Cold night air bit sharp against Eve's bare face as she slipped through the perimeter gates of her estate. She hadn't put the mask back on. She wasn't sure, walking through those gates, that she ever would again. Her skin still carried a toxic heat, a lingering echo of hands and whispers and a wall he'd refused to let her past no matter how far she'd pushed. There was a raw, jagged friction sitting under her ribs now — not quite anger, not quite anything else she had a clean name for — fueled by the simple, infuriating fact that he apparently knew things about her own history that she couldn't reach on her own.

The moment she stepped into the command room, the heavy silence shattered.

Aria rose instantly from the weapons locker, eyes scanning Eve's disheveled suit and bare face. Ryan's fingers stilled over his keyboard. Mia lowered her drone controller without a word.

"Where the hell were you, Viper?" Aria's voice carried equal parts anger and real worry. "Comms were dead. No signal for a day. You vanished right after Marcus put a bounty on your head."

"I was handling a lead." Eve's voice came out flat enough to close the subject. She crossed straight to the main tactical screen, posture rigid. She couldn't tell them she'd spent the night in the arms of a man she still didn't have a face to put to. "Drop it. We have work."

Aria looked like she wanted to push further, but whatever was radiating off Eve made her think better of it. The Ice Queen had come home, but volatile tonight, carrying a current that was clearly looking for somewhere to land.

"Fine." Ryan cleared his throat, breaking the tension deliberately. "If you want somewhere to point that energy, I've got it. My scrapers caught a localized anomaly — Marcus is moving a high-value asset to a secure safehouse on the north side right now. Satellite shows a second passenger with him." He pulled up a blurry image. "Looks like his decoy. The one he's been running as a body double for Sophia whenever he needs cover."

Eve's eyes locked onto the screen, a dark, predatory edge tugging at the corner of her mouth. Valentino wanted her focused on simply surviving Marcus. Fine. She'd show him exactly what surviving looked like.

"Load up," she ordered, voice cutting through the room like a struck bell. "We raid them. Full force. No stealth, no hesitation. Tonight, we cause chaos."

Thirty minutes later, the night exploded into violence.

The squad didn't knock. Ryan breached the safehouse's security grid, killing the electronic locks, while Aria drove a modified tactical SUV straight through the reinforced front doors, metal screaming and glass shattering as Eve surged out behind it, twin submachine guns already roaring in her hands.

"Clear the perimeter!" Her voice sliced clean through the gunfire.

Marcus's mercenaries scrambled, but the squad moved like a single, synchronized machine. Aria laid down suppressing fire, pinning three guards behind a concrete pillar. Mia's drone dropped flashbangs from the ceiling, scattering the rest into disoriented chaos.

Eve moved through the crossfire like smoke given a purpose. A guard lunged from a side hallway; she caught his wrist without breaking stride, twisted until bone gave way, used his own falling body as cover against an incoming volley before dropping him with a single precise strike.

She kicked open the double doors to the upper master suite.

Marcus stood inside with a drawn pistol, face pale but furious. Behind him, cowering near the desk, was the decoy — a woman styled and positioned to pass for Sophia at a glance, close enough in build and coloring to fool anyone who hadn't studied the real thing carefully. Seeing the resemblance, deliberate and manufactured as it clearly was, sent a surge of pure adrenaline through Eve's blood regardless.

"Viper." Marcus spat the name, gun rising. "You're supposed to be dead."

"You'll need better hitmen than that, Marcus."

He fired. She dove sideways, rolling over a shattered wooden table as bullets tore into the drywall behind her, then came up firing, a burst clipping his shoulder and forcing the weapon from his hand. Before he could recover, she closed the distance and drove a boot into his chest.

He crashed into the wall and rebounded anyway, years of training kicking in despite the wound, swinging a vicious hook that grazed her jaw. The fight turned brutal fast — knees, elbows, raw and unrelenting. A hit landed against her ribs, pain flaring sharp, and she answered it by grabbing his collar and slamming him face-first into the heavy oak desk, glass shattering beneath the impact.

The decoy screamed, scrambling into the corner of the room.

Eve hauled Marcus up by the hair, forcing his head back to face her. Her bare face was fully exposed now, a fine spray of his blood across one cheek, eyes burning with something lethal and entirely unhidden.

"Look at me." She slammed him against the wall, forearm hard across his throat, cutting his air. "Look at my actual face. You thought you could erase me. Replace me with a puppet dressed up to look the part. I'm the original. I'm Viper. And you are nothing next to that."

Marcus choked, eyes wide with something close to genuine horror as he stared into the face of a woman he'd clearly believed thoroughly broken.

Eve drew her blade, steel catching the strobe of the safehouse's emergency lights, and pressed it against his throat. One motion, and the man holding half the answers to her missing years would bleed out on the floor in front of her.

The truth isn't a prize. It's a cage. And right now, you need to stay free enough to survive.

