Julianne wondered why she had stood in the first place, but more importantly, she was relieved that Cassian caught that in time and acted immediately. Watching them celebrate their win stirred something in her. When was the last time she had such feeling? Or better still, what good thing happened to make her feel that way? For as long as she could remember, those feelings felt foreign now. It felt like she had been invincible for long even before she started to wish for it.“Julianne.”She froze at the sound of her name spoken quietly behind her and she turned slowly. It was Ryker, he was standing right behind her with his hands in his pockets and eyes staring at her, as always.“Yeah?”“Would you um…like to come with me?”Julianne pulled her brows in confusion. When did they become friends that he was asking her to come with him? But then, she remembered he had saved her from Jordan the other day right after saying he doesn’t want to get involved with her. Well, he was still consider
Marianne forced a smile, trying not to break. She held Julianne’s hand and said, “We don’t know everyone’s story. I’ve always believed that someone out there has had it worse than me too. That is why no matter what happens, I’m not going to let my past haunt me and keep me from what is ahead of me.”Julianne lowered her eyes down to their hands where Marianne gently rubbed hers.“I told you that no matter how worse it can be, I won’t leave because of it,” Marianne said, urging her. “I want to know when you need me to help you and when to stay away.”Julianne finally mustered courage and explained everything to her, starting from when everything started to go downhill in her life to when she started to see herself as a monster, to when she tried to escape it and how somehow, it was back again. She didn’t leave out the part about the headmistress, the anonymous person, Velvet, Ryker, Cassian, and lastly, Maximus. She gave her a mirror to look at the side of her neck and said;“The other
“What Maximus saw in me? W-what are you talking about?” Marianne asked and looked at Julianne at the same time whose eyes were on Remus. There was silence at the table for a while until Remus spoke again, “Wait, I thought you two were friends, and I mean, friends.”“Yes we are, but what has Maximus got to do with that?” Marianne asked him.Remus felt like he was in a fix and he looked at Julianne, expecting her to say something at least. When she didn’t, and knowing Marianne was still waiting for an answer, he decided to go the easy way. He looked at Marianne straight in the eyes and locked it.“Don’t you dare,” Julianne warned firmly and Remus broke the gaze before slumping his shoulders.Marianne blinked and rubbed her eyes before looking at the both of them, not understanding what was going on. Guessing that it must have to do with the thing Julianne was still going to tell her when she is ready, she made to excuse herself. “I’ll just head back to the dorm.”“No Marianne,” Julianne
Monday came and classes went on as normal. No one talked about anything unusual, just the normal boring stuff. As soon as the second period ended, Julianne left the class and went to where Cassian’s class was. She saw some students still inside, talking, while some already started to leave. Her eyes moved everywhere and there was no sign of Cassian or his friends. She turned and started to walk back to her next class, hoping that Cassian was fine and things hadn’t gotten worse with him. As she made her way back, she saw Ryker who was also coming. He stopped and had his eyes on her, as if waiting to ask her something. She also stopped walking, waiting if he would come to her and talk, but instead, he resumed walking and passed by her side, his fingers slightly brushing against hers.Julianne felt embarrassed immediately and she looked to see if no one was watching her. Thankfully, no one was. She held her hand to herself and looked back at him, wondering if he did it on purpose.*“Hav
“From the moment you came, something shifted and it is only the beings who lurks in the dark that knows. For some, it could mean danger for them. For another, it could mean another thing entirely. I also saw you as a threat and even now, a sleeping threat, until I find out exactly what you are. I have already ruled out the possibility of being a witch.”“I’m sorry, what?” Julianne asked with a squeezed face.“Yes, there were once witches but we have them no more because it’s hard for them to survive in a place like this, more less outside.”Julianne sighed and slumped her shoulders. “I don’t know what I am,” she said with a drop of her head. “I don’t want to be anything other than be a normal human.”“This is not the time to be pitiful,” Maximus said plainly.“I am not,” Julianne said immediately and sniffed before wearing a frown. “You said Cassian didn’t tell you about me. Then how can I trust you? For all I know, you could be doing what the headmistress wants, or even secretly plot
The air shifted in the room and the window slightly creaked open. Julianne was lying fast asleep and the wind moved to where she was, brushing against her skin. She let out a slight groan and turned on the bed.“Julianne.”Her ears twitched at the whisper of her name and she opened her eyes slowly. Her eyes fell on a figure standing tall above her and she slowly raised her eyes to see a faceless person. She let out a scream immediately and woke up with a start, panting. The room was bright and she blinked to clear her eyes before placing a hand on her forehead. She let out a sigh and moved her eyes to the door when she heard a distant knock.*Marianne walked to the door and opened it.“Hi Jul—” she paused, as if frozen and she quickly closed her mouth, adjusting her glasses to see properly. “Hi,” she greeted Maximus who stood outside her room and wondered what he could possibly want from her so early in the morning.Realizing that her room was in view and she had not yet tidied it, s
