DUNCAN

April decided to save Caden.

Watching as she sliced her palm, I rushed over wanting to stop her but I was too late. Damon had warned me about this before. Her blood could finally set him free. She was not just a wolf, she was part witch and part human. She was stronger than any of us and I knew Caden could use this to his advantage.

Slowly, Caden's face started to show some color. His face was still pale but he looked better. Watching her kneel down by his side, letting him drink her blood made me and my wolf uneasy. I didn't like it one bit.

" It's enough. Any more and you will be too weak to fight. What if Kaleric attacks us now?" I asked pulling April away before she had the chance to argue.

Caden smiled as he cleaned his lips. I had stopped her before he could take too much.

"Someone's jealous," Caden mocked as he looked at me.

"She's my mate." I said stepping forward and April pulled me back.

"Duncan, don't mind him." She said trying to ground me. "H

APRIL I was stunned as I saw Caden standing behind me. "My dear April," Caden said as he caressed my head. "I'm very sorry and thankful, darling." "You bastard." I coughed out blood feeling my wolf whining in distress. Duncan's wolf charged forward angrily. I could sense his anger and pain as he lunged himself at Caden. However Caden was stronger. He had the sword with him and my blood.....He didn't seem weak at all. "No!" I screamed as I saw Caden catch Duncan's wolf. I closed my eyes, feeling my magic run through me as I took a deep breath. I could feel everything. The heavy magic in the air and the broken spirits in the ground. I could feel the earth crying beneath my feet, the moon humming above, and the sword calling to me again. The Sword of Nytheris hadn’t abandoned me. My hands trembled as I continued to connect with my magic and my wolf. I let go of the pain, the betrayal, and the fear. I let the power rise. It burned in my veins, fierce and alive. A su

The wind whipped against my face as I sprinted through the trees, branches slashing at my arms. My heart pounded, the dread in my heart coiling tighter with every step. Rowenna’s voice echoed in my mind. "Caden... he tried to protect me." I didn’t wait for the rest. I couldn’t. Magic crackled at my fingertips as I whispered another spell, my bare feet skimming the forest floor faster than any normal wolf or witch should move. The forest blurred around me. Every instinct screamed that I was already too late. Caden. The Vampire King. My unexpected ally. My— I shook the thought from my mind. Now wasn’t the time. Blood. I had seen blood on Rowenna. Too much of it. And if Kaleric had truly left his castle, it meant he was done watching from the shadows. He was making his move. Moon goddess, please. Let him still be alive. I broke through the last line of trees and into the clearing where the witches often gathered. The scent of blood hit me instantly. I skidded to a stop,

The shift tore through me in a rush of heat and pain. My bones cracked, muscles stretched, and silver fur erupted across my skin. My wolf dropped to all fours, my claws digging into the cold earth. My senses sharpened. Every sound, every scent, every heartbeat in the clearing was suddenly crystal clear. Melissa stood in front of me already in her wolf form, her eyes glowing with hatred. Her growl rumbled through the air as she lowered her head, ready to strike. She moved first. She lunged at me with speed, her claws aiming straight for my wolf's face. My wolf dodged, spinning to the side and snapping her jaws at her flank. We collided, teeth and claws tearing into fur and flesh. Pain shot through my shoulder where she bit down hard, but I didn’t stop. My wolf slammed her body into hers, forcing her off balance. We both hit the ground hard. Rolling on top of her, my wolf tried to pin her, but she kicked me off with a powerful swipe. My wolf hit the ground, air knocked from my

The wind bit at my face as I stepped out of the portal. Rowenna and I stood just outside the pack lands, hidden behind a thick row of pine trees. My heart was still pounding from what Caden had said. Melissa was working with Kaleric. That name alone made my blood boil. Every part of me wanted to run straight to Duncan, to shout the truth in his face. But truth without proof was just noise. "I need to see her," I said, my voice low and cold. Rowenna turned to me, her expression unreadable. “And do what, April? Tear her apart in front of the entire pack? That’s exactly what they want. Chaos.” I clenched my fists. “She destroyed everything. My bond with Duncan. My child. She turned everyone against me. And now I know why.” Rowenna looked around cautiously. “We can’t go to Duncan yet. If Melissa and Kaleric really are working together, then they’ve already planted seeds of doubt. If we go in screaming accusations, we’ll lose before the fight even begins.” “Then what do you sugge

" Duncan!" I yelled immediately taking a step forward. Rowenna grabbed my hand making me turn to her. I stared at her elderly eyes and the reality of what had happened made tears gather in my eyes. I had no idea what to do. "Give him some time, April. He needs to figure things out." Rowenna said. My wolf growled at the idea. He was still important to me. I had to explain things to him. " April!" Rowenna shouted again as I took a step forward. "You have duties to tend to." I stopped knowing she was right. I had to find the truth from Caden. I had to know if he was my enemy or lover. " Let's go." Rowenna said as she whispered the spell opening the portal. I turned watching as the portal open. Duncan will have to wait later. The wind shifted as Rowenna’s spell rippled through the air, the shimmering portal flickering. I hesitated at the edge, glancing back one last time. Duncan’s retreating figure haunted my thoughts, his cold voice still echoing in my ears. I had
