Chapter 35 - That was a lot

"Oh my God, it's so nice to see you again!" Aurora says as he drops her bag in Derek's office and hugs me. "I heard you gave my brother a chance to win you over." She gives Derek a glance over my shoulder, then smiles at me. "Give him a run for his money, make him sweat."

"Hey!" Derek says as he walks up to me and stares at his sister.

"Relax, I'm only kidding." She says, then winks at me. "But really, I'm happy. Now I have a chance of having a normal sister in law and not one of those many brainless chicks mom wanted to set you up." Now it is I who turns to Derek.

"How many chicks are we talking about?" I ask.

Derek lifts his hands in surrender. “Okay, in my defense, I didn’t date all of them.” Aurora snorts.

“You didn’t date any of them. You endured dinners while Mom presented them like auction items.” Not sure if she wants to defend him or just make it clear to me that he had no interest in anyone else.

“I think I had a migraine for at least three of those,” he mutters.

Aurora gave me some clarity on what I wanted to do with Camilla. I wasn't gonna send the pictures to the press or Camilla, no. When the time comes, I will hand Aurora the gun and let her finish her mother. Perhaps to someone, this would feel a bit too dark, setting a daughter against her own mother, but the way I see it, I would simply give Aurora the satisfaction of giving Camilla exactly what she deserves. The boutique is more temple than store. Marble floors, gold framed mirrors, and glass racks spaced far enough apart to make each dress feel sacred. No music plays, only the gentle hush of stylists whispering in French and the click of Louboutin heels moving across polished stone.Aurora doesn't browse, she glides. Eyes scanning, fingers occasionally grazing fabric like she’s sifting through weapons in an armory. “We’re not going for pretty,” she says without looking at me. “We’re going for unforgettable.”A stylist appears from behind a velvet curtain, clipboard in hand, all cheek

Levy’s fingers danced over the keyboard like they were born to make trouble. He hummed, HUMMED, while breaking into Benjamin’s encrypted files, which felt a little like someone whistling while defusing a bomb. I paced behind him, arms crossed so tightly my shoulders ached.“Please tell me you’re not just reading his grocery list,” I muttered.“Depends. If by ‘grocery list’ you mean off shore financial trails, then yes. Lots of avocados and federal crimes,” Levy replied, eyes glued to the screen. “This guy’s folder naming system is so lazy I feel personally offended. There’s a folder actually called ‘lifeline’. Who does that?”I leaned over. “Anything useful?”“Define useful. Do you want morally compromising, criminally actionable, or ‘huh, I always suspected he was the kind of guy who leaves one second on the microwave timer and walks away’?”“Levy.”“Fine, fine. Let’s talk treasure. Because your boy Benjamin, he’s been hiding something big.”He tapped a key, and the screen filled wit

I stared at him, trying to process the quiet storm behind his words.“Not who she says she is?” I repeated slowly. “You just said you think you’ll give her the job.”“I didn’t say I trust her,” he replied. “But if I send her away now, I lose sight of her. I’d rather keep the wolf in the yard than wonder which window she’s circling.” The way he said it, measured, restrained, made me realize how deeply unsettled he was. Derek wasn’t impulsive, or at least that wasn't how I saw him. He wasn’t paranoid. But something in her performance had hit a nerve too specific to ignore.“Derek,” I said, my voice low but sharp. "This Jackson Carter..." His eyes grow steady on mine with the mention of Jack's name. "If he did so much harm to your company, to your family... why do you talk about him with so much... care?" I need to be able to sense if all of this is a performance or perhaps, deep down, lost... There is some sympathy for my guiltless brother. Derek didn’t respond right away. His eyes hel

“Katherine Carter.”The name hit the room like a slap. Not loud. Not fast. But sharp enough to make every molecule in the air turn still. There couldn't be a Katherine Carter looking for Derek. I am Katherine Carter. Whoever this person was, it wasn't me. I felt Derek’s hand tense in mine. Not a twitch. A clench, like someone had just grabbed him by the throat and whispered his sins out loud. I turned my head slowly to look at him. His jaw was locked, eyes fixed ahead.“What did she say her name was?” I asked, even though I’d heard it loud and clear. The assistant shifted uncomfortably. “Katherine. Carter. She insisted.”Derek’s voice was barely above a whisper. “That’s not...”No. Not possible… because the real Katherine Carter stood right next to him. And I felt cold. Colder than I had in years.“Derek?” I said, stepping in front of him now, placing myself squarely between him and the door, between him and the ghost. “Is everything alright? Do you want me to go with you?” I ask h

He flinched at the formality like it stung. “It doesn’t have to end,” he said, voice low, rough at the edges. “We can handle this. I can handle this.”I shook my head slowly. “You’re not listening.”“I am,” he stepped closer. “I’ve heard every word you’ve said, I just dont care for it." He admits. Perhaps this is where his real edges show, when he can't have what he wants. Perhaps he is much like his mother said, a little boy who was just denied a toy, more like the man from three years ago. "I want you, Isa. More than I can possibly control, and for that, I am ready to stand against everyone who stands in our way. Including my mother." My breath caught, just slightly, but I didn’t let it show.“You don’t get to want me like that,” I said, voice cold. Controlled. “Not here. Not now. Not when wanting me makes me a liability.” He ran a hand through his hair, frustrated, pacing a step like his skin didn’t fit right. “You’re not a liability. You’re the only thing in this company that fe
