POV: MIKE

She called two days later. Not to argue, which surprised me more than I wanted to admit.

"Fine," she said. No greeting, straight in, like she'd rehearsed the word until it stopped tasting like surrender.

"I'll look at your materials. My rate stands. I choose the scope."

"Understood."

"And Mike." A pause, just long enough to matter. "This doesn't mean I like you."

"I never assumed it did."

She hung up before I could say anything else. I told myself the small satisfaction I felt was just the deal closing, nothing more. I didn't examine why I sat there smiling at my phone for ten seconds after, alone in my office, with no one to perform for.

I saw her again four nights later, at a fundraiser I would've skipped if Isabelle hadn't personally called to remind me the Laurent name was on the invitation. Smaller gallery than the wine-incident one. The kind of room that felt like someone's living room instead of a benefit for the arts council.

She stood near the back wall in a dark green dress, glass of something pale in her hand, laughing.

Not at me, at a man beside her. Tall, easy smile, the kind of practiced charm that came from years of knowing exactly how to work a room. He said something and she laughed again, head tipping back, and touched his arm briefly and casually. The kind of touch with no weight behind it at all.

I didn't know why my jaw had gone tight.

"You're staring, At Elena Martinez talking to Lucas Bennett. Who represents her work. Who is, as far as I can tell, entirely uninterested in you right now, which is presumably why you look like you're calculating his net worth." Adrian said, materializing beside me with two glasses of champagne, handing me one I hadn't asked for. "

" Dude, I'm not calculating anything."

"Your jaw is visibly tight looking at them. The expensive-lawyer jaw. I've seen it twice once during the Hartwell deal, and right now."

I made myself look elsewhere. The stage, the microphone stand someone was setting up. Anything that wasn't the sound of her laugh carrying across the room. It didn't help. Some traitorous part of me was still listening for it.

"He's her art dealer," Adrian said, unhelpfully patient, enjoying this far too much. " Probably a professional relationship. Unless you'd like me to go ask, in which case I absolutely will, because this is the most entertaining you've been in months."

"You'll do no such"

"Too late. I'm bored, and you're being weird about a woman you claim is just a consultant."

He was already moving, weaving toward them with the confidence of a man who'd never once worried about walking into a conversation uninvited.

I watched him go. Watched him say something that made both of them laugh. Watched Elena's eyes flick past his shoulder to find me across the room, watched something shift in her face, not quite a smile, close enough to a smile, like she knew exactly what he'd been sent to fish for.

She excused herself and crossed the room toward me directly, which I hadn't expected and, apparently, wasn't ready for.

"Your friend," she said, arriving in front of me, glass still in hand, "just asked Lucas if he was, and I quote, 'in the market.' I'd like to know what that means before I decide whether to be offended."

"No idea what he's talking about."

"You're a terrible liar for a man who negotiates for a living."

"I negotiate facts. Lying's a different skill."

I found myself watching her mouth as she spoke, the small unimpressed tilt of it, and had to redirect my own attention before it got obvious. "Lucas Bennett. Your dealer."

"My dealer or my friend. Neither's your business, but yes, since you're clearly working yourself into something about it."

She took a slow sip, watching me over the rim of the glass, somewhere between amused and testing. "Were you jealous, Mr. Laurent?"

"I don't get jealous."

"That wasn't a no."

"It was implied."

"Implications aren't facts. You taught me that yourself, in an elevator. Less than a week ago."

She was smiling properly now, and it did something uncomfortable to my chest, a pressure I didn't have a name for and didn't especially want one for.

"You should work on your lies. Your jaw does a thing. Adrian mentioned it, apparently, right before he came over to torment Lucas on your behalf."

I didn't answer. I couldn't, not without confirming something I wasn't ready to confirm, standing three feet from her while a room full of people suddenly felt very far away.

She held my gaze a beat too long. The noise around us, the quartet, the clinking glasses seemed to drop into some lower register, dimming into something distant and unimportant.

I found myself looking at her mouth again, the small unimpressed curve of it, wondering with a clarity that unsettled me more than any boardroom ever had exactly what it would feel like to kiss her and finally wipe that expression clean off her face.

