THE PAST FIVE YEARS

Helen took a long, shaky breath and let it out slowly, staring at the floor. "After our pack fell, the territory was destroyed. But the war debts stayed. Your father, Alpha Hertos, couldn't handle the pressure from the victorious packs. That's why he took the poison."

Valkira closed her eyes for a second. She already knew the basics. But hearing it out loud still cuts deep.

"I had to settle those debts to keep us alive," Helen continued. A fresh tear cut through the dust on her cheek. "I sold everything the pack owned. I gave our land and weapons away for nothing to the turncoats who betrayed us. They wanted to cut all ties with our family."

"Who was the worst?" Valkira asked. Her grip tightened on her knees.

Helen's face twisted with old bitterness. "Lucas. He was the first to abandon our alliance. He became the new Alpha of the Silvermoon Pack. He took our remaining allies and left us to rot in the dirt. Eventually, they drove me out into this Forbidden Forest. I barely got by running this tiny shop."

"But then something changed,” Her sad eyes softened as she looked down at the little girl.

"A stranger came to my door one night. He was carrying Yana in his arms. She was just a baby. He looked at me and said the child belonged to you and him. From that day on, I raised Yana with everything I had. I always believed you would come back to us."

Valkira's heart pounded against her ribs. She knew there was more to the story. "His child? Who was this man, Mother?"

"He called himself Xavier," Helen said. “Yana looks so much like him.” "He looked strong, but his eyes were kind. He had a sharp scar right across his chin. And a birthmark shaped like a crescent on his left wrist."

Valkira's breath caught. A memory flashed in her mind. The mysterious man she had spent that night with during her coming-of-age ceremony. She had never learned his name before he vanished. But he had those exact features. Xavier was her fated mate.

"Did he say anything else before he left?" Valkira pressed.

"He left behind a lot of gold," Helen said. "Then he disappeared into the woods. Over the years, supplies kept showing up at the door. Anonymous packages of food and medicine. I always knew it was Xavier. The money he left is the only reason Yana and I managed to clear the pack debts."

Valkira clenched her hands into fists. Xavier had taken care of her family while she was trapped on the island. He had kept them from starving. And she didn't even know his face.

"Where is he now, Mother?"

Helen hesitated. Her eyes widened with terror. "He came back a year ago. A gang of debt collectors attacked the shop. My life was in danger. Xavier appeared out of nowhere. He killed their fighters, but he got hurt badly in the process."

Valkira's blood ran cold. "Is he still alive?"

"I wanted him to stay and recover," Helen whispered, shaking her head. "But a group of armed strangers came and took him away. Before he left Xavier told me we must never try to find him. Even if you came back."

Valkira stood up. Her hands were shaking. She was going to find Xavier, no matter the cost. She reached out through the mind-link to Chris.

Chris. Search the mainland networks. Find any news about Xavier. Scar on his chin. Crescent birthmark on his left wrist. Find out who took him.

Chris gave a firm nod from the back of the shop. I'm on it, Alpha. I'll find him.

Valkira turned back to her mother. "Mother, If Xavier paid off the debts a year ago, why are the debt collectors still coming here?"

As Helen opened her mouth to answer.

A sharp KNOCK hit the wooden door.

Valkira spun around. Her muscles tensed. She moved to the entrance and pulled the broken door open. No one was there. She stepped out and scanned the street, but whoever had knocked was already gone.

A small blade had been driven into the door. A white note was pinned underneath it.

Valkira pulled the note free and unfolded it. She read the short lines:

Pay the remaining six hundred coins, Helen, or you won't live to see another day. Bring the money. Come alone.

Valkira's eyes moved to the note, hot fury rushing through her veins.

The handwriting was familiar.

She had seen this exact handwriting a thousand times before her downfall. On personal letters. On the fake treaties that had sealed their fate five years ago.

It was Lucas's handwriting.

  • BETRAYED, REBORN, RETURNED: THE RISE OF THE FEMALE ALPHA    The Shadow Fighters Charges

The four traitor Alphas remained on their knees, battered and bleeding as they struggled to stay upright on the floor. Their ruined suits were stained with fresh blood, and small pools of it had gathered around them. For a moment, the hall was completely quiet, with everyone watching the four men and waiting to see what would happen next. But the silence didn't last long.Up in the darker part of the gallery, a tall woman in a dark red jacket watched the scene below with growing anger. She was Seraphina's personal representative on the mainland, and she had spent five years helping the Shadow family maintain its influence through the packs that worked for them, and now she had watched everything fall apart in a matter of minutes. Her eyes moved from the defeated Alphas to Lucas, who could barely move on the floor. It was clear to her that the network was finished and Lucas was in no position to save himself, let alone anyone else. She clenched her teeth, raised her right hand, and gav

