When I wake up, the first thing I see is two burly men staring directly at me.
“Ah!” I let out a shriek of surprise, scrambling back and clutching my bedsheet to my chest–
Wait… bedsheet?
Where am I?
I look around quickly, still feeling panicked and afraid by my unfamiliar surroundings. If I had to guess, I’d say I’m in a hospital, judging by the blinding white lights and the sterile-looking setup. I feel surprisingly well-rested considering, well, everything.
I recognize one of them had those disgusting Moonstone guards ripped to shreds, and threatened that I may be next.
“Please don’t kill me!” I beg frantically, shooting up off the bed and pressing myself into a corner. “Pease, I swear this is all some kind of misunderstanding–”
The lead soldier raises an eyebrow before lifting his hands in a placating gesture. “You won’t be hurt,” he says, voice low and gruff. He tilts his head to one side, then calls out, “Doctor!”
An elderly-looking woman quickly shuffles the room and eases me back into the bed, then presses two fingers against my wrist. I freeze in shock as she takes my vitals, trying to wrap my head around what’s going on.
As I sit still, watching the doctor probe at my skin, the other man leans forward inquisitively. His expression is kindly, soft, almost… familiar.
“I’m Beta Roger,” the soldier from the woods continues. Then he gestures at the other man. “And this is Alpha Liam Calson of the Scarlet pack.”
“The Scarlet pack,” I repeat carefully, doing my best to suppress the sudden fear that rushes through me. “I’m in the Scarlet pack?”
The Scarlet pack and the Moonstone pack are sworn enemies. As an exile of the Moonstone pack… what’s going to happen to me?
“That’s right,” Alpha Liam says in a calm, measured voice.
My breathing becomes rapid and shallow. “I–I’m not a rogue, or a spy, or anything,” I begin desperately. “I just… got lost in your territory’s borders–”
“Calm down,” Alpha Liam says with an easy laugh. “Don’t be afraid. Nothing is going to happen to you here. What kinds of monsters do you take us for? We wouldn’t dream of hurting a pregnant woman.”
The world seems to balance on a knife’s edge.
Did I hear that right?
Pregnant?
“Are… are you sure I’m pregnant?” I ask quietly, hardly daring to speak the word myself.
The doctor nods. “You’ve been unconscious all day,” she says. “I took the time to examine you, confirm the pregnancy, and treat your injuries. You’ve been through quite the ordeal,” she adds. “Thankfully, your pup is fine.”
Tears spring to the corners of my eyes. My pup. Damien’s pup–it’s Damien’s pup that I’m carrying.
My heart begins to ache as the true weight of my situation crashes down on me. I’m in exile, pregnant, and now stuck in the territory of an enemy pack–
And yet they’re not treating me like an enemy.
Why?
“It doesn’t seem like home is a safe place for you, considering some of the injuries we found on you,” Alpha Liam continues kindly. “Or that the pup’s father is much of a man worth running back to. You’re more than welcome to stay here, give birth safely, be taken care of…”
I hesitate. It’s all so much to believe–so much to try and puzzle through. I still can’t quite grasp that I’m pregnant. That I’m going to have a child, Damien’s child.
But I can’t abandon caution just yet.
“I don’t… know what any of this is,” I say quietly.
Alpha Liam nods in sympathy. “Take your time. Think things through. I can hardly begin to imagine what you must have suffered through to get here. Although, if you’re feeling up to it, we have much to speak about.”
A shiver runs down my spine. “We do?”
Alpha Liam turns to the doctor. “Is she in good enough condition to leave?” He asks.
My heart rate begins to quicken, fear surging through me.
“She is,” the doctor replies.
Alpha Liam smiles again, that calm, placating smile. I do my best to match it as he helps me out of bed, then walks me out of the medical room.
We walk in tense silence, and before long I find myself in a grand-looking study. Alpha Liam takes a seat, then gestures for me to do the same. He rummages around his desk for a few moments before pulling out a grainy-looking photo.
“Do you know who these people are?” He asks carefully.
I blink. The photograph shows two people, a man and a woman, sitting in a meadow together. The man has sharp features and stunning green eyes, as well as wavy blond hair. The woman has a kind smile and gold eyes that seem to capture the light–
My mouth falls open in shock.
