Stefan was in his motel room in Port when he read the story in the papers. It was strange. Why would the thief return the ring? It was a statement and he had to know what it meant. His Chief was breathing down his neck about coming back to Laod. There was a lot of work to do.He read through the report in his hand again. “Penny?” The voice came from far off. She squinted her eyes open and shut them almost immediately when the light in the room caused pain to shoot through her head. She wasn’t alone in the room. A small groan escaped her lips. “Take it easy.” A large, warm hand came to rest on her head. What was he doing here? “How do you feel?” She felt like hell but talking felt like too much effort so she just shook her head slowly from left to right. “You should go back to sleep.” She didn’t want to go back to sleep feeling so unguarded. She forced her eyes open and looked into his face. His brows were knit together in a frown and his mouth was set in a grim hard line. “W-What are you doing here?” “I was worried about you,” Noel responded. He climbed into the bed to sit beside her. Penny tried to pull herself up on her elbow but ended up flopping on the bed again so he leaned forward and assisted her, pushing pillows behind her neck to support her head. “I called, but you weren't picking up.”