POV: ELENA His fingers were warm against my jaw. Neither of us moved. The whole world had narrowed to that small gap between us and the sound of my own pulse hammering in my throat. Then the elevator lurched. Hard Metal groaning below us, the car dropping an inch before catching itself and climbing again. Mike's hand pulled back like he'd touched something hot. I scrambled up off the floor, putting as much distance as the small box allowed, my heart still slamming, different reasons now, or maybe the same one wearing panic as a disguise."It's moving," I said, uselessly, since we could both feel it."It's moving," he agreed, voice rougher than before, already straightening above the gap, already folding whatever had slipped loose back into its box.The doors opened on forty-two with a small innocent chime, like nothing had happened. Like the last twenty minutes hadn't rearranged something in my chest I fully intended to pretend was still where I'd left it.Mike was waiting on the o

POV: ELENA He didn't move for a second too long. Something shifted behind his eyes, unguarded, gone as fast as it came and for one absurd heartbeat I thought he might lean in, right there, in a room full of donors and string quartets and Adrian probably still lurking with that grin. Then the mic on stage caught feedback, some host announcing the next round of bidding, and whatever had been building between us snapped like a rubber band."I should go," I said, stepping back before either of us did something about what had almost happened."Elena—""Consulting materials. Tuesday. I'll be there." I didn't wait for a response. I let the crowd swallow me, pulse doing something erratic I didn’t understand Tuesday came faster than I wanted. Laurent International took up a glass tower downtown, the kind of building built to make you feel like an ant the second you walked through the revolving doors. I had spent the whole morning insisting this was purely professional. Numbers, a contract

POV: ELENA Grayson found his voice before Mike did, which told me exactly how rattled that room really was."That's a fair point, worth reviewing," he said, in the tone of a man who wanted this meeting over more than he wanted to be right. "We'll have the legal take another look at it.""Yes. I think you should," I said. "Before you send it to anyone else."Mike hadn't said a word since he mumbled “no one caught that”. He was still watching me like a door he'd just found unlocked. It should've felt like a win. Mostly, it felt like being studied by someone deciding what to do about it.The meeting broke up a few minutes later, handshakes, promises to follow up, and I grabbed my portfolio and left before anyone could ask me something I didn't have patience for. I made it as far as the elevators before I heard footsteps behind me. Unhurried and deliberate, the kind of walk that assumes you'll wait.I didn't turn around. I hit the button again, harder than necessary."That clause," Mike

POV: ELENA I almost canceled the Sterling meeting twice that morning. Both times, Nadia talked me out of it before I finished the sentence."Girl, you are not canceling a business meeting because you're still buzzing from throwing wine on a stranger," she said, mouth full of toast. "That man doesn't get to cost you a client too.""I'm not hungover.""Girl…at this point you sound hungover.""I'm just tired, there's a difference." I stood in front of my closet holding two blazers like either one might solve something. "What if he tells Sterling? What if this is already a problem?""Then if standing up for yourself is a problem, any company that holds that against you isn't one you want representing your work to. Wear the navy one and go."Sterling's building sat in the financial district — glass, cold marble, a lobby built to make you feel small before you even reached the elevator. I checked in, got a visitor badge with my name spelled almost right, and rode up rehearsing my pitch.

  • BETRAYED BY HER SISTER, CLAIMED BY THE BILLIONAIRE    CHAPTER 2- A NAME AND A PROBLEM

POV: MIKEMy shirt was ruined. I knew that the second the wine hit me cold, then hot, soaking through to my skin, and I still stood there a full minute before I moved. I couldn’t believe what had just happened. "Sir." Priya appeared beside me with a folded jacket, like she always had a spare of something ready. She didn't ask about the wine. " The Car's outside." She said.I didn't take the jacket. I was still watching the door she'd walked out of."Find out who she is." I said."The woman who—" Priya caught herself. "The artist?""You knew?""Everyone in the room knew, sir. It's her exhibition. Her name's been on that wall all night."I hadn't looked at the wall. I'd looked at the price tag at the deal I needed to close and never once looked up at the name printed beneath it. That wasn't like me. I read everything — contracts twice, people faster than that, and somehow I'd missed the one fact that would have changed the whole conversation."Her name," I said again, like saying it
