HE KILLED HIM.

A heavy silence hung in the air, thick and suffocating. The weight of Ryan’s voice had sent shockwaves through the room, shattering the heated haze that had consumed Lucas and Ash just moments ago.

Lucas scrambled first, the shock jerking him into motion. He pushed Ash off him, hastily reaching for his trousers, his fingers fumbling with the fabric as he struggled to pull them back on. His breaths were short and uneven, panic setting in.

Ash wasn’t far behind. She grabbed her dress from the floor, hastily slipping it over her shoulders. Her hands trembled as she zipped it up, eyes darting toward Ryan, whose expression remained unreadable—stunned, frozen in place, his fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

The groceries lay scattered on the floor, cans rolling across the polished tiles, their echoes cutting through the tension like a knife. Ryan hadn’t moved, hadn’t spoken another word. He simply stood there, staring at them as though his mind refused to process the betrayal before him.

Lucas was the first to break the silence. He swallowed hard, taking a cautious step forward, hands raised in a pacifying gesture. "Ryan… it's not what you think." His voice wavered, cracking under the pressure.

Ryan’s eyes flickered, dull with disbelief yet simmering with something dangerous beneath the surface. His chest rose and fell heavily, his breaths labored as if he were holding back a raging storm inside him.

And then, Lucas staggered.

A sudden wave of dizziness struck him, his vision blurring. He gripped the edge of the couch for support, his body swaying slightly. Confusion clouded his face. "Wha… what’s happening?" He barely got the words out before his knees buckled.

But Ryan saw nothing else.

All he saw was betrayal.

His brother. His own blood.

With her.

Rage exploded inside him like a dam breaking loose. He lunged forward, his body moving faster than his thoughts. A fist flew, connecting hard with Lucas’s jaw, sending him stumbling back.

Lucas groaned, trying to steady himself, but Ryan was relentless. Another punch came, landing in his stomach, knocking the wind out of him. Lucas coughed, gasping, but he was too weak, his body still reeling from the sudden dizziness.

Ryan grabbed him by the collar, eyes wild with fury. "How could you?" he spat through gritted teeth before driving his fist into Lucas’s ribs. Lucas grunted in pain, crumpling to the floor.

He tried to push himself up, but Ryan didn’t stop. He couldn’t stop.

Another punch. Then another. And another.

Ash gasped, backing away, but she didn’t intervene. Her wide eyes darted between the two men, her lips slightly parted, as if calculating her next move.

Lucas groaned again, his body barely able to keep up with the blows. His vision swam, his breath shallow. He tried to lift a hand, a feeble attempt to shield himself, but Ryan's next strike was the final one—brutal, unrestrained.

A sickening crack echoed through the room.

Lucas’s body went limp.

His head lolled to the side, eyes dull, lifeless. Blood pooled beneath him, staining the pristine floor.

Ryan stepped back, panting, his fists still clenched, knuckles dripping with blood. His chest heaved, his pulse roaring in his ears. The room tilted around him, his anger evaporating as the reality of what he had done settled in.

Lucas wasn’t moving.

He wasn’t breathing.

A deep, suffocating silence swallowed the space.

Then—

BANG!

The door burst open, slamming against the wall as armed officers swarmed inside.

"Hands in the air! Now!"

Ryan barely registered the shouts, his ears ringing. The world felt distant, muted. He was still staring at Lucas’s lifeless form, still trying to grasp the irreversible truth.

And then, a sound cut through the chaos.

A sob.

Ash.

She collapsed to the floor, wailing, her hands clutching at her dress as tears streaked her face. "Oh my God!" she cried, her voice cracking. "He killed him! He killed his own brother!"

Ryan’s head snapped toward her, his bloodied hands trembling.

What?

Ash turned to the officers, her body shaking as she pointed a trembling finger at Ryan. "It—it was out of anger," she gasped between sobs. "They had a small fight earlier, but—but I never thought he'd go this far!"

Ryan’s breath caught.

No.

No, that wasn’t what happened.

She was lying.

He looked at her, his mind scrambling, searching for the woman he had once trusted, the woman he had loved. But all he saw now was a stranger.

Her lips quivered, her eyes filled with carefully crafted terror. "He's been aggressive," she whispered, as if ashamed to say it. "He—he’s hit me before. I tried to stop him, but—" A fresh sob wracked her body as she covered her face, shoulders trembling.

The officers exchanged glances.

Ryan took a step forward, his voice hoarse. "Ash…?"

She looked up at him then, her tear-streaked face contorted with anguish, but in her eyes, beneath the surface of her grief, he saw something else.

Cold calculation.

Ryan’s stomach twisted.

The weight of his own blood coated his hands.

The betrayal he felt before paled in comparison to the one unfolding now.

He had lost everything.

And now, he was going to pay for it.

  • BENEATH THE LIES    AND I WOULD DIE BEFORE I LET ANYONE HARM HER.

