The sun poured warmly in through the high glass windows of the Thompson estate dining room, its golden light illuminating the long mahogany table. The aroma of freshly baked bread, crackling bacon, and freshly ground coffee filled the air, blending with the faint hint of rose scent from the gardens immediately beyond.

The vaulted ceilings and chandelier full of crystals in the dining hall were meant to be impressive. Within these walls, however, the breakfast power play was less about the meal itself and more about rank.

Saben sat in the distance, attitude sharp but with a hint of fatigue from the previous night's congress. His phone vibrated quietly in his pocket, a message from one of his directors, but he let it go unread. Family breakfast was not something one shrugged off easily, particularly when Wendy Taylor, his great-grandmother, was in charge.

At the table head, Wendy's statuesque form presided. In her nineties, she still exuded authority. Her hawk-like eyes were piercing, m

Jenny was outside her apartment door, her purse still clutched in her hand, when her phone rang. The name on the screen stopped her short. Zina. For an instant, Jenny thought of letting it ring through. She was too spent, her feelings still tender from dinner. But Zina was stubborn, and Jenny knew if she left it unanswered now, she'd only have to deal with tougher questions tomorrow.Taking a deep breath, she pressed accept."Jenny," Zina's crisp, no-nonsense voice broke through the line. "Well? How did it go? And more to the point, what in the world was that all about? Why did Saben ask you to dinner with his family?"Jenny leaned against the door, her knees weak. “Zina…” Her voice trembled despite her best effort to stay steady. “I—I don’t even know where to start. I’m still trying to make sense of it myself.”“Then start at the beginning,” Zina replied firmly. “You’re not a woman who just ‘happens’ to end up at the Thompson estate dinner table. What’s the deal? Was it business? Pe

She wished to believe him. She wished to trust him. But her heart was still too shattered, still too closed off from the betrayal of her past."I'm afraid, Saben," she said quietly, her voice shaking. "I'm afraid I'll get hurt again. That I'll be foolish. I don't know if I can do this."Saben reached out next, his hand sweeping lightly along her arm. The heat of his contact was stabilizing, a soothing reassurance in the tempest of her feelings. "You don't have to be alone, Jenny," he spoke softly now, filled with compassion. "You don't have to be afraid with me.There was silence for a moment, a heavy quiet that was full of meaning. Jenny closed her eyes, allowing the weight of his words to settle in her chest. She wasn't ready yet. She wasn't ready to trust, to let someone else in. But as she stood there, her heart racing wildly, she knew that perhaps just perhaps she didn't have to be absolutely ready.Maybe the first step was simply allowing herself the possibility of something new

Jenny's brow creased in confusion. "What do you mean? You brought me here to introduce me to your family. You allowed them to believe I'm somebody to you. Why? What am I to you, Saben? I don't fit in this world. You know that."Her voice trembled at the last line, and for an instant, it seemed that walls she had built so meticulously were breaking. All the vulnerability she had concealed all through dinner was now spilling out. She had always kept her feelings in tight control, but this .this was something else. She had entered his world believing she could cope, but now, she didn't know where she was.Saben's face relaxed, his eyes studying hers as if attempting to read the extremity of her confusion. He moved toward her, slowly, carefully, as if he feared making a single misstep and having her move away even farther."Jenny, you do belong here. Perhaps not the way that you think, but you belong," he told her, his voice low, his eyes unflinching. "I know you've had your questions as

Jenny's chest clenched at the implication. People like you. What did that even mean? Was it that she wasn't raised in this world of money and high status? Was it that she wasn't refined enough to be sitting at this table? Before she could collect herself, Saben returned to stand by her side, his stance a buffer between her and Sabrina's inquiring eyes. "Shall we go into the lounge and have a drink?" he asked with a smooth smile, his voice casual but underlaid with something more substantial.Jenny looked up at him, thankful for the rescue. She nodded hastily. "Yes, that would be nice.Saben assisted her into standing from the table, his hand caressing her lightly between her shoulder blades as he led her toward the next room. It was a step away from the dinner table and into the fresh air of freedom, and yet the burden of the night still sat heavily about her. When they walked into the lounge, the room was warmer, more intimate. The soft music of a string quartet was in the background

Jenny stood stock-still, her eyes fixed on Saben as his words hung in the air between them. Just… trust me.The words echoed in her mind, a promise and a mystery. What did he mean by that? She had only known him for a few months, and yet, here she was standing alone with him in his mansion, surrounded by his family, all of them staring at her with varying degrees of interest and expectation. Her heart thudded, a strange mix of excitement and fear churning in her chest. She wanted to take a step back, to retreat, but the force of his presence was magnetic. His eyes held hers, steady, calm, almost too steady. His lips were barely open, as if he was waiting for her to say something, do something. But what was there to say? What could she say?"I… don't understand," she whispered, her voice trembling.Saben took a step closer, the space between them shrinking. "I know you don't. But you will, Jenny. It's just a matter of time."Jenny swallowed, her mind whirling. What is he asking of me?

The huge doors of the Thompson estate swung open before Jenny had even a chance to knock. A butler in a sharp black suit stood rigid, bowing with practiced efficiency."Miss White. Welcome to the Thompson residence. Mr. Thompson is expecting you."Jenny's pulse skipped. She managed a courteous nod, her own voice too small to reply. Passing through the door, she was immediately enveloped in opulence: shining marble floors that reflected under crystal chandeliers, walls covered with oil paintings, and heavy carpets so thick her heels appeared to drop into them. The air was filled with a delicate mixture of lilies and old wood, the unmistakable perfume of money and heritage. What am I doing here? Her grip shook her clutch as she trailed behind the butler through a broad hallway. Each ring of her footsteps sounded too brash, each step reminding her that she was not in a world such as this. She had grown up in a small house, lived as an adult in tiny apartments far from the luxury about h
