“Yes, Sir Marcus?” Celeste responded, glancing at Pauline—who, upon hearing the voice on the line, had clapped a hand over her mouth and was now giggling softly, obviously thrilled.

“I got your number from the index card,” Marcus explained.

He didn’t need to say that—she hadn’t even asked. But it was as if Marcus had read her mind, because that was exactly what she’d been wondering ever since he introduced himself on the call. The index card he was referring to was the one they submitted during the second day of class, which included a one-by-one ID photo, personal details, and their phone number.

“Alright, Sir,” she replied simply.

“I called because I saw your index card was blank. You know what I mean, don’t you?”

There was no trace of anger or even mild irritation in Marcus’s tone. Still, for some reason, Celeste suddenly felt her throat go dry. She instinctively swallowed, her chest tightening all at once. She was nervous—and she didn’t quite know why.

“Hello? Miss Montemayor?” Ma

And then there was the undeniable fact of his looks. She had been too proud to admit it before, brushing off Pauline’s teasing, but Marcus was undeniably handsome. There was a quiet strength in his features, an effortless confidence that drew people’s attention. His charisma wasn’t superficial or forced—it was real and magnetic. Celeste knew she had to stop pretending it wasn’t there, even if she wasn’t ready to fully accept what that meant for her.Celeste was used to handsome men—there were plenty of them back in America, as she had mentioned before. But Marcus was different. His presence was something she couldn’t quite put into words. It was like an invisible force pulling her in, a magnetic energy that made it impossible to look away. She felt drawn to him in a way that went beyond simple attraction, and no matter how much she tried to rationalize it, she couldn’t explain why or how this connection was so strong.Class had finally ended, and since it was their last subject for th

“I haven’t heard anything about her either, hija. Your grandfather also forbade me from speaking with anyone close to Marcus or to you,” Eva replied softly. Her tone carried the same restraint Celeste had grown used to from everyone around her—measured, cautious, as if even their words could shatter something fragile. But there was something else beneath her words, something Celeste couldn’t ignore: regret. Eva, who had been more than just a housekeeper—more like a second mother—sounded like she, too, had been bound by this unspoken oath of silence. And though she never disobeyed, Celeste could hear it in her voice: she wished things had been different.“It’s been so long,” Celeste said. “Ten years now. Maybe even just a casual—” But she couldn’t bring herself to finish the sentence. Because she knew it was just a dream. A lofty dream that felt too far out of reach. That was why, even though she herself had just admitted it had already been ten years, she still couldn’t see any cert

PRESENT DAYThe sudden halt of the car at a red light jolted Celeste from her thoughts, dragging her back into the present. She released a deep sigh, heavy with longing and memories that refused to stay buried. Her gaze drifted outside the window, but her mind wandered elsewhere—searching for traces of a friendship that once meant the world to her. Where could Pauline be now? she wondered. Pauline wasn’t just a friend; she was once her safe haven, someone who understood her without the need for explanations. Along with Manang Eva, Pauline had been one of the few people Celeste could rely on during her most vulnerable moments. Yet somehow, without warning or clear reason, they had drifted apart—pulled away by invisible forces and unspoken misunderstandings that left no closure behind.A stabbing ache throbbed in her chest as she recalled something Ismale had said to her long ago—a few words that had lodged themselves deep within her like shards of glass. It wasn’t just the memory of Pa

“Ah, and when you ask questions, you sound like an investigator,” Celeste replied, still trying to hold back a grin. But instead of dodging the question entirely, she paused for a second, thoughtful. “Why are you so obsessed with my love life anyway?” she said lightly, hoping the change in tone would make Pauline drop the topic. But judging from the mischievous twinkle in her friend’s eyes, she knew she wasn’t off the hook yet. Pauline had found something intriguing, and Celeste could already tell this wasn’t going to be the last time she’d have to explain—or deny—her feelings about a certain charming professor.Celeste heard Pauline sigh dramatically, the kind of theatrical sigh meant to make a point. Then, with exaggerated flair, Pauline closed the book in front of her and turned fully to face her. The shift in her posture alone signaled that she wasn’t letting this go anytime soon. “Just answer my question,” she insisted, eyebrows raised with mock impatience. “Because earlier—don’t

Celeste laughed despite herself, her voice lighter than her mood. “I didn’t do it on purpose. Algebra followed by another boring subject? Of course I’d get sleepy!” she said, flicking her pencil across her sketchpad as if trying to shake the memory off. “Why would I deliberately fall asleep in class? I’ve always been like that, even before,” she added, forcing a smile as she shifted her focus back to the unfinished pearl earring sketch. But her hand paused mid-line. No matter how much she tried to distract herself, the irritation had already settled in her chest like a stubborn knot. She tried to pin the blame on Pauline’s endless teasing, but deep down, she knew better. It wasn’t just about the banter or the conversation. Something about the interaction with Marcus—or the lack of it—had left a taste she couldn’t quite name. There had been nothing significant about it. A simple question. A passing glance. And yet, it lingered longer than it should have. Her pencil stayed still on the