Valentino's voice cut through the bloodlust in her head with a clarity she hadn't invited. If she killed Marcus now, the Boss's network would go into full lockdown. The Board would scatter. The factions would fragment past any hope of tracing. And whatever remained of the truth about Italy, about the switch, about how she'd actually lost her mind in the first place — all of it would die in this room along with him. Dead men didn't talk. She needed him breathing to unravel whatever conspiracy actually sat underneath her own missing years.

With a look of pure disgust, she lowered the blade and drove the butt of her weapon into his temple instead, dropping him cold to the floor.

She turned her icy gaze on the decoy still trembling in the corner. "Tell him, when he wakes up, that this was only a warning. Next time, I won't leave a shadow behind to carry the message."

Eve walked out of the smoking wreckage of the safehouse, bare face set like stone. She'd brought the chaos she'd promised. She'd shown him exactly who she still was, memory or no memory. Now, the real war could finally begin in earnest.

Rain that had threatened the city all morning finally broke loose, lashing hard against the reinforced windows of Eve's command center. The steady drum of water against glass was the only sound in the room besides the low hum of cooling fans running behind the server racks stacked along the far wall.Eve stood at the central tactical table, palms flat against the glowing digital map beneath them. Simple black tactical turtleneck, hair pulled back into a stark, practical braid. No mask. Her face stayed fully exposed to her own squad now, the faint purple bruise along her jaw — a souvenir from Marcus — sitting there like a grim little medal for services rendered. Her body was in the room. Her mind hadn't fully left that blue-shadowed bedroom yet, still tangled somewhere in the memory of a heavy frame shadowing hers, a gravelled voice murmuring things that made her pulse spike against her own better judgment. Some things are better left unknown, Eve.She closed her eyes briefly, jaw tigh

The gym inside Eve's estate held nothing but silence and the heavy, rhythmic thud of bare knuckles against leather.Thud. Thud. Thud.No wraps. No mask. Sweat ran into her eyes and stung there, and she didn't slow down to wipe it away. Every strike carried a chaotic, volatile charge she couldn't quite bleed out of her system no matter how hard she hit. The raid should have given her peace. She'd dismantled Marcus's operation, stared down his decoy's terrified face, proven beyond any doubt exactly who still owned this war.Instead her head stayed entirely, infuriatingly full of him. Some things are better left unknown, Eve.Valentino's voice looped in her ears on a track she couldn't shut off, drowning out every tactical thought she tried to force to the front. She could still feel the phantom pressure of his fingers locking around her wrist in that penthouse room, immovable, deliberate. He'd used her real name. Not Viper. Not the Ice Queen. Eve — a name she hadn't handed to anyone out

Midnight over Lake Como sat thick and airless, the water gone black as poured ink. Sophia moved down the stone terrace steps like something that had learned a long time ago how to be quiet, bare feet silent against cold marble, timed precisely to a lull she'd spent three days confirming in the surveillance rotation. The main loops cycled on their standard automated pattern this late. She'd watched them do it every night this week, patient as a held breath, waiting for tonight. Her heart hammered against her ribs. Her face stayed dead calm regardless — the one skill Specter had never once let atrophy, no matter how many other pieces of herself she'd had to bury to survive this long. She reached the dock. The mahogany speedboat swayed gentle against its bumpers, patient as everything else tonight. She stepped aboard and worked the mooring knots loose with fingers that didn't shake, resisting the pull to start the engine early. Better to let the current carry her out first, silent, away

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Sixty-Eight: The Cracking Foundation

The afternoon sun began its slow descent behind the jagged peaks ringing Lake Como, dragging long, blood-colored shadows across the floor of Sophia's private dressing room. The villa had gone quiet in that particular way it always did in the hour before dinner — the distant, unbothered lap of water against the docks the only sound loud enough to notice.Sophia stood before her vanity, fingers idly tracing the gold leaf bordering the mirror. On the surface she was the picture of serene, unhurried elegance. Underneath her skin, something cold and sharp had started screaming, and she was having considerably more trouble than usual convincing it to stay quiet. It had started with something almost too small to register. An hour earlier, walking the manicured gardens with Lila, she'd dropped a piece of misinformation the way she'd dropped a hundred others before it — casual, offhand, buried inside a longer sentence about nothing. She'd mentioned, idly, that she was considering moving a port

The private wing of the city estate stayed quiet as the afternoon sun dipped lower, casting long, sharp shadows across polished floorboards. Valentino stood before the small mirror in his personal bathroom, isolated from the staff and security detail moving through the grounds outside — the one room in the house where no one else was permitted to interrupt him mid-transformation.With a practiced, fluid motion, he pinched a thin, silver filament free from his right eye. He blinked against the sterile sting of saline, and as his lid opened, a brilliant golden iris caught the last of the window light. He repeated the motion with the left, dropping both contact lenses into their small plastic case. Without the silver tint concealing his gaze, the sharp, aristocratic lines of his face belonged entirely to Alex — the billionaire master of an estate that had absolutely nothing to do with masks or safehouses on paper.A quiet knock rattled the bathroom doorframe. Luca stepped into the thresh
