The Hidden Hand

The warning remained on the screens for less than ten seconds, but its message had already settled over the room like smoke.

TRUST NO ONE.

Then the monitors went dark.

The prisoner was dragged into the security corridor while the directors stood frozen around the conference table. Some stared at Elena. Others stared at one another, suddenly aware that any face in the room could belong to the enemy.

Adrian kept his eyes on the empty elevator.

“Seal the floor,” he ordered.

The security chief immediately spoke into his radio. “No one enters or exits the executive level. Shut down the elevators and lock the stairwell doors.”

“Do not shut down the entire building,” Elena said.

Adrian turned toward her. “That man carried detonators into this room.”

“He also wanted us to believe the entire building is compromised.”

“He may be right.”

“Then we verify it before causing a panic.”

Adrian’s expression hardened. “They showed us Lily’s photograph.”

The room quieted again.

Elena had noticed the photograph the instant the toolbox opened. Lily’s face had been captured from a distance, probably outside her school. She wore a yellow jacket and held a small paper bag in one hand. The picture was ordinary.

That was what made it terrifying.

The photograph had not been taken during an operation. It had been taken during a normal moment, when Lily believed she was safe.

Elena looked toward the security chief. “Where is Lily now?”

“Her protection detail reports that she is at the residence.”

“Call them.”

The officer made the call. Everyone waited while the line connected.

A moment later, his face changed.

“What?” Elena demanded.

“No answer.”

Adrian moved toward the doors.

Elena caught his arm. “Wait.”

He looked down at her hand, then at her face.

“She may be asleep,” Elena said, though she did not believe it. “The line could be blocked.”

“Or the detail is down.”

“We need facts.”

Adrian forced himself to stop. His anger was controlled, but barely. His hand closed into a fist at his side.

Elena turned to Mara. “How long ago did you leave my office?”

“Less than twenty minutes,” the assistant replied.

“Who was on the executive floor?”

“Your security team, Mr. Hale, Mr. Dario’s legal adviser, and the board members.”

“Anyone else?”

Mara shook her head. “A courier came earlier.”

“What courier?”

“I don’t know. He had documents for the chairman.”

Dario’s head snapped toward her. “That is irrelevant.”

“Perhaps,” Elena said. “But we will determine that.”

She looked at the security chief. “Review all entrance footage from the past six hours. I want the courier identified, along with everyone who entered or left this floor.”

The chief nodded and began issuing orders.

Victor Hale remained under guard near the wall. He watched the unfolding chaos with an unreadable expression.

Elena approached him.

“Did you know about Lily?”

Victor said nothing.

“Did the people you contacted know about her?”

His silence lasted too long.

Adrian stepped closer.

Victor looked between them. “You think I arranged this?”

“I think you have been sending information outside the company,” Elena replied. “Whether you knew how far the information would travel is another question.”

“I never gave anyone details about the child.”

“But someone had them.”

“I don’t know who took that photograph.”

“You were in contact with the European network.”

Victor’s eyes flickered.

It was a small reaction, but Elena saw it.

“Who is their representative?” she asked.

Victor laughed without humor. “You have no idea what you are facing.”

“Then educate me.”

“They do not operate like the people you have fought before. They do not need armies in the streets. They do not need to take over buildings. They enter through systems, friendships, contracts, and private fears.”

His gaze shifted toward the black screens.

“They turn people against one another before anyone realizes there is a war.”

Adrian seized the front of his jacket. “Where is Lily?”

Victor’s composure broke.

“I told you, I don’t know!”

Adrian pressed him against the wall.

Elena stepped forward again. “Adrian.”

“He knows something.”

“He may. But if you break his neck, we lose the answer.”

For several seconds, Adrian did not move.

Then he released Victor.

The CFO fell against the wall, coughing.

Elena turned to Dario. “Who was the courier?”

Dario’s face had become pale. “I receive dozens of deliveries every day.”

“Was he carrying anything for you?”

“A legal packet.”

“Where is it?”

“In my office.”

“Then we will search it.”

“You cannot—”

“I can,” Elena said. “As Vice-Chairwoman, I can authorize an internal security search during an active breach.”

Dario looked toward the other directors for support, but no one met his eyes.

The security chief returned with a tablet.

“We found the courier,” he said. “He entered through the service entrance at 8:07 a.m. He used a temporary identification badge issued by the chairman’s office.”

Dario said nothing.

“Where is he now?” Elena asked.

“According to the cameras, he left through the underground parking level at 8:19.”

“That was before the intruder appeared.”

“Yes.”

“Was he alone?”

The officer hesitated. “The footage is corrupted.”

“Corrupted how?”

“Every camera facing the service corridor lost signal for exactly four minutes.”

Adrian looked at Elena. “That is not a coincidence.”

“No,” she said. “It is an escape route.”

A phone began ringing.

Everyone turned toward Mara.

She reached into her handbag with trembling fingers and pulled out a second phone.

Elena’s eyes narrowed. “Where did you get that?”

“I don’t know,” Mara whispered.

The device continued ringing.

Adrian drew his weapon.

Elena raised one hand, stopping him. “Answer it.”

Mara looked horrified.

“Put it on speaker,” Elena instructed.

Mara pressed the call button.

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then a woman’s voice emerged.

“Good afternoon, Elena.”

The voice was calm, polished, and unfamiliar.

Elena felt a chill move through the room.

“Who are you?”

“Someone who has been watching your rise.”

“Where is Lily?”

A soft laugh came through the speaker.

“Still asking the wrong question.”

Adrian stepped closer to the phone. “If you touch her—”

“You are Adrian Vale,” the woman interrupted. “Predictable, violent, and loyal to the point of weakness.”

