Kael doesn't wait for her. He's already taking the stairs two at a time, shouting orders down into the courtyard before his boots even hit stone, and Lyra scrambles to keep up because the last thing she wants right now is to be left alone on that wall with a stranger's eyes still burning holes into the back of her mind.

By the time she catches up, the courtyard's already lined with warriors, weapons half-drawn, nobody quite sure yet whether tonight calls for a fight or just a very tense conversation.

Darius Veyr stands just past the open gate, completely at ease, hands loose at his sides, looking about as threatened as a man standing in his own front hall.

That's what unnerves her most, honestly. Not the size of him, not the golden eyes. The calm.

"Kael Ardyn." His voice carries clean across the courtyard, unhurried. "Wondered whether you'd bother coming down yourself, or just send the warriors to handle it."

"You're standing on my land, uninvited." Kael doesn't raise his voice. He doesn't need to. "Talk fast, or I decide you're a threat instead of a guest."

"Fair." Darius lifts both hands slightly, no weapon anywhere on him, though something about how relaxed he is makes the gesture feel more unsettling, not less. "I'm not here for you, Alpha. Think you already worked that much out."

Then his eyes find her. Lyra, half-hidden behind Kael's shoulder, and something in his face sharpens all at once, the way a hunter's does when the thing he's been tracking finally steps into view.

"Lyra Veyne." He says her name like it means something to him. "Been looking for you a long time. Longer than you've probably had a name to look for."

Her stomach twists. "You know who I am."

"I know exactly who you are." One slow step forward, and every warrior in the courtyard tightens their grip at once.

He stops immediately, palms lifted, patient as anything. "I'm not here to hurt anybody tonight. I just want to talk."

"Talk from right there, then." Kael doesn't move, but somehow he's shifted just enough to stand a half-step in front of her without either of them noticing him do it. "You don't come any closer."

"Protective of her." A faint curve pulls at Darius's mouth. "Can't say I blame you, given your family's history with hers.

Kael's jaw goes tight. He doesn't answer that one.

"I'll just say what I came here to say, and you can do whatever you want with it after." Darius's gaze settles back on Lyra, steady, unwavering.

"Your bloodline isn't just an old family tree, Lyra. It's the last living thread of something a lot older than this pack. Older than Blackthorn itself. A power that's been sleeping a very long time, waiting on the one wolf who could actually wake it back up.

Somewhere in you, I think you already know that. I think you've felt it moving since the first night your wolf came out."

She sucks in a breath. She's never told anyone about the whispers, the pull deep in her chest, the way something ancient seems to hum right under her skin whenever fear takes over. "How could you possibly know that?"

"Because I've spent my whole life studying exactly what you're only starting to understand." His voice drops, gentler now.

"Come with me. Let me show you what you actually are, away from a pack that spent eighteen years trying to erase you and only stopped once they got caught doing it.

I can teach you to hold onto what's waking up in you instead of running from it. I can help you become what you were always going to be."

"She's not going anywhere with you." Kael's voice is low, edged with warning.

"Not your call, Alpha." Darius doesn't even glance his way. Eyes still locked on Lyra. "Hers."

The whole courtyard goes still, waiting to see what she'll say.

Her heart's pounding so hard she can feel it in her throat. And underneath the fear, something else flares up too — the part of her that's spent her whole life being told what she can and can't want, furious now that two grown men are standing here talking about her future like she's not even in the conversation.

"I decide." Louder than she means it to come out. Both men actually turn to look at her properly this time. "Not either of you. Me."

Something crosses Darius's face. Surprise, maybe. Or approval. Hard to say which. "Of course. My mistake. What do you want to know?"

"Why me." She holds his stare, refusing to let the fear show in her voice. "The real reason. Not the speech about destiny and ancient power."

For the first time, a crack shows in Darius's composure. Small, but she catches it. "Because whoever controls what's inside you controls the balance of power across every territory north of the mountains. Blackthorn included. I'd rather that be me than somebody who'll use you the way Seraphine already tried. I'd rather you choose it than have it stolen from you all over again."

"That doesn't exactly make me trust you." Her voice wavers despite her best effort. "Sounds like exactly what someone says right before they take something anyway."

"Maybe so." He doesn't bother denying it, which somehow lands worse than a denial would have.

