The Last Secret

The world slowed to a crawl. Elena saw the absolute madness in Chloe’s eyes and the muscle in her finger contracting around the trigger.

There was no time for Adrian to aim away from the trap. There was no time to negotiate.

Bang!

The gunshot roared through the hollow warehouse.

In that fraction of a second, Elena didn't think about her rebirth, her revenge, or the future she had carefully orchestrated. She only saw her daughter. With a primal scream, Elena threw her body across the concrete floor, launching herself directly in front of the wooden chair.

The bullet tore through the flesh of Elena’s shoulder. The force of the impact spun her around, her blood splattering onto the dusty floor as she collapsed over Lily, shielding the toddler completely with her own body.

"Elena!" Adrian’s voice shattered the darkness, raw and filled with a terror he had never felt in his entire life.

Before Chloe could pull the trigger a second time or collapse backward onto the tripwire, Adrian moved with superhuman speed. He didn't fire his weapon. Instead, he dropped the rifle, lunging forward through the shadows like a black panther. His massive frame collided with Chloe’s upper body, his iron grip wrenching her arms forward, away from the tripwire, throwing her violently onto the floor toward the center of the room.

The Zippo lighter flew out of Chloe's left hand, sparking against the concrete, rolling inches away from a puddle of gasoline.

Adrian immediately dropped to his knees beside Elena, his large, trembling hands pressing down on her bleeding shoulder. His face was pale, his dark eyes frantic. "Elena... stay with me. Look at me! Marcus! Get the medical unit up here now!"

"Lily..." Elena gasped, coughing as the metallic taste of blood rose in her throat. She weakly shifted her weight to look down. Beneath her, Lily was crying but entirely unhurt, her wide eyes staring up at her mother.

"She’s safe. She’s safe because of you," Adrian whispered, his voice cracking as he pulled both of them into his massive chest, his body shaking with relief.

On the floor a few feet away, Chloe groaned, trying to crawl back toward the tripwire. Her face was twisted in a grotesque mask of defeat. "You... you ruined everything... I will still burn this place... we will all die..." She reached out her hand, her fingers scraping against the floor, trying to reach the flickering Zippo lighter.

Elena weakly pushed herself up from Adrian’s embrace, ignoring the agonizing pain in her shoulder. Supported by Adrian’s solid arm, she stared down at her stepsister with eyes that held the cold, detached wisdom of two lifetimes.

"You won't light that match, Chloe," Elena said, her voice dropping to a deathly quiet whisper that echoed over the roaring rain outside. "Because if I die tonight, the truth about your mother's death dies with me."

Chloe froze, her fingers inches away from the lighter. Her head snapped up, her bloodshot eyes widening. "What did you say? My mother died of a heart attack!"

"That’s the lie Julian Vance fed you when you were eighteen," Elena replied, a bitter, mocking smile cutting through the blood on her face. In her past life, weeks before her own murder, Elena had discovered a hidden vault in Julian's old study containing the real medical reports of Chloe's mother. Julian had poisoned the old woman to inherit her hidden properties early, framing it as a natural death while comforting a grieving, naive Chloe.

Elena stared directly into Chloe's soul. "Julian didn't comfort you because he loved you, Chloe. He poisoned your mother's tea with digitalis. He murdered her so he could access the fake registry and the fake names she used to hide her money. You've been sleeping in the bed of the man who killed your mother, and you ruined your own life just to help him."

The words struck Chloe like a physical blow.

Her entire body went entirely rigid. The manic energy inside her vanished, replaced by a hollow, paralyzing psychological shock. Her jaw trembled. The image of the man she had escaped prison for—the man she had worshipped and protected—crumbled into ash in her mind.

"No..." Chloe whispered, her voice cracking as her eyes filled with tears of pure horror. "No, Julian loved me... he wouldn't..."

"Check his offshore accounts under the name 'Amara Ortiz.' The transactions were finalized two hours after your mother's pulse stopped," Elena delivered the final blow.

Chloe’s hand shook violently. The psychological weight of realization broke her sanity completely. Her fingers went limp, and her hand dropped away from the floor, letting the Zippo lighter click shut, extinguishing the flame. She collapsed into a fetal position, weeping hysterically, completely broken.

Adrian didn't waste another second. He scooped Lily up with one arm and lifted Elena into his other, holding her securely against his chest as his syndicate soldiers finally swarmed the room, pinning a catatonic Chloe to the floor.

"Hold onto me," Adrian commanded Elena, his voice thick with a dark, terrifying possessiveness as he carried her down the creaking stairs into the pouring rain. "You survived the fire in your past, and you survived the bullet tonight. You are never leaving my sight again, Elena Vale."

Elena closed her eyes against his chest, feeling the steady, fierce beat of his heart as the ambulance sirens wailed in the distance. The Vance family was entirely destroyed. Her revenge was complete.

But as Adrian placed her gently onto the medical gurney inside the armored ambulance, Marcus rushed to the door, his face pale, holding an encrypted satellite tablet.