His face darkened.

The voice continued. “Elena, you have taken a seat at a table built on betrayal. Do you truly believe the man beside you is the only one protecting you?”

Elena looked at Adrian.

He did not look away.

“What do you want?” she asked.

“To see whether you deserve the position you claimed today.”

“I did not claim it. I earned it.”

“Then prove it.”

The call ended.

A message appeared on the phone.

CHECK THE FOUNDATION.

Elena immediately understood.

“The foundation archives,” she said.

Dario’s expression changed.

“What is stored there?” Adrian asked.

“Original ownership records. Old contracts. Every hidden transfer of authority connected to this company.”

Elena looked directly at the chairman.

“What are you afraid we will find?”

Dario’s silence answered before he could.

At that moment, the security chief received another alert.

“Vice-Chairwoman,” he said, “the residence has responded.”

Elena turned sharply. “What did they say?”

The officer looked at the screen.

“The protection detail is safe. Lily is safe.”

Adrian exhaled, but the relief lasted only a moment.

“There is a problem,” the officer continued. “They found a tracking device attached to the gate.”

Elena looked at the phone in Mara’s hand.

The hidden enemy had not taken Lily.

Not yet.

They had only wanted Elena to understand that they could find her whenever they wished.

She closed the folder in front of her.

“Open the foundation archives,” she ordered.

Dario rose. “You cannot do this.”

Elena met his gaze.

“Today, I became Vice-Chairwoman.”

She walked toward the exit, Adrian beside her.

“Tonight,” she continued, “I find out who built this company on lies.”

And somewhere beyond the tower, the woman with the calm voice listened through a hidden receiver, waiting for Elena to discover that the oldest betrayal was buried beneath the foundation itself.

The foundation archives occupied the oldest part of the Veyra Group headquarters.Unlike the upper floors, with their glass walls and polished metal, the archive level had been built beneath the original building. Its corridors were narrow, its ceilings low, and its walls reinforced with concrete thick enough to withstand an explosion.Dario Veyra walked ahead of Elena with two security officers behind him.“You are making a mistake,” he said.Elena followed at an even pace. “You said that when I ordered the internal audit.”“And when you questioned Victor.”“And when I sat in the Vice-Chairwoman’s seat.”Dario stopped near a steel door. “This archive contains confidential agreements dating back forty years. Some involve governments, banks, and private security firms. If you expose them without understanding their consequences, you could destroy this company.”El

The boardroom doors were locked from the inside.Elena had ordered it before the security team finished removing the broken glass. No one was permitted to leave—not the directors, not the assistants, and not even the legal advisers who had been summoned after the attack. The city continued to move beyond the shattered windows, but inside the room, time had narrowed to the people seated around the table. And the information they were hiding.Adrian stood near the eastern wall, speaking quietly with the security chief. Two guards remained outside the doors while another examined the bullet lodged in the steel frame. The sniper had escaped, but the attack had left behind enough evidence to expose a larger operation.Elena opened the first folder.“Three weeks ago,” she said, “our European contacts received a copy of the South Harbor transport schedule. Two days later, one of our warehouses was raided.”Dario

  • Ashes of My First Life: Enter the Tycoon   The Official Seat

By eight o’clock in the morning, the boardroom had already become a battlefield.Elena stood before the glass wall overlooking the city, her reflection sharp against the pale gold of sunrise. Below, traffic crawled through the streets, unaware that three floors above, powerful men and women were preparing to decide whether she belonged among them.On the table behind her lay the documents confirming her appointment as Vice-Chairwoman of the Veyra Group. The title was official. The danger was not.“Your security team is in position,” Adrian said.He stood near the closed doors, dressed in a dark suit without a tie. He looked calm to anyone who did not know him. Elena knew better. His stillness was the kind that came before violence. She turned toward him. “How many?”“Six inside the building. Four on the adjacent rooftops. Two in the parking structure.”“You sound disappoint

  • Ashes of My First Life: Enter the Tycoon   The Sovereign’s Judgment

The heavy velvet box sat on the scarred mahogany table, its golden crest catching the flickering light from the burning building across the street. The federal courier bowed once more before retreating back into the secure elevator line, leaving a tense silence behind. Outside the shattered windows, the freezing rain poured into the corporate penthouse, but no one in the room felt the cold.Adrian stepped forward, his long, tattooed fingers sweeping over the velvet lid. With a fluid click, the lock snapped open, revealing a heavily encrypted, military-grade satellite drive."Marcus, interface it," Adrian commanded, his deep voice carrying the flat, lethal finality of a sovereign who had just conquered a warzone.Marcus rushed to the secondary terminal, his hands flying across the console. Within seconds, the screen bypassed the encryption, translating the raw data into a shimmering, high-resolution underground map of the city’s international harbor ports.

  • Ashes of My First Life: Enter the Tycoon   The Human Shield

The sharp, high-velocity crack of the sniper bullet echoing through the ninety-story penthouse boardroom was instantly followed by the deafening sound of shattering glass. The bulletproof windows, designed to withstand standard military-grade munitions, had been punctured by an armor-piercing round that left a web of fractures across the massive panels. Shards of crystal rained down on the mahogany table, dancing under the harsh fluorescent lights."Down!" Adrian roared. Before the corporate directors or the elite guards could even react to the sudden breach, Adrian’s towering frame blurred through the air. He did not pull Elena away from the terminal, nor did he drag her to the secure escape chute behind the high-backed leather chairs. He knew with an absolute, chilling certainty that if Elena stepped away from the console now, the global trade embargo would fail, the firewall would close, and Lily’s bounty would remain an active beacon for every assassin