She looks exactly like me.
“Are these…?” I begin quietly, voice tremulous.
Alpha Liam nods. “Your parents.”
I let out a choked sob, pressing my hand to my mouth as I stare at the photo in shock. After all this time, I never thought I’d know anything about them, much less get to see a photograph–
“Who are they?” I ask, aghast.
Alpha Liam smiles sadly. “Well,” he begins, pointing at the man, “That’s our father. The former Alpha of the Scarlet pack.”
I sit there, stunned. “So you’re–we’re…?”
“Half-siblings,” Alpha Liam confirms. “Our father loved your mother first, but they weren’t fated mates. After an argument, your mother left the Scarlet pack with you as a baby, vowing never to return. Father searched endlessly for any trace of either of you, but all he ever found was your mother’s corpse, right on the border of the Moonstone pack.”
I listen in stunned silence, tears spilling from my eyes as the story washes over me. “She’s gone,” I confirm quietly.
“I really am sorry,” Alpha Liam says gently. “Not long after, our father found his destined mate, my mother, and… well, here I am. He believed you were long gone, but I’d always secretly hoped I’d get the chance to meet my sister. It’s truly a blessing from the Moon Goddess herself that you’ve survived.”
I can hardly keep up with the torrent of thoughts washing over me–the idea of learning about my mother, only to find out she died long before I could ever really know her, the tragedy of what my parents once were…
“And your mother?” I manage to ask, having somewhat regained my composure.
“Dead,” Alpha Liam replies sadly. “Which makes you my only living family. Tell me, how did you manage to survive in the Moonstone pack? I heard that bastard Damien even banished his own Luna.”
“I was adopted by a kind omega family,” I whisper, wiping my eyes as I pray Layla’s family is safe.
Alpha Liam leaned forward, his jaw tight, eyes burning. “Why were the filthy Moonstone guards hunting you? And who is the father of your pup?”
Clara’s POVI can’t believe that just happened. My heart is racing as I rush out of Alpha Damien’s office, silently thanking the Moon Goddess for that opportunity. If Gamma James hadn’t knocked when he did, things might have spiralled out of control. Or. Spiralled even more out of control, I suppose. As I rush back to the maid’s lounge, veins flooded with adrenaline, Damien’s kiss replays in my mind as an endless loop. His breath warm against my neck, that gentle graze of his fingertips, the way every part of me melted into him on pure instinct as he pulled me closer–For a split second, I’d almost given in. I wanted to. Goddess above, I wanted to. Until Marigold had reminded me why I’m really here. ‘You need to complete your mission and get out,’ she urged. ‘Don’t try to go back. Don’t get attached. This can’t last, Clara. Do what you need to do and nothing more.’ She was right, of course, as much as it pains me to admit. Still, as I brush my fingertips along my lips, rememb
Damien’s POV‘How could you?!’My wolf Lucius’ voice reprimands me sharply in my mind, a bitter howl underscoring the words as Anna stares at me like I’m a monster. ‘You fool!’ Lucius continues. ‘If you’re ever going to pull this off, you can’t be losing control like that. And she means too much for you to blow this.’ My heart feels like it’s breaking into a thousand tiny pieces as I look down at Anna, whose face has twisted into an expression of bitter shock and fear. Her lower lip is trembling, eyes wide, and I hate how terrified she looks right now. “I–I’m so sorry,” I say hastily, raising both hands and taking a step back. “I never wanted to–I didn’t mean to…” Anna raises an eyebrow, watching me closely like she’s trying to assess how much of a threat I am right now. “I didn’t mean it!” I blurt out, schooling my expression into one of cool indifference. “I was just so happy to hear you wanted to be my maid again that I got carried away. I’m sorry, Anna..” Anna shakes her hea
Clara’s POV“Excellent.” The word slips past Alpha Damien’s lips smooth as silk, and he smiles as he looks me up and down. “But tell me, Anna. Why the sudden change of heart?” I hesitate. Obviously I can’t tell him I want whatever position makes it easiest for me to drain his heartblood. “Since becoming a maid, I’ve–um–I’ve found… great solace in my work,” I say awkwardly. “And I truly value the friendships I’ve made in this role. Besides, what better work is there than serving my Alpha? Truly, there’s no better vocation out there.” I stare at the ground, unable to look him in the eye as I speak. I can feel Damien’s gaze heavy on me, though, always seeking, always scouring. What does he want from me? “I’m glad to hear it, Anna,” Damien says. He stands up, then, and crosses over to the other side of the desk. Before I can quite process what’s happening he’s right in front of me, that intense stare still boring into me. Damien reaches out slowly, tentatively, deliberately, almos
