Pepper POV

I ignored Victor Gunner and pretended not to see him. I turned my head purposely toward the pool area, and my eyes found Dr. Alan Peters.

He had already gotten out of the pool and was walking toward me with his serious face on.

“Sorry,” I told him, but my tone lacked the apology warranted by the occasion.

In fact, I felt proud of myself.

I was able to beat him.

It may not be a contest, but still, the feeling that I was able to win against him makes me feel proud.

The shouts of joy coming from my children also added to the confidence I felt.

When Alan reached me, he wrapped his arms around my shoulder.

“Congratulations!” He said in a subdued voice, but the twinkle in his eyes was unmistakable.