"I've found honesty tends to work better than lies, in the long run, with someone as sharp as you clearly are. Lies get found out eventually. Truth just gets accepted, once the alternative gets bad enough."

"Is that the plan? Wait until things here get bad enough that I come running?"

"The plan is you staying alive long enough to have that choice at all." His voice never wavers. "That's the only thing I'm counting on tonight."

"Is that supposed to be a threat?"

"An observation." He dips his head, almost a bow. "I won't force anything tonight, Lyra Veyne. I'm not your uncle. I'm certainly not Seraphine Dray.

But since you asked for honesty, I'll give you one more piece of it." His eyes flick briefly toward Kael, then back. "Whatever protection you think you've found behind these walls won't hold. Not against what's coming. And when it fails, my offer's still on the table."

"Leave." Kael's voice drops flat and lethal, patience finally spent. "You said what you came to say. Get out of my territory before you regret walking into it."

Darius takes his time responding, unbothered by the threat, before turning back to Lyra one last time.

"Think it over. You know the way to the Rogue Lands now. Elara can point you the rest, assuming she hasn't changed her mind about which side she's standing on."

Elara's name lands like ice water down Lyra's spine. "What is that supposed to mean?"

But Darius only smiles, thin and impossible to read, already turning to leave, his rogues falling into step behind him without a sound. "Ask her yourself, next time you see her."

The gates shut the second the last rogue clears them, and the whole courtyard seems to exhale at once, tension breaking into a low buzz of nervous talk among the warriors.

"Find out who opened those gates." Kael's voice snaps through the noise, fresh fury bleeding into every word. "Now, before whoever did it has time to hide it."

Ronan's already moving, calling out names, sending warriors back into the dark halls of the Keep.

Lyra stands still in the middle of the chaos, Darius's words circling in her head over and over. Whatever protection you think you've found here won't hold.

And worse, underneath that: Elara can point you the rest, assuming she hasn't changed her mind about which side she's standing on.

"Lyra." Kael's hand settles gently on her shoulder, and she flinches hard enough that he pulls back right away. "Hey. Look at me."

She does. Real worry sits plain across his face.

"He's playing with your head," Kael says, quiet. "That's the whole point of what he just did. He wants you scared and doubting everyone around you, because a wolf who trusts nobody is a wolf who's easy to pick off alone."

"What if he's not wrong, though?" Her voice comes out smaller than she wants. "What if this place actually can't protect me? You had a traitor in your own halls, Kael. Found one tonight. What's stopping there being more?"

"Then we find them too." Steady. Certain enough that she almost believes it. "I'm not letting him take you. Not tonight. Not ever."

"You can't actually promise that."

"No." Something raw slips into his voice. "I can't. But I can promise I won't stop trying."

She wants to believe him. Some small, stubborn, worn-down part of her almost does.

"For what it's worth," she says, quieter now, "I don't want to go anywhere with him. Not tonight. Not after whatever's coming next, either."

His shoulders loosen, just a little, relief he doesn't hide. "Good. That's — good."

"Doesn't mean I trust you completely, either." She glances up, the ghost of a smile pulling at her mouth despite everything. "Just so that's clear."

"Noted." A real smile breaks through this time, quick but genuine, and for one small moment the courtyard doesn't feel quite so much like a battlefield about to happen.

Midnight's long gone by the time the Keep finally settles, warriors trickling back one by one with nothing to report — no sign of whoever opened the gates, no trace left behind except the memory of golden eyes and a voice that won't stop looping in Lyra's head.

She's nearly back to her room when Soren catches up in the hall, out of breath, a fistful of papers clutched against his chest.

"Found something." Low voice, glancing over his shoulder before he keeps going. "In the records from the vault. It's not just about your bloodline, Lyra. There's something else buried in here. Something about the Hollow Moon Temple, and a prophecy that isn't quite the story everyone's always been told."

"What kind of something?"

He hesitates, and that hesitation alone drops her stomach through the floor.

"I think you need to see this yourself," he finally says. "Tonight. Before Kael, if you're alright with that. I think what's in here might change everything he believes is happening to you."

Before she can answer, a horn sounds somewhere far off, low and mournful, rolling out across the dark territory beyond the Keep's walls.

Soren goes pale. "That's not a patrol signal."

"Then what is it?"

