The Great Hall empties out fast once Kael starts shouting orders, and the silence that's left behind feels almost worse than the noise did.

No laughter drifting from near the hearth anymore. No warriors trading stories over half-finished plates.

Just the sound of boots pounding down stone corridors, doors banging shut one after another somewhere deep in the Keep, and Kael's voice cutting through all of it, low and sharp enough to send warriors scattering in every direction at once.

"Search every corridor. Every room, every cellar, every crawlspace big enough to hide a man." His eyes are hard as flint, his whole body coiled tight, like something wound too far and about to snap loose. "If he's still inside these walls, I want him found before he finds a way past them."

Lyra stands frozen near the doorway, watching the man she argued with in his study just that morning disappear completely. In his place stands somebody colder. Somebody a whole lot more dangerous.

"Kael." Her voice comes out smaller than she wants it to. "What if he's already gone?"

"Then we find out how." He doesn't even look at her when he says it, too busy scanning the room, tracking every warrior peeling off toward a different corridor.

But his hand finds hers for one quick second anyway, firm and sure, gone again before anybody else in the Hall notices. "Stay close to me. Whatever happens next, I need you where I can see you."

She nods, throat too tight for words, and falls into step right behind him as he strides out through the tall doors.

They find Bren twenty minutes later, cornered in the stables by two of Ronan's warriors, breathing hard, eyes wild, a half-packed bag dropped in the straw at his feet like he'd been caught halfway out the door.

"Easy now." Ronan's voice stays deceptively calm as he steps forward, blocking the only clear path to the stable doors. "Nobody here's looking for trouble. Unless you're planning on giving us some."

"I don't know what this is about." Bren's eyes dart between the two warriors, then flick past them to Kael, striding in with Lyra a step behind him. "I was just heading out for supplies—"

"In the middle of the night, with the gates sealed and every guard in this Keep hunting for you?" Kael's voice comes out flat, dangerous, no room in it for anything but the truth. "Try again."

Bren's jaw works like he's chewing on an answer he doesn't want to give. For a second Lyra genuinely thinks he might bolt anyway, might try shifting and fighting his way past two warriors twice his size just for the chance at open air. Instead something in him just seems to buckle, all at once, his shoulders dropping, whatever fight he had left draining straight out of him.

"I didn't want any of this," he says, and his voice cracks right down the middle. "I swear to you, I didn't want any of this."

"Didn't want any of what?" Kael takes a slow step closer. "Say it plainly. Right now."

Bren's eyes flick over to Lyra, guilt written so raw across his face it's almost hard to look at, and something in her stomach turns cold before he's even said a word.

"Seraphine came to me weeks ago. Long before any of this happened." His voice shakes badly now. "She said there might be trouble headed for the pack. Said if a certain wolf ever turned up, I was to send word straight to her contacts outside the territory, no questions asked. I didn't know who she meant.

Didn't know why. I just did what she told me, because she's an Elder, and you don't say no to an Elder. Not when you're nobody important. Not when saying no could cost you everything."

"You sent hunters after me." Lyra's own voice comes out steadier than she expects, though her hands won't stop shaking at her sides. "You knew exactly what could happen to me out there, and you sent them anyway."

"I didn't think they'd actually hurt you." Bren's voice finally breaks all the way, tears standing bright in his eyes now. "I told myself it was just information. Just words passed along. I told myself it wasn't really my business to ask what she needed it for."

"That's the excuse." Ronan's voice is hard behind him, no sympathy in it at all. "Everybody's got one. Doesn't make it true."

Kael's expression doesn't soften, not even a fraction. "You nearly got her killed. Twice now, if you count what almost happened tonight in that Hall."

"I know." Bren sinks all the way down to his knees in the straw, every last bit of defiance gone out of him completely. "I know, and I'm sorry, and I know that sorry doesn't fix a single thing. Not anymore. Not after everything."

Nobody in the stable answers that, because every one of them already knows it's true.

Seraphine is waiting for them back in the Great Hall, seated calm and perfectly composed at the long table like she's simply passing a quiet evening, silver-blonde hair catching the low torchlight, pale green eyes tracking every movement in the room with a patience that makes Lyra's skin crawl.

"I did wonder how long that would take you," she says before Kael can even open his mouth. "Bren was never particularly good under pressure. I did warn him once, actually, not to let it show so plainly."

"You're not even going to deny it." Kael's voice comes out low, shaking with fury he's clearly working hard to keep leashed. "You sat in this very Hall and lied to my face, and now you can't even be bothered to deny any of it."

"What would be the point?" Her composure doesn't crack, not even slightly. "You already know exactly what I am, Kael. You've known since the moment that girl walked through your gates and turned into something none of us were ever taught could still exist."

"Her name is Lyra." Kael's voice cuts through the Hall like something sharpened for exactly this purpose. "And you murdered her mother in cold blood."

"I protected this pack." For the first time, something sharp flashes behind Seraphine's calm eyes, real conviction underneath all that careful polish. "You have no idea what that bloodline nearly did to Blackthorn the first time it rose to power.

