The sixth bell stopped ringing.

Silence followed.

Not ordinary silence.

The kind that came before something terrible.

Maya stared at the mark beneath her feet.

A black crescent had appeared against the stone, thin lines branching from it like veins.

Her skin burned.

“What is it?”

Julian didn't answer.

He was staring at the stranger.

The man claiming to be her brother.

“Get away from her.”

The stranger smiled.

“You're still protecting her.”

Julian raised his weapon.

“I said move.”

  • Ashes Of Desire   The Death Mark

The sixth bell stopped ringing. Silence followed. Not ordinary silence. The kind that came before something terrible. Maya stared at the mark beneath her feet. A black crescent had appeared against the stone, thin lines branching from it like veins. Her skin burned. “What is it?” Julian didn't answer. He was staring at the stranger. The man claiming to be her brother. “Get away from her.” The stranger smiled. “You're still protecting her.” Julian raised his weapon. “I said move.” The stranger didn't. Instead, he looked at Maya. “You really don't remember me?” Maya shook her head. “I've never seen you before.” “You have.” He took another step. “When you were six.” Maya's breath caught. A memory flashed. A garden. Rain. A boy standing beneath an old oak tree. Someone had placed a silver pendant around her neck. Then— blood. Maya gasped and grabbed her head. Julian caught her. “Maya?” “I saw something.” “What?” “A boy.” The stranger smiled. “Your br

  • Ashes Of Desire   The First King

Maya couldn't see. She couldn't hear Julian. She couldn't hear her mother. She couldn't hear the alarms, the gunfire, or even her own breathing. There was only darkness. And the voice. Daughter of Vale. It echoed inside her mind. Come home. Maya swallowed. “Where?” The darkness shifted. A distant light appeared. Then another. Then hundreds. Torches. An enormous stone hall emerged around her. Maya looked down. She was no longer standing in Bloodmoon. She was barefoot on black marble. Her dress had changed. Silver markings covered her arms. At the end of the hall stood a throne. Not the black throne beneath Bloodmoon. Something older. Larger. Made from white stone and covered in blood-red symbols. And sitting upon it— was a man. Maya stopped. He looked impossibly old. Not elderly. Ancient. His hair was black streaked with silver. His face was sharp and severe. His eyes were the same strange gold as hers. He stood. The entire hall seemed to bow with him

  • Ashes Of Desire   The Woman Beneath Bloodmoon

The door beneath Bloodmoon opened with a sound that Maya felt more than heard. A deep metallic groan traveled through the floor. Dust fell from the ceiling. Then the lights in the corridor turned black. For one terrifying second, nobody moved. Maya stared toward the southern wing. Her mother. Alive. Somewhere beneath them. The thought was too enormous to fit inside her mind. Julian stepped beside her, weapon already in his hand. “Stay behind me.” Maya didn't even look at him. “No.” “Maya.” “You heard her.” “I heard a voice.” “I know that voice.” Her eyes burned. “I know my mother's voice.” Julian's expression softened for half a second. Then the sound came again. BOOM. The entire estate shook. Vance's voice crackled through the communicator. “Julian, we're losing the southern corridor.” “How many?” “Unknown.” “Where's Clara?” “With me.” A burst of gunfire exploded through the speaker. Vance swore. “They're inside the vault.” Julian looked at Maya. “I'

  • Ashes Of Desire   The Night Elias Vale Disappeared

For three seconds, Maya couldn’t move. The silence after Cassian’s words was worse than the gunfire outside. She stared at Julian. He stared back. But he didn’t say anything. That was enough. Maya slowly pulled her hand from his. “You were there.” Julian’s jaw tightened. “Maya—” “You were there.” “I was.” The words landed like a physical blow. Adrian turned away. Vance lowered his weapon. Even Clara went silent. Maya’s breathing became shallow. “What happened?” Julian looked at the floor. “I was nineteen.” “That isn’t an answer.” “My father sent me to Bloodmoon.” “Why?” “To protect Elias.” Maya laughed once, but there was no humor in it. “Protect him from what?” Julian finally looked at her. “Cassian.” The name seemed to poison the air. Maya stepped closer. “Then why did everyone tell me my father died?” “Because Cassian made sure you believed it.” “Everyone?” Julian hesitated. “Not everyone.” Maya’s eyes narrowed.

  • Ashes Of Desire   The Original Bloodmoon King

The image on the screen moved. Maya froze. For several seconds, nobody spoke. The man standing beside her father in the old photograph was no longer a photograph. He was breathing. Watching. Waiting. His face appeared older than it had in the picture, but there was no mistaking him. The same sharp cheekbones. The same dark eyes. The same silver threaded through his black hair. Adrian stared at the screen as though he had seen a ghost. “No,” he whispered. Maya turned toward him. “You know him.” Adrian swallowed. “I know who he is.” Julian, his shoulder bleeding beneath his torn shirt, stepped closer to Maya. “Then tell us.” The man on the screen smiled. Not warmly. Not cruelly. Almost knowingly. “You’ve finally opened the throne.” His voice filled the chamber. Maya’s heartbeat accelerated. “Who are you?” The man’s gaze settled directly on her. “I am Cassian Vale.” Adrian’s face drained of color. “The first king of Bloodmoon.” Sile

  • Ashes Of Desire   The Protectors Lie

The silence after the recording felt heavier than the darkness that had swallowed Bloodmoon. Maya stared at Julian. He didn’t move. Didn’t speak. Didn’t even blink. Around them, weapons remained trained on the four of them. Marcus stood across the chamber with an expression of quiet satisfaction. Adrian looked troubled. Vance’s eyes moved between Julian and Maya. Clara remained beside him, tense and ready. Maya’s fingers tightened around the recording device. Her father’s voice still echoed inside her head. It is the person who has been protecting you all along. Her eyes remained fixed on Julian. “Tell me he’s lying.” Julian’s jaw tightened. “Maya—” “Tell me.” “I can’t.” Her heart sank. The chamber seemed to tilt beneath her feet. Vance stepped forward. “Julian.” Julian lifted one hand. “Stay out of this.” Maya stared at him. “You knew.” “No.” “You knew something.” “I knew there were things about your family I wasn’t allowed to
