The Human Shield

last update publish date: 2026-10-18 16:04:00

The sharp, high-velocity crack of the sniper bullet echoing through the ninety-story penthouse boardroom was instantly followed by the deafening sound of shattering glass. The bulletproof windows, designed to withstand standard military-grade munitions, had been punctured by an armor-piercing round that left a web of fractures across the massive panels. Shards of crystal rained down on the mahogany table, dancing under the harsh fluorescent lights.

"Down!" Adrian roared.

Before the corporate directors or the elite guards could even react to the sudden breach, Adrian’s towering frame blurred through the air. He did not pull Elena away from the terminal, nor did he drag her to the secure escape chute behind the high-backed leather chairs. He knew with an absolute, chilling certainty that if Elena stepped away from the console now, the global trade embargo would fail, the firewall would close, and Lily’s bounty would remain an active beacon for every assassin on the planet.

With a fluid, brutal motion, Adrian launched his heavy body directly in front of her, positioning his broad back against the shattered window. He became a living wall of flesh, bone, and reinforced tactical armor.

Bzzzt.

The bright, blood-red laser dot from the sniper scope on the adjacent skyscraper trembled violently as it found its target, locking directly onto the center of Adrian’s chest.

"Adrian, get down! You're in his line of sight!" Elena gasped, her voice tightening with a sudden, suffocating panic that she hadn't felt since her first life. She reached out, her fingers catching the fabric of his blood-stained shirt, trying to yank him out of the kill zone.

"Complete the transmission, Elena," Adrian snarled through his teeth, his jaw locked so tightly that a muscle ticked beneath his sharp jawline. He didn't move an inch. His hands slammed onto the edges of the terminal desk on either side of her hips, pinning her in place, caging her body beneath his own. His dark eyes stared down into hers, burning with an intense, terrifyingly possessive pool of absolute dark worship. "I am the sovereign of the Black Sun. No cheap mercenary bullet can take my life. Focus on the screen!"

"Sir! Ballistic shields are moving up! Return fire on the north coordinates!" Marcus shouted over the chaos, drawing his automatic weapon as a dozen elite Black Sun soldiers sprinted forward, deploying portable, heavy iron shields to block the remaining glass angles.

BANG!

A second high-caliber round slammed directly into the portable ballistic shield Marcus was holding, the concussive force throwing the massive head of security back against the concrete pillar. The sniper was using an anti-material rifle. The portable iron shields were splitting under the force. They had less than thirty seconds before the glass completely failed.

Elena forced her vision away from the red dot on Adrian's chest, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She refused to let his sacrifice be in vain. In her past life, she had been a coward who watched her own world burn. In this life, she was a Vale. She was a mother. She was his queen.

Ignoring the agonizing heat throbbing from the open stitches in her right shoulder, she smashed her fingers against the terminal keys, her movements a desperate, blinding frenzy of tactical execution.

"The European Syndicate is rerouting their defense through a secondary proxy in London," Elena hissed, her teeth gritting as she bypassed the new firewall layers. "They are trying to flood our local server with a localized virus to crash the mainframe. I need ten seconds, Adrian! Just ten seconds!"

"You have all the time you need, wife," Adrian whispered, his voice dropping to a low, seductive rumble despite the impending doom. He leaned down slightly, his lips brushing against her ear, his breath hot against her skin. "The empire is yours to command."

Outside the window, across the dark, rain-swept sky, the sniper adjusted his scope. The laser dot shifted from Adrian’s chest, rising slowly toward the base of his skull—a guaranteed kill shot that would tear through his brain before the body's armor could absorb the impact.

"Elena! Fast!" Victoria Vale barked from the safe corner of the boardroom, her aristocratic face pale as she held her diamond-encrusted cane like a weapon, her guards forming a tight circle around the sleeping Lily in the back cradle.

[VALE-ORTIZ GLOBAL EMBARGO: 85%... 90%... 95%...]

The screen flashed a warning: [EXTERNAL THREAT DETECTED. AUTHORIZE FINAL DECRYPTION SEED].

Elena didn't look at the prompt. She reached up with her left hand, grabbing the back of Adrian's neck, pulling his face down as her right hand slammed into the final enter key on the console.

CHUNK.

[EMBARGO COMPLETED. ALL EUROPEAN SYNDICATE SHORE PORT ACCESS TERMINATED. ASSET LIQUIDATION INITIALIZED.]

At that exact millisecond, a brilliant flash of muzzle fire erupted from the roof of the adjacent building. The sniper had pulled the trigger.

But the bullet never reached Adrian.

A split second before the high-caliber round could shatter the glass, a massive, thunderous explosion rocked the roof of the adjacent skyscraper. The entire upper floor of the mercenary's vantage point erupted into a blinding tower of orange flame, lighting up the Parisian night. Adrian’s hidden Black Sun sniper counter-unit, positioned three floors above the enemy, had fired a heavy rocket-propelled grenade, obliterating the assassin and his rifle into microscopic ash.

The red laser dot vanished from Adrian’s neck, replaced by the faint, drifting embers of the distant explosion floating past the shattered boardroom window.

The heavy room fell into a sudden, breathless silence, broken only by the hum of the server racks and the sound of the rain pouring through the broken glass panels.

Adrian let out a slow, ragged breath, his muscles finally relaxing as he looked down at Elena. The fierce, possessive darkness in his eyes softened into a look of absolute, raw respect. She had done it. She had completely bankrupt the European Syndicate's local assets before their main fleet could even reach the city.

