My hands were shaking.

The message kept replaying in my mind, a gun to my mother's head, haunted every second I tried to breathe.

And Aurora. That wicked smirk she gave me across the room. She wasn't even trying to hide it.

I couldn't stop myself. I walked down the steps slowly.

I didn't feel my legs moving, I just knew I had to get to her. People were staring, whispering, confused. Some guests stood, others pulled out their phones, murmuring things I couldn't hear.

My feet dragged along the floor until I reached her row.

She looked up at me with that same calm, polished face. Her legs crossed. Like she hadn't just threatened my mother's life. I grabbed the neckline of her dress and pulled her up.

"Where is she?" I cried, voice cracking. "Where is my mother?! Why do you have my mother? What's your connection with her?”

Gasps rippled through the crowd. A woman dropped her champagne glass behind me. I didn't look back. I couldn't.

Aurora yanked my hand free from her dress and shoved me

  • BETRAYAL: The Day I Died.   Chapter 64

I lay on the bed with my eyes wide open, staring at the ceiling as if the cracks and faint lines above me could give me the answers I had been searching for. The house was quiet, too quiet, and yet my head wouldn’t stop buzzing. So much has changed since I came back. Sometimes I wondered if I had really been ready to return at all, or if I had only forced myself because of Daisy. Nothing felt steady anymore. Everything around me kept shaking, pulling me in different directions until I felt I might collapse.I thought about how Benjamin and I had been separated, how the DNA report had crushed us both, and how the years we lost still haunted me. And then the truth came out, that everything we went through had been a mistake, that we had suffered all that pain for nothing. For five years, I had carried a wound in my chest that never healed, only to find out it was built on a lie. Coming back to him was supposed to feel like relief, like being whole again. But instead, it felt like walkin

  • BETRAYAL: The Day I Died.   Chapter 63

It had been a few days since the police last came to the house. Those days dragged like heavy stones tied to my ankles. Every time I heard a car pull up or footsteps outside, I thought they were back, ready to knock on the door and take me away.Tonight was no different. My nerves were still raw, stretched thin like a rope about to snap. I tucked Daisy into her bed, smoothing her blanket over her tiny frame. She rolled to her side, hugging her stuffed bear, her lips parting with that soft breathing she always made when sleep started to pull her in.I sat there for a while, staring at her face. My chest ached at how peaceful she looked, how far away she seemed from the mess I was drowning in. I bent down, kissed her forehead, and whispered, “Goodnight, baby.”When I walked out of her room and closed the door gently, I found Benjamin standing there in the hallway. His tie was loose around his neck, his shirt sleeves rolled up. He looked tired but serious. His eyes caught mine, and I alr

“Umm… yes, that’s what you told me,” I said, my voice softer than I meant it to be. It felt like my throat was closing in, every word scraping out as if I had swallowed sand. The officer across from me leaned forward, his dark eyes steady. “Did you do anything?”For a second, my world stopped. The words slammed into me like a heavy weight. My palms went clammy, and a sharp heat spread through my chest. My mind was on fire, every thought flashing at once. Could he see through me? Could he tell? Before I could even open my mouth, Benjamin’s voice cut through the silence. “Mind the kind of questions you ask, officer.” His tone was cold, controlled, but I saw the way his hand tightened around the armrest of the couch. The officer’s head turned slowly toward him. “It’s all part of the investigation, Mr. Grey.” His voice didn’t rise, but the firmness in it made the room feel smaller.I tried to sit still, but my heart was pounding so loudly I was sure it echoed in the room. My chest rose an

He ended the call quickly, sliding his phone into his pocket as he walked toward me. His face looked guilty, his voice calm but strained.“Hey, it’s not what you think,” Benjamin said, his hand reaching slightly toward me as if he could soften the moment.I felt my chest tighten. My stomach was still turning from what I had overheard. The words slipped out of me sharp and fast, “What is your problem with him? Why do you want to know about him when I already told you we are just friends?”His jaw moved as if he was holding back. “I’m not doing this because I feel like you have something else going on,” he said carefully. “I’m doing it because I told you I feel like I know him from somewhere, and I have a bad feeling about it. That was the reason I asked about his information, just to be safe.”I let out a bitter laugh and rolled my eyes. “You’re doing too much. And I don’t like it.” My voice shook, not because I doubted myself, but because anger burned inside me. Before he could say an

Benjamin and I hadn’t spoken since the fight. The silence between us was heavier than any words. Even during dinner, it felt like we were two strangers sitting across from each other, just moving food around our plates. Daisy tried to brighten the table with her little giggles and stories, but even she could sense something was wrong. She kept looking between us, waiting for one of us to break the tension, but neither of us did. After dinner, I took Daisy upstairs. I placed her into bed, smoothing her blanket over her small body, and kissed her forehead. She whispered, “Goodnight, Mommy,” before rolling over with her iPad still clutched in her hands.I stood there for a moment, staring at her little face in the dim light. Guilt pricked at me, she was not supposed to see the tension between Benjamin and me. Even though she is still a child, I’m sure she understood the silence.Later, after my bath, I pulled on my nightdress and sat on the edge of my bed. I was tired, but my mind wouldn

I pulled away from the hug, my arms falling awkwardly to my sides. My chest felt tight as I turned toward Benjamin. His eyes were sharp, burning with a heat I rarely saw in him.He took slow, deliberate steps toward us, his jaw clenched so hard I could almost hear his teeth grind. His voice was low but edged with fury.“What the hell is going on here?”My throat dried. I glanced at Dennison, hoping he would understand the storm gathering behind Benjamin’s glare. Before I could form a single word, Dennison lifted his hands casually, like he had nothing to hide.“I asked her for a hug,” Dennison said, his tone steady but laced with arrogance. “It was nothing deep, chill man.”The words only fanned the fire. In one swift move, Benjamin grabbed Dennison by the collar, pulling him so close their foreheads nearly touched.“You son of a bit—”“Benjamin!” My voice cut through the air before he could finish. “Children are here,” I said calmly. The reminder landed. His eyes flicked to Daisy, wi
