Marcus's man talked faster than Eve expected, which told her everything about how thin the Syndicate's loyalty had actually worn since the rail yard.

They had him in the estate's lower level — not the interrogation room Sophia had bled information in weeks earlier, but a smaller room Eve had chosen specifically because it had no history attached to it yet. She wanted this to be hers, clean, untainted by anyone else's ghosts.

"You're going to tell me where they're moving the next shipment," she said, circling his chair slow, boots silent on concrete. "Not because I'll hurt you if you don't. Because you already know I don't need to."

The man — mid-thirties, a mid-tier courier who'd made the mistake of being loyal to the wrong employer — swallowed hard. "I don't know anything about shipments. I just drive."

"You drive for an organization currently losing a war it doesn't fully understand it's losing yet." Eve stopped behind him, leaned down close enough that her voice landed right at his ear, quiet and almost gentle, which was somehow worse than shouting. "I could have my squad do this the slow way. Days of it. I find that boring, personally. So here's what's going to happen instead."

She came around to face him, crouched to his eye level, and let him see exactly how little was left in her expression that resembled mercy.

"You tell me the route. I let you walk out of here with your knees intact and enough of a head start to disappear somewhere the Board will never think to look for a coward who talked." She tilted her head. "Or you stay quiet out of some misguided loyalty to men who'll feed you to Marcus the second you stop being useful, and I find out anyway, except slower, and considerably less pleasant for you personally."

"You wouldn't—"

"I've buried men for less than sitting in that chair being difficult." She said it flat, unhurried, and watched it land exactly the way she meant it to. "Ask around, if you survive tonight. Ask what Viper's actually capable of when she stops being patient. Your friends who lasted longer than you have plenty of stories."

He broke in under a minute.

---

Alex found her afterward in the corridor outside, arms crossed, watching through the one-way glass as Aria's people processed the intel the courier had finally coughed up.

"That wasn't the interrogation I would have run," he said, careful, not quite an accusation.

"I know." Eve didn't look at him, eyes still on the glass. "You'd have been patient. Given him an out earlier. Made it about strategy instead of fear."

"You didn't touch him."

"I didn't need to." Something cold and satisfied moved behind her eyes when she finally turned to face him. "Fear's cheaper than pain, and it lasts longer if you use it right. He'll spend the rest of his life flinching every time someone mentions my name. That's worth more to us than a few bruises he could explain away to whoever finds him."

Alex studied her a long moment, something complicated moving across his face — not disapproval, not quite. Recognition, maybe, of a version of her he'd only glimpsed in fragments until now.

"You enjoyed that," he said.

"I did." She didn't flinch from saying it. "You've spent months being careful with me. Gentle, even when you're wearing the mask. I appreciate it. I do." She stepped closer, voice dropping. "But I didn't survive the program by being soft, Alex, and I'm done pretending that part of me went quiet just because I finally remember who I am. I like being good at this. I like watching men who've hurt people I care about realize, too late, that they picked the wrong woman to underestimate."

"That's not a version of you I'm afraid of," he said, low.

"No?"

"No." His hand came up, thumb tracing her jaw with a heat that had nothing gentle left in it. "I spent months chasing a ghost in a mask because some part of me wanted exactly this — someone who wouldn't break, wouldn't need protecting from her own choices, wouldn't apologize for the teeth underneath the softness." His grip tightened at her waist, pulling her flush against him. "I think I fell for the woman who just walked out of that room just as hard as I fell for the one who cried in my library."

"Careful," Eve murmured, tilting her chin up, something dangerous and pleased curling through her voice. "Keep talking like that and I'll start thinking you like it when I'm ruthless."

"I do." He said it without apology, mouth finding the shell of her ear. "I like watching you become exactly as dangerous as you were always built to be. I just intend to be the one thing in this world you never turn that particular hunger on."

"Don't tempt me." But her hands had already found the front of his shirt, fisting into the fabric, some sharper current passing between them that had nothing soft left in it at all. "I've got a long list of people who deserve it more than you. Try to stay off it."

"I'll do my best." His grip on her hips turned bruising, possessive, dragging her back against the corridor wall with none of the careful restraint from the cottage. "Though I have to say, mia cara — watching you take that man apart with nothing but your voice was the single most attractive thing I've seen you do since the rail yard."

"Then you're going to enjoy the next thirty-eight days considerably more than you're prepared for," Eve breathed, and let him kiss the rest of the sentence out of her, sharp-edged and hungry, both of them finally done pretending the danger between them was something to be managed instead of wanted.