"You did well, Mrs. Vale," Adrian murmured, his hand gently tracing the line of her jaw, his thumb wiping away a smudge of soot from her cheek.

Elena weakly rested her forehead against his chest, her body trembling as the adrenaline began to fade. "We stopped the first wave. But the global bounty is still active on the dark web, Adrian. The embargo only freezes their corporate assets. It doesn't stop the freelance executioners who don't care about trade lines."

Adrian’s lips curled into a cold, predatory smile. He turned his head toward Marcus, who was standing up from the floor, wiping blood from his forehead.

"Marcus," Adrian commanded, his voice echoing with absolute, terrifying dominance. "The corporate war is won. Now, we handle the street execution. Bring me the global satellite tracking log of every freelance hitman who just crossed our digital border. It’s time to show them what happens when the Black Sun hunts."

Marcus tapped his tablet, but before he could speak, the elevator chime rang through the boardroom. The heavy steel doors opened, and a courier in an elite federal uniform walked inside, holding a black velvet box sealed with the high-society crest of the international court.

The courier bowed deeply to Adrian and Elena. "Mr. and Mrs. Vale... a declaration from the Global Court in Europe just arrived. Director Dupre has officially confessed from his cell. But he didn't just implicate Julian Vance. He left a final coordinates log before his device was wiped."

  • Ashes of My First Life: Enter the Tycoon   Beneath the Foundation

The foundation archives occupied the oldest part of the Veyra Group headquarters.Unlike the upper floors, with their glass walls and polished metal, the archive level had been built beneath the original building. Its corridors were narrow, its ceilings low, and its walls reinforced with concrete thick enough to withstand an explosion.Dario Veyra walked ahead of Elena with two security officers behind him.“You are making a mistake,” he said.Elena followed at an even pace. “You said that when I ordered the internal audit.”“And when you questioned Victor.”“And when I sat in the Vice-Chairwoman’s seat.”Dario stopped near a steel door. “This archive contains confidential agreements dating back forty years. Some involve governments, banks, and private security firms. If you expose them without understanding their consequences, you could destroy this company.”El

  • Ashes of My First Life: Enter the Tycoon   The Hidden Hand

The warning remained on the screens for less than ten seconds, but its message had already settled over the room like smoke.TRUST NO ONE.Then the monitors went dark. The prisoner was dragged into the security corridor while the directors stood frozen around the conference table. Some stared at Elena. Others stared at one another, suddenly aware that any face in the room could belong to the enemy.Adrian kept his eyes on the empty elevator.“Seal the floor,” he ordered. The security chief immediately spoke into his radio. “No one enters or exits the executive level. Shut down the elevators and lock the stairwell doors.”“Do not shut down the entire building,” Elena said.Adrian turned toward her. “That man carried detonators into this room.”“He also wanted us to believe the entire building is compromised.”“He may be right.”“Th

  • Ashes of My First Life: Enter the Tycoon   The Leak

The boardroom doors were locked from the inside.Elena had ordered it before the security team finished removing the broken glass. No one was permitted to leave—not the directors, not the assistants, and not even the legal advisers who had been summoned after the attack. The city continued to move beyond the shattered windows, but inside the room, time had narrowed to the people seated around the table. And the information they were hiding.Adrian stood near the eastern wall, speaking quietly with the security chief. Two guards remained outside the doors while another examined the bullet lodged in the steel frame. The sniper had escaped, but the attack had left behind enough evidence to expose a larger operation.Elena opened the first folder.“Three weeks ago,” she said, “our European contacts received a copy of the South Harbor transport schedule. Two days later, one of our warehouses was raided.”Dario

  • Ashes of My First Life: Enter the Tycoon   The Official Seat

By eight o’clock in the morning, the boardroom had already become a battlefield.Elena stood before the glass wall overlooking the city, her reflection sharp against the pale gold of sunrise. Below, traffic crawled through the streets, unaware that three floors above, powerful men and women were preparing to decide whether she belonged among them.On the table behind her lay the documents confirming her appointment as Vice-Chairwoman of the Veyra Group. The title was official. The danger was not.“Your security team is in position,” Adrian said.He stood near the closed doors, dressed in a dark suit without a tie. He looked calm to anyone who did not know him. Elena knew better. His stillness was the kind that came before violence. She turned toward him. “How many?”“Six inside the building. Four on the adjacent rooftops. Two in the parking structure.”“You sound disappoint

  • Ashes of My First Life: Enter the Tycoon   The Sovereign’s Judgment

The heavy velvet box sat on the scarred mahogany table, its golden crest catching the flickering light from the burning building across the street. The federal courier bowed once more before retreating back into the secure elevator line, leaving a tense silence behind. Outside the shattered windows, the freezing rain poured into the corporate penthouse, but no one in the room felt the cold.Adrian stepped forward, his long, tattooed fingers sweeping over the velvet lid. With a fluid click, the lock snapped open, revealing a heavily encrypted, military-grade satellite drive."Marcus, interface it," Adrian commanded, his deep voice carrying the flat, lethal finality of a sovereign who had just conquered a warzone.Marcus rushed to the secondary terminal, his hands flying across the console. Within seconds, the screen bypassed the encryption, translating the raw data into a shimmering, high-resolution underground map of the city’s international harbor ports.
