong but not yet right either, like a sound at the edge of hearing she couldn't place from the bedroom. She stood in Ryan's monitoring hub in the grey pre-dawn in bare feet and Alex's shirt, reading the flag on screen three, and felt the night's quiet close in around her.Sophia's authorization signature. Alex read the card in the war room, Ryan looking over his shoulder."The board in Zurich isn't the ceiling. It's the floor." Ryan turned it over, looking for anything on the back. "That's either a genuine tip or Marcus trying to send us chasing something that doesn't exist.""It's both," Eve said. She was at the map, looking at the Board's known hierarchy — the directors, the shell architecture, the funding trails Ryan had spent three weeks pulling apart. "He's not lying. But he's giving us something real at exactly the moment it benefits him for us to look somewhere other than where he actually is.""So we don't chase it," Alex said."We log it. We come back to it after Naples." She put her finger on the map. "Naples is still four days out. The routing hardware is still moving. Marcus sending a night probe and a cryptic card doesn't change the target — it means he's trying to change our focus.""He knows about Naples," Aria said, from the door."He knew about it before we did." The morning was deceptively ordinary.Eve woke first, which rarely happened. Alex slept on his good shoulder, one arm still loosely across her waist in the unconscious, possessive way he had even in sleep, and she lay there for a while doing nothing at all — studying the ceiling, listening to the lake, cataloguing the particular quality of his breathing. Deep. Even. The breathing of a man who'd finally stopped bracing for the next thing, at least for these few hours. She'd spent years not knowing what this felt like. Being still beside someone and wanting to stay.Eventually she eased out from under his arm without waking him, pulled on his shirt from the chair because it was closer than hers, and went downstairs to make coffee the way she'd learned he actually liked it — espresso base, a splash of cold water, nothing sweet. She'd picked it up without meaning to, the same way she'd learned that he read the financial pages before anything else, that he always checked the lake view firs

Eve struggled to breathe. It wasn’t because Alex was holding her too tight—though he definitely was. Every second in his arms chipped away at the walls she’d spent years building. He looked just like the photos, just like Sophia had always described. Tall. Broad shoulders. The scent of his cologne,
