Chapter sixty two: Eyes on the Lake

Morning sun hit the deep blue water of Lake Como, casting a brilliant, diamond-sharp glare across the stone terrace of the secluded villa. Shielded by sprawling white wisteria and heavy iron gates, Sophia sat alone, and to anyone watching through a long-range lens, she looked like the picture of pure European aristocracy — tailored linen, dark espresso, the particular stillness of a woman who had nowhere urgent to be.

Her mind, underneath all of it, ran like a battlefield. Decrypted printouts of financial networks and a physical map of European assets lay spread across the marble tabletop, weighted down against the breeze by nothing more elegant than her own espresso saucer.

A sharp, rhythmic buzzing broke the quiet — not from the designer phone resting openly by her cup, but from the hollow lining of a decorative planter a few feet away. She paused, gaze sweeping the empty terrace before she reached into the soil and pulled free a sleek, untraceable burner, an encrypted line reserved for exactly one person.

She answered on the first ring, no greeting wasted. Her voice dropped low and lethal. "Report, Marcus. The Board's growing impatient. If we don't move on the Boss's inner circle by the end of the month, the factions start splitting on their own."

Marcus's voice came through heavily filtered, a generic city hum bleeding faintly through the line. "Layout's ready, Sophia. Relax. Our loyalists are already positioned in the lower tiers, waiting on the signal to cut the power lines. But we've got a major, unpredictable loose end."

Her posture stiffened, fingers tightening around the warm ceramic of her cup. "Define loose end."

"Viper. Eve, of course." Marcus's sigh rattled the line, heavy with frustration. "I took the initiative. Tried to have her removed before she could dig any deeper. Sent my cleanest, most ruthless people to handle it and scrub the site behind them."

Her eyes snapped toward the horizon, jaw setting into a hard line. "And? I assume you're calling with a body count."

"I'm calling to tell you she's a ghost." His composure slipped fully into agitation now. "Dropped off the radar completely after a warehouse slip-up. My men went to her last known coordinates and found nothing but empty brass on the floor. No chatter on the dark web. No medical records surfacing anywhere. No satellite pings. It's like she and that misfit squad of hers never existed at all. Until she's accounted for, our whole flank stays open. You know exactly what she's capable of if she catches our scent properly."

Sophia let out a cold, mocking laugh, leaning back into her chair. "Let her hide in whatever hole she's crawled into. She's a broken program asset playing soldier, nothing more. We don't pause a coup for a stray hound, Marcus. Stay focused on the Boss. Once the crown is ours and we command the network outright, that squad won't have a single shadow left in this world to hide in. Keep digging quietly on the side if it helps you sleep, but don't let her distract you from the actual target. Understood?"

"Understood." His growl carried no real agreement underneath it. "Just keep your own eyes open down there."

The line went dead. Sophia powered the burner off immediately, slipping it back beneath the greenery, and took a slow, deliberate breath, smoothing her lapels flat. The mask of the flawless, untouchable queen settled back into place like it had never once slipped.

By afternoon, the heavy tension of the morning had been buried expertly beneath the glitz of a beautifully staged family day. The sun had mellowed into warm gold, painting the estate in soft pastel light. Sophia walked the manicured labyrinth of the gardens, heels clicking softly against gravel, Lila on one side radiating her usual bright, youthful energy and Giuseppe on the other, wearing the easy, unhurried smile of a man without a single care weighing on him.

To any wandering eye, it read as the perfect portrait of wealthy leisure — an Italian holiday, nothing more complicated underneath it.

"I'm telling you, Sophia, if you don't stop checking that phone like it owes you money, I'm chucking it straight into the lake," Lila teased, looping her arm through Sophia's and giving it a gentle tug. "The weather's perfection today. Look at the water. You've been so stressed lately — you deserve one day to just breathe and let us spoil you a little."

Sophia offered a smooth, practiced smile, warmth well-rehearsed in her eyes. "You're right, Lila. Forgive me. Business has a habit of following me across borders whether I invite it or not. It really is a luxury, having a distraction like this."

"Business can wait." Giuseppe fell in a step behind them, carrying a silver tray with a crystal decanter and glasses of chilled sparkling water, moving with the same effortless grace he brought to every task. "Only the best for our guest of honor. We must keep our most valuable player rested and protected, after all. If you faint from exhaustion, Alex will have my head on a spike, and frankly, I'm quite fond of my head exactly where it currently sits."

Lila laughed, loud and unguarded. "Please, Giuseppe. Alex would just give you one very stern, very terrifying look. *I'm* the one who'd put your head on a spike if the catering's ever late again."

"Duly noted. I'll speed up my pouring accordingly." He stepped forward to hand Sophia her glass, eyes crinkling with easy amusement, the picture of a loyal, lighthearted companion who'd never once given anyone a reason to look twice at him.

Sophia accepted the glass, fingers brushing his briefly as she offered a graceful nod. "Thank you, Giuseppe. Your survival is guaranteed a little while longer."

As she turned her gaze back to the shimmering water, taking a delicate sip, the playful atmosphere shifted instantly in the shadows behind her back. The easy smiles didn't reach either Lila's or Giuseppe's eyes the moment she wasn't looking directly at them.

Lila's grip on Sophia's arm stayed loose and comforting on the surface, but her eyes cut toward Giuseppe in a swift, calculating glance that lasted less than a second. He returned it with a microscopic nod, one hand drifting casually to the lapel of his linen jacket, adjusting a decorative silver pin that was, in fact, a high-frequency encrypted microphone. Every word out of Sophia's mouth, every sharp intake of breath, every offhand comment about the future — all of it beamed live to a secure server miles away.