Clara’s POV“Mind if I sit here?” Rachel’s words pierce through the air cold as ice, and her eyes are gleaming like daggers, eagerly awaiting a response. I clench my jaw. “Not like anyone’s going to stop you.” She shoves her tray in between Layla and I and sits down unceremoniously, lacing her fingers together beneath her chin as she looks me up and down. “You really are ugly,” she says bluntly. “Those scars on your face–not to mention the new ones you’re stuck with now…” her gaze drags along my body, and she smirks. “Just some lowly Omega maid who ended up where she doesn’t belong. I have absolutely no idea how someone as worthless as you could ever manage to deceive Alpha Damien!”“I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about,” I tell her flatly, doing my best to let the words wash right over me.“Sure you don’t,” she spits. “And even despite your cowardly attempts to assassinate our pack’s beloved Alpha, somehow you’re unpunished through it all! More than that, you had A
Clara’s POVWhen I look at Damien, I don’t know what to do with the wave of confusion that floods me. I drugged him. Pressed a knife to his chest. Sunk it into his skin, tried to steal his heartblood–And he doesn’t hate me? He’s not going to kill me. I’m not going to die because of what happened. Is he… misremembering things, somehow? Has he lost his mind? That can’t be possible–the sedative Liam gave me was only supposed to knock him out, it didn't have the potency to cloud his mind. And yet after what I’m sure he’s construing as an assassination attempt, here is he, looking down at me with those wide, warm eyes and asking him if I’ll stay by his side. “Well?” Damien prompts gently with a slight tilt of his head. I do my best to blink my confusion away. “I… I’ll need some time to think about it,” I tell him reluctantly, not wanting him to think I’ve got any ulterior motives. “I’ll try to answer you soon, though.” I don’t really have much choice in the matter. I have to stay fo
Damien’s POVI rush to the hospital as soon as I can, my heart feeling like it’s about to beat out of my chest. I grab Doctor Irwen by the shoulder as I rush through the halls. “Where is she?” I ask frantically. “She’s with Layla in the VIP ward,” Doctor Irwen replies. “In great condition, thankfully. She should make a strong recovery.” “Good,” I breathe out, winding through the halls. When I peer through the window, I can’t help but smile softly at the sight of Clara chatting away with Layla. It fills me with strange nostalgia to see her relaxed–like things are how they used to be, soft and warm and easy. ‘She’s not Clara anymore,’ Lucius reminds me sharply. ‘She’s Anna now. Don’t slip up, or we might lose her again.’ ‘I’m not going to lose her,’ I say firmly. ‘I’m going to be careful this time. I’m going to do this right. Whatever mess she’s tangled up in… I’m going to get her out of it.’ ‘She would never hurt you intentionally,’ Lucius agrees. ‘Someone is controlling her, an
Rachel’s POV‘What do you need Damien for?’James’ voice is reluctant over the mind link, trepidation curling around the edges. I figure I might as well let him know what I’m doing. It’s all going to come to fruition soon, after all. ‘I’m going to seduce him,’ I tell him bluntly. ‘I’ve waited long
Rachel’s POVSomehow, even though it’s been months since Clara’s death, Damien is still completely obsessed with her. And I can’t stand it one bit. Damien and I have been friends since childhood, and since I'm Beta's daughter, we grew up side by side. Me, Damien, and Gamma James–we were always in
Clara’s POVWaking up in the hospital feels like waking up from a nightmare that’s finally broken. “Congratulations! You have a beautiful daughter!” Liam says, a wide smile breaking across his face. “Where is she?” I mumble out, my body still weak from the labour pains of the night before. Jane
Damien’s POV“Elder Claude is awake!” I nearly drop the stack of paperwork I’m flipping through when a guard bursts into my office. My heart stills at the words, a cold sense of numbness washing over me. Elder Claude is awake. Which means…Which means I can finally ask him what really happened t