I watched it happen with my own eyes. I watched wolves I loved die because a family exactly like hers decided their blood entitled them to power the rest of us bled and starved for. I was not about to let history repeat itself simply because a child grew up and finally learned her own name."

"That wasn't your decision to make." Lyra's voice rings out across the Hall, louder and steadier than she expects it to, silencing every whisper running through the watching pack instantly.

"You didn't just kill my mother. You stole my whole life from me. Every question I ever asked. Every single night I cried myself to sleep believing she'd simply abandoned me.

That was you. That was your choice. And I never once got one of my own."

Something in Seraphine's face shifts at that, just barely, something that might almost pass for regret if Lyra didn't know better by now. "You're right about that much.

I never gave you a choice in any of it. I made the decision I believed this pack genuinely needed. And I'd make it again, if I had to. Even knowing what it's cost."

The whole Hall goes utterly silent.

"Take her to the holding cells." Kael's voice drops quiet now, controlled in a way that somehow feels more frightening than his anger ever did. "And him." He nods toward Bren, still kneeling near the doorway, shoulders shaking with silent sobs. "The Elders will decide what happens to both of them."

Two warriors step forward to lead Seraphine away, and she rises without any resistance at all, smoothing her skirts down like she's simply excusing herself from dinner instead of walking toward a cell. At the doorway, though, she pauses one last time, turning back to look directly at Lyra.

"For what it's worth," she says, quiet enough that only those standing nearby actually catch it, "I hope I was wrong about you. I genuinely hope whatever's waking up in your blood turns out to be something this pack can actually survive."

Then she's gone, escorted out through the tall doors, and the warmth doesn't come back into that Hall for a very long time after.

Lyra finds Kael later that same night, alone up on the wall walk above the courtyard, staring out at the dark treeline beyond the Keep, the torches along the battlements burning low and steady in the cold night air.

"You should be resting," he says without turning around, though something underneath his voice sounds glad she came up anyway.

"I couldn't." She wraps both arms around herself against the chill, coming to stand beside him at the stone edge. "Every time I close my eyes I hear her voice. I'd make it again if I had to. Like killing my mother was just — practical. Just business, the way trading goods or settling a debt is business."

"That's exactly what it was, to her." His jaw tightens, eyes still fixed out on the dark forest below. "That's what scares me most about the whole thing, honestly. She wasn't cruel for the sake of being cruel. She genuinely believed, right up until they dragged her out of that Hall, that she was protecting this pack. Wolves like that don't stop, Lyra. They just find new reasons to keep going."

"Do you think there are more of them?" The thought's been sitting cold in her chest ever since Bren admitted what he'd done. "More wolves loyal to her somewhere, hiding, just waiting for another chance?"

"I don't know." His hands grip the stone edge hard enough that his knuckles go pale. "And that scares me more than I really want to admit out loud."

"I keep waiting to feel relieved." Lyra stares out at the trees, voice quieter now. "She's locked up. The truth's finally out in the open. And I don't feel one bit lighter for it."

"Maybe relief isn't what this is supposed to feel like." Kael glances sideways at her. "Maybe it's just the start of grieving something you never actually got the chance to grieve properly the first time around."

She lets that settle for a moment, surprised by how much sense it makes. "When did you get so good at that?"

"I'm not." A faint, tired smile crosses his face, gone almost as quick as it appears. "I've just had a lot of practice burying things instead of actually feeling them. I'd rather not watch you make that same mistake, if I can help it."

They stand there together in silence for a while, the wind picking up around them, carrying the smell of pine and distant rain across the courtyard below.

"Thank you," Lyra says finally, quiet. "For believing me tonight. About Bren. You didn't hesitate. Not even for a second."

"I should've believed you sooner." He finally turns to look at her properly, something raw and unguarded showing in his face that she hasn't seen from him before, not once.

"I keep thinking about everything you've lost because people in my own family decided your life mattered less than their own comfort. I don't know how to fix any of that. I honestly don't think I can."

"You don't have to fix it." Her voice softens despite everything in her that wants to stay guarded. "You just have to stop pretending it didn't happen. That's more than anyone's ever actually done for me before tonight."

Something shifts in the space between them, charged and uncertain all at once, and for a long moment neither of them moves, torchlight flickering gold and warm across both their faces.

"Lyra—"

A sharp cry cuts through the night before he can finish whatever he means to say, distant but completely unmistakable, coming from somewhere out past the Keep's outer wall.

Both their heads snap toward the sound at once. Kael's whole body goes rigid beside her, every trace of softness gone in an instant, replaced by the alert, dangerous stillness of an Alpha sensing real threat.

"That came from the tree line," he says, voice dropping low.

"Is it one of ours?"

"I don't know." He's already moving, already calling down to the warriors stationed below in the courtyard. "Ronan! Get eyes on the forest edge, now!"

Lyra grips the cold stone of the wall, straining hard to see anything beyond the reach of the torchlight, heart hammering as shapes start emerging slowly from between the dark trees. Not wolves in any kind of hunting formation.