Alex's orders on this had been strict, and unyielding, and given without room for argument: *Put eyes on her. Track her movements, log her associates, and do not let her suspect a single thing.*

"So, Sophia," Lila asked, voice bouncing back into its bubbly register as they reached a marble bench overlooking the docks, "are we taking the speedboat out later, or are you going to keep pretending you actually enjoy walking gravel paths in those ridiculous heels?"

"Hey, those heels are art," Giuseppe defended, grinning, though his posture stayed strategically close enough to keep the audio feed clean. "But I agree. Let's get on the water. Might blow some of that serious business brain of yours clean out to sea for an hour."

Sophia smiled, fully wrapped in the illusion of safety, entirely unaware that the very people making her laugh were quietly tracing the rhythm of her own heartbeat back to a listening room she'd never once suspected existed.

The room sat bathed in the deep, muted blue of pre-dawn, lit only by the fractured glow of the city skyline filtering through floor-to-ceiling windows several stories above the street below. Somewhere down there, headlights still moved through the rain in slow, indifferent lines — the same shadows in the street that had followed both of them here, in their own separate ways, without either one fully admitting it out loud. The bar, the bourbon, the wet walk through the dark, had all faded into something closer to memory. What remained now was the quiet, heavy stillness of a private room Valentino had brought her to instead of anywhere either of them might have been recognized.Eve lay on top of the covers, still fully dressed, her bare face pressed against a pillow that smelled faintly of cedar and rain. He'd insisted on the couch across the room, and she'd been too tired and too strung out to argue the point, though some small, sober corner of her mind had noted the restraint anyway,

Marcus paced the length of his dim, high-ceilinged study, heavy velvet curtains drawn tight against the afternoon sun. Three encrypted tablets lay across the desk, each displaying a glowing map of Europe. None of them showed him what he actually wanted to see."Nothing." He growled it to the empty room, slamming his palm flat against the polished wood. He'd pulled every string available to him, leaned on every dirty contact the underworld still owed him, spent a small fortune trying to have Eve permanently erased. His hitmen were among the best in the business — men who left no brass, no blood, no witnesses behind them. And they had walked into an empty nest regardless. She hadn't just evaded the trap. She'd vanished like smoke off a struck match. His knuckles whitened against the edge of the desk. The switch in Italy had been a masterpiece of deception, a delicate house of cards that would eventually hand him and Sophia the whole crown between them. But Eve remained the wild card nei

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Sixty-one: Unmasked Moment

Eve walked through the quiet streets near the old warehouse district as evening settled over the city, the sky gone deep orange bleeding into purple, street lamps flickering on one by one like the city was slowly remembering itself. A solid tip had put Valentino back in this stretch of blocks, and her black mask sat tight against her skin, familiar now in a way that unsettled her more than the mask itself ever had. Her suit was sharp, her hair pulled back tight beneath the fabric's edge, and she moved with the particular purpose of a woman who had run out of patience for half-answers.The squad kept their distance without her needing to ask twice. Aria waited two blocks back. Mia monitored from a rooftop with a small drone tucked low against the skyline. Ryan tracked signal traffic from a parked van. She'd told them plainly this confrontation was hers alone. The pull toward Valentino had grown too strong, too persistent, to keep circling politely. She needed real answers this time. No

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Sixty: Quiet Gathering

Valentino spent the morning inside his private estate on the edge of the city — a different estate from Eve's, quiet and well-hidden behind high walls and thick trees, chosen specifically because it sat close enough to the center of things without ever risking overlap with anything she might recognize. He moved through the rooms without his mask, without the cap, face bare only within these walls. No one else was permitted inside except Dario, the one man he trusted enough to let see him unguarded. He drank coffee at the large wooden table near the window, the morning light doing something good for him that he rarely let himself notice out loud. Dario had left a stack of papers — small reports on money trails and old contacts, nothing dramatic, just the patient accumulation that actually won this kind of game. Valentino made notes in a plain notebook as he read. Gathering information was simply his daily work now. Slow. Careful. The only kind of work that ever actually held up under p

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Fifty-Nine: Return to Ice

Eve decided it was time to go home. New York had given her pieces — more than she'd expected, and fewer than she needed — but the real fight waited back where her squad, her company, and the quiet remains of her ordinary life were all still holding steady without her. She packed her small bag in the hotel room early the next morning, the black mask staying on the entire time, soft fabric fitted snug over everything but her eyes. She checked herself once in the mirror before leaving. Eyes sharp. Everything else hidden. The mask had become her armor after the park, after his hands, after the particular way he'd made her feel exposed without ever once seeing her face. It kept Valentino from reading her. It kept everyone from reading her, which, this morning, felt like exactly the point. The car ride to the airport drew a few stares — a woman in a tailored black suit and a full face mask tended to do that — but no one asked questions, and security passed her through with barely a second l

  • Ashes Of Desire     Chapter 4: Cracks in the Facade

Eve woke tangled in sheets that didn’t belong to her, the unfamiliar softness cocooning her limbs. The morning sun, bold and intrusive, leaked through gauzy curtains, painting the room in gold. Eve struggled to breathe. It wasn’t because Alex was holding her too tight—though he definitely was. Every second in his arms chipped away at the walls she’d spent years building. He looked just like the photos, just like Sophia had always described. Tall. Broad shoulders. The scent of his cologne,

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter 6: Flickering Doubts

Eve paced the master bedroom, the thick carpet swallowing her footsteps. The storm had finally blown past, but it left behind a heavy, unnatural silence pressing in on the windows. Alex left her with a kiss on the forehead and a promise—he’d take care of Marcus. Whatever that meant. She could still

Three days drifted past, dissolving into a haze of silk sheets, whispered half-truths, and the subtle choreography of deception. The mansion breathed with hidden life, and Eve, ever watchful, adapted to its pulse. She fell in step with the staff’s daily rituals—the clatter of breakfast trays at eig