"Boss," Marcus breathed, his voice tight. "We just intercepted a global wire transfer. Julian Vance didn't orchestrate this alone from his cell. The money to bribe the transport guards came from an anonymous entity in Europe... signed with the crest of the Han Group's rival syndicate. And they just put a billion-dollar bounty on the Vale heir."

The warning remained on the screens for less than ten seconds, but its message had already settled over the room like smoke.TRUST NO ONE.Then the monitors went dark. The prisoner was dragged into the security corridor while the directors stood frozen around the conference table. Some stared at Elena. Others stared at one another, suddenly aware that any face in the room could belong to the enemy.Adrian kept his eyes on the empty elevator.“Seal the floor,” he ordered. The security chief immediately spoke into his radio. “No one enters or exits the executive level. Shut down the elevators and lock the stairwell doors.”“Do not shut down the entire building,” Elena said.Adrian turned toward her. “That man carried detonators into this room.”“He also wanted us to believe the entire building is compromised.”“He may be right.”“Th

The boardroom doors were locked from the inside.Elena had ordered it before the security team finished removing the broken glass. No one was permitted to leave—not the directors, not the assistants, and not even the legal advisers who had been summoned after the attack. The city continued to move beyond the shattered windows, but inside the room, time had narrowed to the people seated around the table. And the information they were hiding.Adrian stood near the eastern wall, speaking quietly with the security chief. Two guards remained outside the doors while another examined the bullet lodged in the steel frame. The sniper had escaped, but the attack had left behind enough evidence to expose a larger operation.Elena opened the first folder.“Three weeks ago,” she said, “our European contacts received a copy of the South Harbor transport schedule. Two days later, one of our warehouses was raided.”Dario

By eight o’clock in the morning, the boardroom had already become a battlefield.Elena stood before the glass wall overlooking the city, her reflection sharp against the pale gold of sunrise. Below, traffic crawled through the streets, unaware that three floors above, powerful men and women were preparing to decide whether she belonged among them.On the table behind her lay the documents confirming her appointment as Vice-Chairwoman of the Veyra Group. The title was official. The danger was not.“Your security team is in position,” Adrian said.He stood near the closed doors, dressed in a dark suit without a tie. He looked calm to anyone who did not know him. Elena knew better. His stillness was the kind that came before violence. She turned toward him. “How many?”“Six inside the building. Four on the adjacent rooftops. Two in the parking structure.”“You sound disappoint

The heavy velvet box sat on the scarred mahogany table, its golden crest catching the flickering light from the burning building across the street. The federal courier bowed once more before retreating back into the secure elevator line, leaving a tense silence behind. Outside the shattered windows, the freezing rain poured into the corporate penthouse, but no one in the room felt the cold.Adrian stepped forward, his long, tattooed fingers sweeping over the velvet lid. With a fluid click, the lock snapped open, revealing a heavily encrypted, military-grade satellite drive."Marcus, interface it," Adrian commanded, his deep voice carrying the flat, lethal finality of a sovereign who had just conquered a warzone.Marcus rushed to the secondary terminal, his hands flying across the console. Within seconds, the screen bypassed the encryption, translating the raw data into a shimmering, high-resolution underground map of the city’s international harbor ports.

  • Ashes of My First Life: Enter the Tycoon   The Human Shield

The sharp, high-velocity crack of the sniper bullet echoing through the ninety-story penthouse boardroom was instantly followed by the deafening sound of shattering glass. The bulletproof windows, designed to withstand standard military-grade munitions, had been punctured by an armor-piercing round that left a web of fractures across the massive panels. Shards of crystal rained down on the mahogany table, dancing under the harsh fluorescent lights."Down!" Adrian roared. Before the corporate directors or the elite guards could even react to the sudden breach, Adrian’s towering frame blurred through the air. He did not pull Elena away from the terminal, nor did he drag her to the secure escape chute behind the high-backed leather chairs. He knew with an absolute, chilling certainty that if Elena stepped away from the console now, the global trade embargo would fail, the firewall would close, and Lily’s bounty would remain an active beacon for every assassin

  • Ashes of My First Life: Enter the Tycoon   The Fortress of the Matriarch

The blinding beams of the tactical flashlights reflected off the churning, waist-deep waters of the Saint-Jude bunker as Marcus’s words hung in the freezing air. A global decree. The European Syndicate had not accepted their defeat in the dark tunnels of District 4; instead, they had chosen to burn the entire international underworld down to claim the Vale bloodline. A billion-dollar bounty was no longer a hidden threat—it was an open invitation for every top-tier executioner, syndicate hitman, and black-market mercenary across the hemisphere to converge on their city.Adrian did not look at the tablet. His pitch-black eyes remained fixed on Elena, who was climbing into the inflatable tactical raft, her trembling arms holding Lily tightly against her chest. The small child had fallen into a deep sleep of sheer exhaustion, her thumb tucked securely inside her mouth, completely unaware that the world outside was preparing for a bloodbath."Let them board thei