  • BETRAYED, REBORN, RETURNED: THE RISE OF THE FEMALE ALPHA    The Alphas' Ruin

Fred remained on his knees, his broad shoulders shaking as his blade lay abandoned on the marble beside him. He didn't even think about reaching for it. Ivan knelt beside him, his face pale and drained of color as he pressed his forehead against the cold floor, too afraid to look up at Valkira. The two men stayed completely still, as if even the smallest movement might draw her attention back to them. But behind their groveling frames, Travis and Kelvin refused to break like the others. They stayed on their feet, their eyes moving quickly around the hall as they searched for any possible way out. Every door was blocked, and every window was covered by thick security shutters. The guests had been pushed back against the walls, leaving the center of the hall covered with broken glass, blood, and fallen bodies. The only sounds were the faint hum of the security system and the uneven breathing of the people trapped inside.Travis swallowed hard and leaned toward Kelvin. “I don't think we

  • BETRAYED, REBORN, RETURNED: THE RISE OF THE FEMALE ALPHA    Breaking the Front Line

Lucas lay at the foot of the stage, barely able to move, his bloodied suit staining the marble beneath him. The guests had backed toward the shutters, staring in shock. Some covered their mouths while others couldn't look away.Fred watched Lucas struggle to breathe, his own hands starting to shake as he stared at the blood on the floor. Ivan grabbed his arm and leaned closer.“Fred,” he whispered, his voice shaking. “She's going to kill us next.”Fred shoved Ivan away, baring his fangs as panic got the better of him. “Gammas! Take them down! We need to get out of here!”His shout echoed across the hall. The guests backed away as the armed wolves around the VIP section raised their weapons.Ivan pointed toward the stage. “Go! Take her down before she gets to us!”Six large wolves stepped out from the VIP lounge. They wore tactical armor with helmets covering most of their faces, and long blades hung at their sides. Their eyes turned yellow as they moved forward, forcing the guests to

  • BETRAYED, REBORN, RETURNED: THE RISE OF THE FEMALE ALPHA    The Gala Trapped

The rebuilt Laurel Tower was packed with wealthy investors and noble pack families. Bright lights reflected off the marble floors and crystal chandeliers while servers moved through the crowd with trays of champagne and wine. A string quartet played near the main stage as quiet conversations filled the hall, the entire place showing just how much money and power had gone into its reconstruction. In the VIP section, the four traitor Alphas: Fred, Ivan, Travis, and Kelvin stood together, trying to keep their conversation private. They smiled whenever someone passed, but their nervous eyes kept scanning the room.Lucas stood between them, holding a glass of whiskey he hadn't touched. His suit covered most of the bruises from the beating, but his pale face and sweaty forehead gave away how badly he was doing. The poison was already taking its toll, and he knew the antidote was still in Valkira's hands. He checked the exits again. His phone had been silent for hours, and the people he used

  • BETRAYED, REBORN, RETURNED: THE RISE OF THE FEMALE ALPHA    The Eve of the Climax

The Obsidian Citadel stood above the coast as the sun went down, its black walls dark against the orange sky. Waves crashed against the rocks below while the last light faded over the city. Valkira stood by the tall window in the war room, watching the streets as the lights came on across the different sectors. Armored vehicles moved through the main roads while General Liam's soldiers held the checkpoints, and the city had gone unusually quiet. Chris came into the room through the elevator with his rifle hanging across his chest and walked over to stand beside her.“You've been standing here for an hour,” he said, looking down at the streets.Valkira kept her eyes on the city. “Lucas knows he's running out of places to hide. He'll make a move soon,” she said.Darius was across the room at the monitors, going through the latest information. “His communication lines are down. The minor packs are trapped inside their own territories, and Leon has the medical blacklist in place.” He loo

  • BETRAYED, REBORN, RETURNED: THE RISE OF THE FEMALE ALPHA    The Minor Packs Assembly

The bunker was buried deep beneath the lower levels of the Citadel, with no windows or natural light anywhere in sight. Bare concrete walls, thick steel supports, and bright overhead lights surrounded the room, making it feel cold and uncomfortable. The air smelled of sweat and tobacco smoke, and the fear in the room was obvious as twenty minor pack leaders crowded around a large steel table, shifting in their chairs and looking at one another while they tried to figure out what to do next. Their chairs scraped against the stone floor whenever someone moved, and the lights flickered whenever the defense systems running through the Citadel powered up above them.Tablets were spread across the table, their screens filled with updates from different parts of the city. Red alerts kept flashing across the displays. Skyline Business had been frozen, the shipping routes had stopped moving, and General Liam's troops had blocked the roads leading into the outer sectors, leaving fewer and fewer
