“Hello, Cassandra?” I utter into the phone.

My body tenses.

I have no idea what she’s about to say.

“Hi! Katty?” Her voice comes through the line. “I’ve got some news.”

I close my eyes, unable to answer, holding my breath.

I hope the dream I had was just that, a nightmare.

“Hello? Katty?” she calls. “You there?”

“Yes… I’m here. I’m just…” I rub my eyes. “Cassandra, the next thing you say could either destroy me… or save me.”

“Oh, Katty… Alpha Zane is still alive,” she reveals.

I release a breath.

“Thank God!” I let out a shaky chuckle. “I thought he was d…” I stop myself. “Thank you so much for telling me, Cassandra.”

“Of course. I told you I would. But…”

Christ. There’s a but?

“What is it now?” My panic spikes.

“He’s not out of the woods yet. He’s still unconscious. No one knows when or if… he’ll wake up.” She releases it bit by bit, careful with her words. “He’s healing properly, but he’s just not waking. I’m sorry, Katty.”
