Chapter 15

The flames suddenly surged higher.

My body began to turn transparent.

"No!" My father rushed onto the altar and reached straight into the fire.

Caleb tried to stop him, but it was too late.

My father's hands plunged into the silver flames.

The sound of flesh burning filled the air. His palms blackened instantly.

The fire only flickered once, then continued burning.

"It's useless," Russ said. "Once the trial begins, it can't be stopped."

"Once the trial begins, it can't be stopped."Caleb drew his sword and began hacking wildly at the chains.Clang! Clang! Clang!Sparks flew everywhere. But the chains didn't move."They won't break!" Caleb shouted. "Why won't they break?""The chains are bound to her soul," Theo said quietly. "If you cut them, you cut her spirit."Caleb froze. He looked down at me.My body had faded enough that the stone altar behind me showed through."Lyla," he whispered, dropping to his knees, voice shaking. "How do I save you?"I looked at him and gently shook my head. There was no saving me.

The second fragment flickered into view. The back mountains.I lay behind a rock, blood pouring from my left leg.Near a patch of glowing moonmoss crouched an adult Stonebeast.I bit down on a strip of cloth and wrapped my wound as best I could. Then I started crawling toward the cliff again. The Stonebeast lunged.I rolled aside and slashed at its eyes with my claws. It roared and staggered back.I dove forward, ripped the moonmoss free, stuffed it into my coat, and ran.The beast chased me.I threw myself into the river and let the current carry me downstream.By dawn, I dragged myself onto the bank, the moonmoss still wet in my arms.I limped back to the pack and went straight to the medical lodge.I asked the healer while holding out the moss, "Will this help internal injuries?"The old healer examined it. "Moonmoss? Where did you get this?""I found it.""We don't have this growing anywhere near the pack grounds," he said, watching me carefully. "It only grows in

"I was just scared," Lucia said, her voice shaking. "I was afraid of losing everything...""So you decided Lyla had to die?" My father's voice trembled."Someone had to!" Lucia screamed. "Why couldn't it be her?"My father closed his eyes."I was wrong," Lucia cried as she dropped to her knees, clutching his legs. "I know I was wrong. Please forgive me. Just this once...""You shouldn't be asking me," my father said quietly. He pulled his leg away."You should ask Lyla."Lucia froze. She turned toward the altar, toward me.My vision was already fading, but I knew she was looking at me."Lyla…" She sobbed, scrambling to her feet and stumbling toward the flames. "I'm sorry. I was wrong. Please forgive me..."She climbed the steps and reached toward me, but the fire burned her hand. She jerked back, crying harder. "Lyla, say something! Tell Dad to forgive me! Please say something!"I opened my mouth, wanting to say something, but no sound came out.The flames had ruined my

The collar tightened again. But this time, the flames didn't immediately pull out another memory.I laughed instead. Blood slipped from my lips as the sound tore out of my throat."Dad," I said, meeting his eyes, "are you scared now?"He didn't answer."Continue," he repeated, his voice cracked and hollow. The flames surged. When the sky lit again, Lucia's smiling face appeared."Lyla," she said, "you're late."The memory played slowly.Everything she had said on the cliff, her tone, her expression, the cold calculation behind her eyes…This time, everyone saw it clearly. The image froze at the moment she fell. There was no fear on her face. Only a satisfied smile. The healer suddenly shouted, "Look at her neck!"All eyes shifted to Lucia's throat.Under the moonlight, a thin silver line glowed faintly along her skin."That's the mark of a Northlands life elixir," the healer said, disbelief thick in his voice. "After drinking it, a silver vein appears along the neck. S

My father's hand pressed hard against the edge of the altar, knuckles pale.He didn't look at anyone. He only stared into the flames."Enough," he suddenly said. His voice sounded raw, almost unrecognizable."Alpha?" Russ turned toward him."I said enough!" My father suddenly lifted his head, eyes bloodshot. "I'm done watching these petty incidents. Show me everything from the three days before the cliff. Replay every moment. I want the truth!""That will tear apart her wolf spirit," Caleb warned, his voice rising. "She'll die instantly!""If she betrayed us, death is deserved." My father's gaze locked onto me. "If she didn't..."He paused."Then this ends today."So he wanted an end to this.I curled inside the flames, a scream trapped in my throat, escaping only as broken breaths. The images began flashing wildly. My stone cabin, the forest, the edge of the training yard, the outer wall at midnight…The memories sped past, too fast to follow. Then suddenly, everything

A patch of sand in the training yard was stained dark with blood.Lucia's scream came first, shaking with panic."Lyla, stop!"Then Caleb's roar followed."Enough!"The memory settled into focus.I stood in the center of the training ground holding a practice sword. Blood dripped from its tip.Lucia had fallen to the ground. A deep wound split her left shoulder, blood flowing steadily through her fingers.Caleb shoved me aside and dropped to his knees beside her.I staggered backward, the wooden sword slipping from my hand and falling into the sand."I-I didn't mean to!" My voice shook.Caleb looked up at me, fury blazing in his eyes. "Didn't mean to? I saw you stab her!""We were sparring!" I said quickly. "She asked me to meet her here. She wanted to test my strength.""Sparring doesn't look like this!" Caleb snapped. "That's a training blade! How hard did you strike?"Lucia opened her eyes weakly in his arms. "Caleb… don't blame Lyla. I'm just not as skilled..."Caleb
