Val arrives at my apartment first. Her perky-blonde personality is in full swing when she walks in the door. “Once you tell me the whole thing, we’ll figure this out,” she declares before I can speak. She hands me a bottle of wine and gives me a one-armed hug. “Open this sucker up. Charlie should be here any minute.”

She’s not supposed to know about werewolves yet. To keep the pack safe, a woman is not told about her werewolf mate until she’s ready to get married. But Charlie leaked the truth to Val when she was struggling with her decision to be with Ryan. For that I’m grateful, because I need both of my friends tonight.

Val leads the way to the kitchen with a shopping bag on her arm, which rustles as she moves. I say, “Thanks for coming over, but I don’t think we’re going to solve this.” My voice shakes as I fight tears. “I think Jasper tampered with Life Shift’s code to destroy it.”

Val hustles over to the cabinet with my big bowls. A drawer scrapes open as I retrieve the wine open

Perhaps he would have thought differently if she had told him the real reason she never ventured into Talon lands. She should have told them she couldn't go, and even the reason why. Yet she hadn't been able to prevent this encounter. Perhaps she was weak. Now she stood with her family outside their lair and in front of the Talons... in front of Hunter. She'd seen pictures of him over the years, of course. She hadn't been able to stop herself. Her family had seen him numerous times, and her cousin Gina had mated with Quinn, an ancient Talon wolf, so she'd been able to observe the role of the Talon Alpha through his eyes. But none of that prepared her for the shock of seeing him in person. Her wolf howled, pushing her with more determination than she had imagined possible. He was big. Too big. She'd grown up with burly men, so his size shouldn't have surprised her, but the touch-hungry woman inside her noticed. He must have been a few inches taller than six feet six. With his broad sho

100 YEARS AGO: DESTINYHunter stiffened. “A plan? What the hell do you need a plan for with me? Why are you here?”Brynn stood up and walked over to him. She tossed her long, dark brown hair—the same color as the rest of the Brentwoods'—over her shoulders and blinked at him with Brentwood blue eyes.“You’re our brother, and you’re suffering,” she whispered. They were all wolves, so they could hear her clearly. “You had to kill a lone wolf who threatened the border and wouldn’t give up. Now you have to make decisions that, from our point of view, won’t be easy. So, Hunter, my brother, our brother, we’re here for you. Even if we bother you like crazy. We’re here.”Hunter narrowed his eyes, though his heart warmed at her words. Yes, his brothers and cousins were there for him, but some things were just for the Alpha. If he had a mate, he could lean on her a little, but since the goddess hadn't blessed him, he didn't have that option. At that time, I wasn't sure if I would ever do it.W

“So many lilies,” I say to Val. The scent from the gathered pink and white Stargazer lilies is strong in the conference room of Kevin Black’s office building, and I wonder how the werewolves in attendance are dealing with it. “Did you rob a cemetery?”“I had nothing to do with it.” Val holds up her left palm to shield her right index finger as she points to the scowling giant leaning on the wall with his arms crossed, looking like someone’s bodyguard. She mouths the words, “But I think he did.”I glance around the sunlit room. Round indents in the carpet mark where a table must have sat at one point, and a podium adorned with some of the flowers stands at one end of the room.“It looks fantastic in here, Val. Thank you.”“It’s not my best work. But the light is perfect. If we hurry, the sun will be setting right about the time you say ‘I do.’”I lo

“What do you think?” Ryan asks. The smirk on his face tells me he knows how sexy he looks in his perfectly tailored suit.I chuckle. “That’ll do.” But my smile is strained, and I can’t keep my gurgling stomach quiet, especially from werewolf ears. “Lunch didn’t agree with me.”“You didn’t eat much lunch. Or any breakfast.”“Yeah. I don’t eat breakfast. And lunch…” I walk over to him, replaying in my mind that scene from our picnic in the rain. His silk tie is smooth in my fingers when I adjust it. “I was a bit distracted.”But even the memory of our amazing physical chemistry can’t keep my hands from shaking.Ryan wraps his fingers around mine. “It’s going to be okay. You really are going to enjoy my bite.”“That’s no longer the part I’m worried about.”“I’m so sorry y

The teakettle hisses on the stove, but I can’t seem to climb out of my place on the couch to do anything about it.Ryan gets up, and not only does he remove the boiling water from the burner, but he splashes it into a mug he’s prepared to make tea for me. The pillow in my hands is soft as I squeeze it tightly to my chest. My phone dings with a text, and I glance at the coffee table to see a notification from Val. She’s dying of curiosity about how things are going with Ryan, but because I can’t tell her about him being a werewolf, I’m afraid to answer. The couch sinks as Ryan sits next to me and places my tea on the coffee table. “Talk to me, Charlie.” When I don’t respond, he places a hand on my arm so lightly that I can hardly feel it. “Scream, break something, hit me. Please. Whatever you need to do to get the frustration out, please do it.”I turn to him. “Would it make a difference?”“It might make you feel better. This quiet version of you is scaring me.”I snort. “You want to k

“You’re not listening,” Ryan tells me, gripping my wrists to keep me from peeling off his towel. We both took hot showers, separately, when we returned from the park, and I’m in a thin silk robe that I know hugs my curves and leaves little to the imagination.“I’m struggling to keep control, Charlie,” he says. “We dodged a bullet earlier, and now I need you to be strong for us.”“It’s not like my apartment is bugged or anything.”Ryan mumbles something under his breath that sounds a lot like, “But my mind is.”The idea that his alpha could be tapping into his thoughts for no reason seems ridiculous.I undo my robe’s tie, letting the smooth fabric slip through my hand, and shrug out of the garment. It slithers down to my feet, and Ryan’s chest expands with a sharp inhale.I smile. “Then perhaps I’ll just give you a little visual foreplay.”Ryan groans. “You’re going to be the death of me.” He drops his towel too.I sashay to the bed with him close at my heels. The mattress sinks beneat