Not warriors coming back from patrol. A line of figures walking calm and deliberate straight toward the gates, completely unhurried, moving like they already believe they have every right in the world to be standing there.

At the front of them walks a wolf who shifts smoothly into a man right as he steps into the reach of the torchlight — ash-black hair, sharp golden eyes that find Lyra's face immediately across the courtyard below, like he's been searching for exactly her and nobody else this whole time.

"Who is that?" Lyra's voice comes out barely above a whisper.

Beside her, Kael goes very, very still, and when he finally answers, his voice carries a weight she's never once heard from him before, not in five days of knowing him.

"That's Darius Veyr," he says quietly. "The Rogue Alpha."

Below them, the great iron gates begin to swing slowly open, and Lyra's stomach drops straight through the stone floor beneath her feet.

Nobody gave that order. Not tonight, not after everything that's happened, not with a traitor barely dragged from this very Hall an hour ago. No guard standing watch would dare open those gates on their own authority.

Which means somebody inside these walls already let Darius Veyr in, long before either of them even knew he was standing at the tree line.

And whoever it was, they're still out there somewhere, watching everything unfold from the shadows.

Chapter Ten: The Weight of PowerThe world comes back in pieces.Lyra blinks. The cave walls swim into focus. Water drips somewhere. Her body aches. Every muscle screams. Her head pounds like someone took a hammer to it.She's on the ground. Not chained anymore. The silver chains lie melted in a puddle near her feet. The metal still glows faintly. Still warm. What happened? She tries to sit up. Pain lances through her. She falls back down. Groans."Easy." A voice. Familiar. Kael's voice. "You've been out for a while. Don't move too fast."She turns her head. Kael sits beside her. His face is bruised. His lip is split. There's a cut above his eye that's still oozing blood. But he's alive. He's here."Seraphine." The name comes out like a curse. "Where is she?""Gone." His jaw tightens. "She ran. When you broke free, when the power exploded out of you, she ran. She's probably halfway to the Keep by now."Lyra tries to process this. Tries to remember. The chains. The knife. Seraphine sta

The fighting doesn't stop.Lyra tears through the rogues. Her claws find throats. Her teeth find flesh. Blood sprays across her face. Hot and sticky. She doesn't wipe it away. She doesn't care.More come. They keep coming. Through the broken door. Through the cracks in the walls. Everywhere she looks, there's another face. Another set of teeth. Another weapon aimed at her heart. She fights them all."Lyra!" Kael's voice cuts through the noise. He's beside her. Sword swinging. Face covered in blood. His eyes find hers. "Stay close. Catches him across the chest. He falls. Another takes his place. Then another. They never stop. They never run out."The door!" Soren shouts somewhere behind her. "We need to get out. Now!"Lyra looks up. The temple door is shut. Sealed tight. No handle. No crack. Just so

  • BLOOD OF THE FORGOTTEN    THE HOLLOW MOON

The sun comes up grey and cold over Blackthorn Keep.Lyra stands at the eastern gate. Her breath smokes in the air. Her body hurts. Her head hurts worse. She didn't sleep. Couldn't. Every time she shut her eyes, she saw that cell. That note. That eye staring at her from the paper.Behind her, the group gets ready. Kael straps on his sword. Soren holds a map close to a torch. Ronan stands off to the side, watching the trees like he's expecting something to jump out. Mira packs bandages into a leather bag. But it means something."You ready?" Kael walks up beside her. His voice is low. Tired. But steady."No." She shakes her head. "But I'm going."He almost smiles. "Same thing.""No it's not. Ready means you know what's coming. Ready means you've thought about everything." She turns to look at him. "I'm w

  • BLOOD OF THE FORGOTTEN    THE EMPTY CELL

The first arrow hits the courtyard wall two feet from Lyra's head. Stone splinters fly everywhere. Something sharp slices her cheek. She feels the sting but doesn't have time to react."Down!" Kael grabs her shoulder and shoves her behind an overturned cart. She hits the ground hard. A second arrow whistles past. It plants itself in the wooden wheel, right where she was standing.Chaos everywhere. Warriors running. People screaming. Torches fall and flicker on the stone. Smoke starts to fill the air. The war horn blasts somewhere beyond the walls, low and endless. It vibrates in her chest. Makes her wolf restless and angry."Who's attacking us?" Her voice shakes. Her heart pounds so hard it hurts."I don't know." Kael's eyes scan the darkness. His body stays coiled tight, ready to spring. "Doesn't sound like Darius's people. His rogues don't use arrows. They fight close. Wolf form. Always have.""Then who—"A warrior stumbles past them. Blood soaks his shoulder. His face twists in pai

Not the size of him, not the golden eyes. The calm."Kael Ardyn." His voice carries clean across the courtyard, unhurried. "Wondered whether you'd bother coming down yourself, or just send the warriors to handle it.""You're standing on my land, uninvited." Kael doesn't raise his voice. He do