Ryan found the match at two in the morning and had the sense not to wake anyone until six. By the time Eve came downstairs, he had it laid out clean across the main screen — the silent partner's name from the Voss acquisition records, side by side with a scanned page from her father's Palermo intake file. Same signature. Same looping, deliberate hand on the E that her father still wrote the same way now, twenty years and one collapsed identity later. "It's an alias," Ryan said, before she'd finished crossing the room. "Not a different man. Same handwriting, same notarization pattern, same shell-company habits your father used everywhere else in his file. He was inside Voss Enterprises eighteen years ago. Before Alex ever took control of the company." Eve stared at the two signatures until they stopped looking like evidence and started looking like her father's hand on a birthday card, on a lease, on the back of a photograph she didn't remember yet. "He never told either of us." "

She told him in the study with the call ended and the door closed and Ryan gone, the tablet on the desk between them. Alex read the name. Looked up at her. The particular stillness that came over him in moments like this — not shock, something colder and more precise, the stillness of a man rapidly revising a structural understanding he'd held for years — settled over his face like weather."He had access to everything I was building," Alex said slowly. "Every acquisition. Every financial structure. Every person who touched the company in that three-year window." He looked at the name again. "And he had access to the program's development from the other direction. And he had a connection to your father that preceded all of it.""He didn't invest in your company," Eve said. "He built a position inside it. While he was building the Board beside it. While he was building the program through it." She held Alex's gaze. "He built the whole architecture, Alex. The Board, the program, the pos

The tight briefing happened at nine with Aria absorbing the routing analysis the way she absorbed everything — fast, with the particular still intensity that meant she was already three decisions ahead and waiting for everyone else to catch up. Ryan had the eleven corporate registrations pulled by then, and the thread running through all of them, once visible, was impossible to unsee.Infrastructure. Every one of the eleven endpoint entities had some connection, however buried, to physical infrastructure — ports, rail lines, a private airfield in northern Spain, two logistics companies, a freight insurance firm, three holding companies with controlling interest in regional utilities across the Eastern Mediterranean."She's not buying leverage over the Board," Aria said, looking at the map Ryan had built. "She's buying the infrastructure the Board depends on to move anything physical.""Ports," Alex said. "Rail. Air access." He looked at Eve. "She's building a stranglehold on their phy

The alert blinked patient and unread on Ryan's third screen long after everyone else had gone to bed.Eve found it at five-forty in the morning. She hadn't slept badly — hadn't slept badly in weeks now, which was its own kind of miracle she still didn't fully trust — but something had pulled her out of the warmth of Alex's arm across her waist and down the dark stairs before she'd fully understood why. Instinct. The particular low-frequency pull of something not yet wrong but not yet right either, like a sound at the edge of hearing she couldn't place from the bedroom. She stood in Ryan's monitoring hub in the grey pre-dawn in bare feet and Alex's shirt, reading the flag on screen three, and felt the night's quiet close in around her.Sophia's authorization signature. Alex read the card in the war room, Ryan looking over his shoulder."The board in Zurich isn't the ceiling. It's the floor." Ryan turned it over, looking for anything on the back. "That's either a genuine tip or Marcus trying to send us chasing something that doesn't exist.""It's both," Eve said. She was at the map, looking at the Board's known hierarchy — the directors, the shell architecture, the funding trails Ryan had spent three weeks pulling apart. "He's not lying. But he's giving us something real at exactly the moment it benefits him for us to look somewhere other than where he actually is.""So we don't chase it," Alex said."We log it. We come back to it after Naples." She put her finger on the map. "Naples is still four days out. The routing hardware is still moving. Marcus sending a night probe and a cryptic card doesn't change the target — it means he's trying to change our focus.""He knows about Naples," Aria said, from the door."He knew about it before we did." • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter One Hundred And Ten: The blind spot II

The morning was deceptively ordinary.Eve woke first, which rarely happened. Alex slept on his good shoulder, one arm still loosely across her waist in the unconscious, possessive way he had even in sleep, and she lay there for a while doing nothing at all — studying the ceiling, listening to the lake, cataloguing the particular quality of his breathing. Deep. Even. The breathing of a man who'd finally stopped bracing for the next thing, at least for these few hours. She'd spent years not knowing what this felt like. Being still beside someone and wanting to stay.Eventually she eased out from under his arm without waking him, pulled on his shirt from the chair because it was closer than hers, and went downstairs to make coffee the way she'd learned he actually liked it — espresso base, a splash of cold water, nothing sweet. She'd picked it up without meaning to, the same way she'd learned that he read the financial pages before anything else, that he always checked the lake view firs
