The ride back from KAMB was quieter than the ride there.

For a while, no one said much. Then, Mira exhaled long and dramatically enough to count as an event. "I feel spiritually contaminated by official furniture."

Orion did not look up from his phone. "You say that every time we leave a government building."

"And every time, I mean it."

"That is not how contamination works," Kaida said.

"It is how suffering works."

The ride back from KAMB was quieter than the ride there. For a while, no one said much. Then, Mira exhaled long and dramatically enough to count as an event. "I feel spiritually contaminated by official furniture."Orion did not look up from his phone. "You say that every time we leave a government building.""And every time, I mean it.""That is not how contamination works," Kaida said."It is how suffering works."Seris rubbed lightly at her temple. "At least no one tried to confiscate anything.""That's because Lucien looked like he might start a second emergency if they did," Mira said.Lucien, from the seat ahead, did not turn around. "No one was starting anything.""That is technically true," Mira said. "Ending something, maybe."Garrick let out a quiet breath that might have been the beginning of a laugh. "Cross would have deserved it.""Cross," Kaida noted, "was exact

The room did not empty all at once after the general session ended. It thinned in layers.Tempest Choir left first, though not without Elara casting one last openly curious glance toward Aurora's side of the hall. Iron Bastion followed with their usual practicality, Ronan giving Lucien a short nod on the way out that needed no words attached to it. Crimson Banner moved more slowly, irritation visible in nearly every line of Darius Kade's posture now that the private follow-up had been denied to everyone except Aurora and Regulated Order.Mira watched them go with no attempt to hide her satisfaction. "This is healing me," she said."It should not," Seris replied."It does."The room narrowed. What remained was simpler: Aurora Covenant, Regulated Order, Cross, and Cassian. Two KAMB technical staff sat at the side table, quiet and already preparing the restricted record.Aurel and Lyra stayed only long enough to hand over the secondary documentation case and receive a brief instruction f

Once the room settled, the atmosphere changed with it.The friction from a few minutes earlier did not disappear, but it was forced into cleaner shapes—straight backs, folded hands, opened folders, and the quiet, heavy discipline of people who understood that whatever was said here would become part of the official history of the past few weeks.Cross stood at the center desk with the main file open in front of him. Cassian remained near the side table, close enough to hear everything, distant enough to remind the room he was there by value rather than office."This session will proceed by assignment order," Cross said, his voice cutting through the remaining whispers. "Gate rank. Confirmed classification. Encountered entities. Objective. Clear result. Reward declaration follows after."No one objected. Cross looked to the first guild on the list. "Aurora Covenant. First assignment."Lucien did not stand. He did not need to. His voice carried clearly enough from his seat. "A-rank gate

KAMB Central felt different the second time. The first all-guild meeting after the five-gate raids had been tense, rushed, and profoundly uncertain. Everyone had still been adjusting to the jarring reality that gates were real, survivable, and no longer rare enough to dismiss as isolated disasters. That meeting had been about reporting what happened. This one felt heavier. Because now, everyone in the room knew more. They knew more about gates, more about rewards, and more about each other. And they knew much more about Aurora Covenant. The conference hall was already prepared when Aurora arrived. Guild placards had been arranged in a clean, clinical arc facing the main screen. KAMB personnel stood near the walls with the stiff, disciplined stillness of people who wanted the room controlled before anyone important sat down. The lighting was bright without being warm, and the polished floor reflected far too much. It was the kind of room built to make every word feel official.Aurora e

The second-floor common room had settled into a working quiet. It wasn't restful, exactly, but it was functional. Coffee had long since replaced sleep as the primary fuel. The table was crowded with copied notes, sealed folders, and the neat, daunting spread of numbers Kaida had insisted be checked twice—even though everyone in the room knew she had already checked them five times. Then, one wall screen lit up. Orion looked over first. "KAMB."The word pulled the room straighter. He tapped the accept command. The screen flickered once, then resolved into a formal conference feed.Adrian Cross stood at the center of the frame in one of KAMB's internal conference rooms. His expression was as hard and controlled as ever, one hand resting against the table in front of him. Cassian Verity was there too, seated off to the side rather than taking the lead. Cross spoke first. "Aurora Covenant."Lucien set his cup down and faced the screen fully. "Director Cross.""There will be a general rev

Aurora did not wake up gracefully. They woke in pieces, in odd places, tucked under borrowed blankets, with the second-floor common area looking less like a prestigious guild headquarters and more like the aftermath of a minor domestic collapse. Mira was face-down on the couch, one arm dangling off the side as if she'd been mid-reach for something when her consciousness finally gave out. Kairos had somehow managed to fall asleep perfectly upright in the armchair. Kaida was half-buried in the corner of the sofa, her tablet still resting on her chest like a protective slab of tech.Orion, of course, was already awake.Lucien emerged from his room late enough to count as tragic. He took one long, slow look around the wreckage of the common area and sighed. "We look terrible."Mira lifted her head exactly one inch. "Speak for yourself.""You're drooling on the couch.""That," she muttered, dropping her head back down, "is between me and the couch."Garrick, already on his feet, handed Luc