His eyes lift to hers, grim, certain. "That's the war horn, Lyra. Somebody just declared war on Blackthorn."

And somewhere past the gates, out in the dark beyond the last of the torchlight, the howls begin.

Chapter Ten: The Weight of PowerThe world comes back in pieces.Lyra blinks. The cave walls swim into focus. Water drips somewhere. Her body aches. Every muscle screams. Her head pounds like someone took a hammer to it.She's on the ground. Not chained anymore. The silver chains lie melted in a puddle near her feet. The metal still glows faintly. Still warm. What happened? She tries to sit up. Pain lances through her. She falls back down. Groans."Easy." A voice. Familiar. Kael's voice. "You've been out for a while. Don't move too fast."She turns her head. Kael sits beside her. His face is bruised. His lip is split. There's a cut above his eye that's still oozing blood. But he's alive. He's here."Seraphine." The name comes out like a curse. "Where is she?""Gone." His jaw tightens. "She ran. When you broke free, when the power exploded out of you, she ran. She's probably halfway to the Keep by now."Lyra tries to process this. Tries to remember. The chains. The knife. Seraphine sta

She doesn't care.More come. They keep coming. Through the broken door. Through the cracks in the walls. Everywhere she looks, there's another face. Another set of teeth. Catches him across the chest. He falls. Another takes his place. Then another. They never stop. They never run out."The door!" Soren shouts somewhere behind her. "We need to get out. Now!"Lyra looks up. The temple door is shut. Sealed tight. No handle. No crack. Just so

  • BLOOD OF THE FORGOTTEN    THE HOLLOW MOON

The sun comes up grey and cold over Blackthorn Keep.Lyra stands at the eastern gate. Her breath smokes in the air. Her body hurts. Her head hurts worse. She didn't sleep. Couldn't. Every time she shut her eyes, she saw that cell. That note. That eye staring at her from the paper.Behind her, the group gets ready. Kael straps on his sword. Soren holds a map close to a torch. Ronan stands off to the side, watching the trees like he's expecting something to jump out. Mira packs bandages into a leather bag. A few warriors stand around, quiet, adjusting their gear.Nobody looks happy. Nobody looks like they want to be here. But they came anyway. That means something. She doesn't know what. But it means something."You ready?" Kael walks up beside her. His voice is low. Tired. But steady."No." She shakes her head. "But I'm going."He almost smiles. "Same thing.""No it's not. Ready means you know what's coming. Ready means you've thought about everything." She turns to look at him. "I'm w

  • BLOOD OF THE FORGOTTEN    THE EMPTY CELL

The first arrow hits the courtyard wall two feet from Lyra's head. Stone splinters fly everywhere. Something sharp slices her cheek. She feels the sting but doesn't have time to react."Down!" Kael grabs her shoulder and shoves her behind an overturned cart. She hits the ground hard. A second arrow whistles past. It plants itself in the wooden wheel, right where she was standing.Chaos everywhere. Warriors running. People screaming. Torches fall and flicker on the stone. Smoke starts to fill the air. The war horn blasts somewhere beyond the walls, low and endless. It vibrates in her chest. Makes her wolf restless and angry."Who's attacking us?" Her voice shakes. Her heart pounds so hard it hurts."I don't know." Kael's eyes scan the darkness. His body stays coiled tight, ready to spring. "Doesn't sound like Darius's people. His rogues don't use arrows. They fight close. Wolf form. Always have.""Then who—"A warrior stumbles past them. Blood soaks his shoulder. His face twists in pai

The Great Hall empties out fast once Kael starts shouting orders, and the silence that's left behind feels almost worse than the noise did.No laughter drifting from near the hearth anymore. No warriors trading stories over half-finished plates.Just the sound of boots pounding down stone corridors, doors banging shut one after another somewhere deep in the Keep, and Kael's voice cutting through all of it, low and sharp enough to send warriors scattering in every direction at once."Search every corridor. Every room, every cellar, every crawlspace big enough to hide a man." His eyes are hard as flint, his whole body coiled tight, like something wound too far and about to snap loose. "If he's still inside these walls, I want him found before he finds a way past them."Lyra stands frozen near the doorway, watching the man she argued with in his study just that morning disappear completely. In his place stands somebody colder. Somebody a whole lot more dangerous."Kael." Her voice comes
