“Oh, why do you look so sleepy?” Pauline asked as soon as she saw Celeste the next morning in their classroom.

Their first class wasn’t actually that early—it was at ten in the morning. But Celeste had stayed up late the night before because she had been busy preparing her presentation for Sir Marcus’s class.

“I went to bed late last night because I finished the presentation for Sir Marcus’s subject,” she admitted, then let out an uncontrollable yawn.

Pauline sat down and replied, teasingly, “Looks like the tide is finally turning, huh?”

Celeste immediately froze. She knew exactly where Pauline was going with that comment, but since she wasn’t in the mood for teasing today, she chose to pretend she didn’t hear anything. Honestly, she was just getting tired of constantly defending herself because Pauline never seemed to believe her.

“But you’re lucky because Sir Marcus is kind and gave you a chance.”

When she remained silent, she heard Pauline say this again as she flipped through the

“That’s good to hear. I’m sure your grandfather will be pleased to hear those words from you,” Mang Damian said warmly, a genuine smile spreading across his face. His tone carried a mix of pride and relief, as if he could sense that Celeste was beginning to open up and embrace her new environment. Celeste felt a small flicker of comfort in his words, knowing that her grandfather’s approval meant a lot not only to him but also to her. The simple affirmation from Mang Damian made the long journey feel a little lighter, as if the weight of her worries had momentarily lessened. The trip from SJU to the mansion took about an hour, the roads winding through familiar neighborhoods and stretches of greenery. Because they had to drop off Pauline along the way, the travel time stretched a bit longer than usual, giving Celeste more moments to reflect quietly. She chose to keep herself occupied by gazing out the window, watching the scenery blur past—trees swaying gently in the breeze, cars movi

For a moment, silence seemed to pass between the two of them. Celeste had nothing to say, while Marcus appeared momentarily preoccupied with something on his laptop.“Okay,” Marcus finally said, breaking the short but deafening silence. “As I have said, I want to give you a chance,” he continued, locking his gaze directly onto her eyes.Celeste didn’t respond. But in her mind, a side comment formed—the way he said that, it’s like I owe him something big. And she couldn’t exactly deny that there was truth in that.“I want you to prepare a presentation. I think you can manage it by the day after tomorrow,” Marcus said, his tone surprisingly considerate. And even if she had a history of annoyance toward him, she had to admit—she appreciated this gesture. Something that, if Pauline ever found out, would surely lead to endless teasing from her best friend.“What topic, Sir Marcus?” she asked in return.Even though Celeste was looking straight into Marcus’s deep, dark eyes, she still wasn’t

“Yeah, that’s totally fine. But if you can’t stay with me, that’s okay too. No problem,” Celeste said, her voice soft but steady. She offered Pauline a reassuring smile, hiding the slight nervousness bubbling in her chest. She didn’t want to impose or make her friend feel obligated, so she chose her words carefully—light, calm, understanding. It was her way of saying she’d be okay either way, even though a part of her quietly hoped Pauline would stay. It wasn't just about company; it was about not feeling alone in that exact moment, in that exact place.Pauline glanced down at her wristwatch, the silver dial catching the light as her brows slightly furrowed. She hesitated for just a second before nodding. “Alright, just make sure you drop me off, okay?” she replied, her tone casual but considerate. There was a subtle warmth in her voice—like she understood what Celeste wasn’t saying outright. She reached into her bag and fished out her phone, her fingers quickly moving across the scre

“Yes, Sir Marcus?” Celeste responded, glancing at Pauline—who, upon hearing the voice on the line, had clapped a hand over her mouth and was now giggling softly, obviously thrilled.“I got your number from the index card,” Marcus explained. He didn’t need to say that—she hadn’t even asked. But it was as if Marcus had read her mind, because that was exactly what she’d been wondering ever since he introduced himself on the call. The index card he was referring to was the one they submitted during the second day of class, which included a one-by-one ID photo, personal details, and their phone number.“Alright, Sir,” she replied simply.“I called because I saw your index card was blank. You know what I mean, don’t you?”There was no trace of anger or even mild irritation in Marcus’s tone. Still, for some reason, Celeste suddenly felt her throat go dry. She instinctively swallowed, her chest tightening all at once. She was nervous—and she didn’t quite know why.“Hello? Miss Montemayor?” Ma

And then there was the undeniable fact of his looks. She had been too proud to admit it before, brushing off Pauline’s teasing, but Marcus was undeniably handsome. There was a quiet strength in his features, an effortless confidence that drew people’s attention. His charisma wasn’t superficial or forced—it was real and magnetic. Celeste knew she had to stop pretending it wasn’t there, even if she wasn’t ready to fully accept what that meant for her.Celeste was used to handsome men—there were plenty of them back in America, as she had mentioned before. But Marcus was different. His presence was something she couldn’t quite put into words. It was like an invisible force pulling her in, a magnetic energy that made it impossible to look away. She felt drawn to him in a way that went beyond simple attraction, and no matter how much she tried to rationalize it, she couldn’t explain why or how this connection was so strong.Class had finally ended, and since it was their last subject for th
