“Thank you, Saben, for dropping me off,” Jenny said softly as she unbuckled her seatbelt. Her voice was tired, but there was a trace of warmth in it.

Saben turned to her, his dark eyes catching the faint glow of the streetlight. “You don’t have to thank me, Jenny. I wanted to make sure you got home safe.”

Jenny smiled faintly, her fingers brushing the strap of her bag. “Still… it means a lot. Especially after tonight.”

For a moment, silence settled between them. Jenny fiddled with the edge of her scarf, unsure of what else to say. The heaviness of seeing JM again lingered in her chest, but sitting here with Saben, she felt an odd sense of comfort like she didn’t have to carry it all on her own anymore.

Saben cleared his throat gently. “Jenny…” His tone was calm but weighted. “You don’t have to keep everything bottled up. If you ever feel like talking, I’m here. No judgments. Just… here.”

Her throat tightened. She wanted to respond, to tell him how much those words meant, but all that

Eva swiveled to face him, her own eyes frantic with pain and shock. "You call that love? You call killing her, killing yourself, and bringing me into this kind of hell love?" Her laughter was cut-throat, on the verge of hysteria. "You didn't pick me, JM. You came running to me. There's a difference."His jaw grunted, his teeth ground together, but he remained silent. The silence was more painful than anything he could have said.Eva pressed on, her voice trembling, desperate. “If you truly loved me, you wouldn’t still look at her like that. I wouldn’t still feel like I’m living in her shadow every damn day.” She clutched at her chest as though the ache there might rip her apart. “You broke her heart for me, but somehow she still owns yours.”JM's eyes flashed, something vulnerable crossing for an instant before he hid it again. He pushed harder on the gas, the car roaring more fiercely as if it might drown her words out.Eva's hands clenched into the seat padding. "Stop running, JM! Y

Her voice was softer this time, but also stronger, as though she were attempting to hold herself back. To push forward. Not to let her vulnerability seep through the gaps. She wasn't going to allow the world to witness her breaking here, now. Not when there was so much riding on it.Saben appeared to get it, or perhaps it was only the distance that she had created with her words and postures. His hand rested upon her back for an instant, but then he stepped back from her slightly, allowing her a moment to breathe."You're stronger than you know you are, Jenny," he whispered to her, his voice firm yet soft.Jenny smiled, unsure if she was pleased with the commendation or if it was exposing her more. She did not want his sympathy and did not want to be anybody's cause. But then, that instant, in the big hall, with the music and laughter and continuous chatter surrounding her, she had a silent understanding with him, something that was horrifying and putting her feet on ground at the sam

Silence within the car filled the air between them. The engine hummed, and alone, it was the only thing heard, a constant reminder of the widening gap between her past and present. Jenny was stiff, her eyes fixed on the blurred lights of the city passing the window, her hands steepled together in her lap.Saben looked at her, his eyes piercing but expressionless. "You don't have to pretend with me."Jenny's jaw clenched. "Pretend about what?""That you're okay." His voice sliced through the quiet. "I noticed how you stared when he entered. JM Reese."Her breath caught, and she jerked her head hard toward him. "You saw?"Saben's lips curled into something that wasn't really a smile. "Hard not to. You were solid, but your eyes… they betrayed you.Jenny closed her eyes tightly, her forehead against the chilled glass of the window. "I thought I was finished feeling this. I thought I could confront him without. shattering." Her voice shook, wavering at the edges. "Then I saw him with anoth

The vehicle moved forward, the gentle purr of the engine harmonizing with the quiet sound of jazz music coming from the speakers. The city lights flashed by, a blur of colors against the rich blue of the night sky. Within the vehicle, the atmosphere was different still electric, yet curiously soothing. Saben had been quiet for a moment, his eyes on the road ahead, his hand firm on the wheel. But Jenny felt the strength of his presence behind her, like a gentle force alongside her, even as there still lingered an unmistakable tension between them.Jenny cast a sidelong glance at him. He was intense, his jaw clenched in that manner she had seen before, but his expression had moved from the professional seriousness to something less severe, something more. genuine. She could sense the concern in the manner in which he was standing, the manner in which his stance subtly altered as she readjusted in her chair, as if he were doing so unconsciously to create space for her, as if he knew prec

Saben's hand stayed close to hers, a quiet promise that she wasn't on her own. But her heart still raced in her chest, still shaken by the meeting with JM. And as they approached her car, her eyes flashed sideways just in time to see the familiar figure of JM Reese standing by his car, his new girlfriend Eva Ross by his side. Her breath caught, her heart missing a beat when their eyes met across the distance of the parking lot. For a moment, a fleeting one, time stood still. It was not merely the physical distance between them that left her feeling far away, but also the emotional gap that had grown in the intervening time. The bond they once shared now felt like a lifetime away, yet the attraction she still felt was unmistakable.JM's expression was impassive, yet a glint of something flickered in his eyes something she couldn't pin down. Regret? Sorrow? She didn't know. His eyes lingered slightly longer than they needed to, and she could feel the beat of her heart accelerate, a coll