140 STANLEY'S POVWhen Marcus spoke about getting me to safety and coordinating with law enforcement, something inside me snapped. I turned to him with a glare that could have melted steel."Are you out of your fucking mind?" I snarled. "They just took Alora. They have my wife, Marcus. Get in the car. Now."Marcus opened his mouth to argue, probably to give me some tactical advice about proper procedure and waiting for backup, but I wasn't interested in hearing any of it."I am not going to let them run away with my bride," I said, my voice carrying a tone of finality that left no room for discussion. "Either you drive, or I drive myself, but we're following that van right now."Marcus must have recognized something in my expression—the desperation of a man who had lost everything that mattered to him and was willing to risk everything to get it back. Without another word of protest, he climbed behind the wheel of our SUV while I threw myself into the passenger seat. The engine roare

  • BENEATH THE LIES    THEY HAD TAKEN EVERYTHING THAT MATTERED TO ME.

139CHLOE'S POVThe sight of my Charles's blood spreading across the marble floor beneath him hit me like a blow to the chest. Charles—my only family, the one person in this world who truly understood what we'd both endured—was lying motionless with a gunshot wound to his stomach, his life bleeding away in front of hundreds of horrified wedding guests.Every instinct I possessed screamed at me to run to him, to drop to my knees beside him and try to stop the bleeding, to scream for medical help, to do something, anything, to save the only person I had left in this world. But I couldn't move. I couldn't even breathe properly. If I revealed myself now, if I threw off this mask and rushed to Charles' side calling his name, I would expose not only my own presence at this wedding but also his elaborate deception. The authorities would immediately realize that the man bleeding on the floor wasn't Stanley Richardson at all, which would raise questions I had no idea how to answer. So I remain

  • BENEATH THE LIES    WHAT THE HELL HAD JUST HAPPENED?

138 ALORA'S POV I had just finished saying my vows, my voice trembling with emotion as I promised to love Stanley Richardson for the rest of my life. Watching him deliver his own vows with such passion and conviction had filled me with overwhelming joy, despite all the chaos that had surrounded our relationship in recent weeks. When Pastor Williams stepped forward to deliver the traditional announcement—"If there is anyone here who knows of any reason why this couple should not be joined in holy matrimony, speak now or forever hold your peace"—I had felt a flutter of nervous anticipation mixed with relief that we were so close to becoming husband and wife. Then everything exploded into absolute chaos. The thunderous boom seemed to come from everywhere at once, shaking the entire hotel structure like an earthquake. I felt the vibrations through the floor of the altar platform, watched in horror as the elegant crystal chandeliers swayed violently overhead before several of them c

  • BENEATH THE LIES    IT WAS TIME TO TAKE A BRIDE OUT OF HER OWN WEDDING.

137 STANLEY'S POV The SUV raced through the city streets at breakneck speed, weaving between traffic as Marcus coordinated our desperate mission to save my wedding from whoever had orchestrated this elaborate deception. My hands were clenched into fists in my lap, every muscle in my body tense with the urgency of what we were facing. Marcus had his phone pressed to his ear, speaking in urgent, clipped tones to one of our security team members who was stationed at the St. Regis Hotel. I could only hear one side of the conversation, but from Marcus's increasingly frustrated expression, it wasn't going well. "Listen to me carefully, Rodriguez," Marcus said, his voice taking on the commanding tone he used when lives were at stake. "The man standing on that stage with the bride is not Stanley Richardson. It's an imposter who orchestrated Mr. Richardson's kidnapping in order to steal his identity and marry his fiancée." There was a pause while Rodriguez responded, and I could see Marc

  • BENEATH THE LIES    THIS IS GOING TO BE EASIER THAN TAKING CANDY FROM A BABY.

136 STANLEY'S POVWhen we all turned toward the source of the gunshot, my heart nearly stopped at what I saw standing in the doorway. It was the man who had betrayed me earlier—the fake Marcus who had lured me to this abandoned warehouse with threats against Alora and her mother."you," the real Marcus said grimly, his voice filled with recognition and barely contained rage. "This is the bastard who impersonated me and locked me away so he could take my place."I stared at the man who had been instrumental in destroying what should have been the happiest day of my life. Hunter stood in the doorway with a pistol pointed directly at my chest, his expression cold and professional. There was something almost casual about the way he held the weapon, like this was just another day at the office for him."So you're the reason Marcus wasn't with me when I left the mansion this morning," I said, pieces of the puzzle finally clicking into place. "You tied him up somewhere so you could take his

  • BENEATH THE LIES    HAD JUST FIRED A WEAPON.

135ALORA'S POVAs my mother walked me down the aisle with the traditional wedding march playing softly in the background, I should have been experiencing the most magical moment of my life. The guests had all risen to their feet in honor of the bride, their faces turned toward me with expressions of admiration and celebration. Camera phones captured every step, every smile, every graceful movement of my dress as it flowed behind me like liquid starlight.Yet despite the beauty of the moment, I felt a persistent uneasiness settling deep in my chest like a cold stone. Some people in the crowd were giggling softly among themselves, probably commenting on how beautiful I looked with my elaborate makeup and stunning dress. Others showed genuine concern and warmth in their expressions, clearly moved by what they believed was a fairy-tale romance coming to its perfect conclusion. But I couldn't shake the memory of what had happened outside the hotel, the aggressive questioning from reporter
